transpiler cache: treat an ES-module entry without a module record as a miss under test isolation - #44935
A run without isolation writes a transpiler cache entry with no module record. Each later bun test --isolate run parses that module once per test file. bench/test/app: 6,136 parses, not 2,632.
A type-only re-export then fails: SyntaxError: export 'T' not found in './types'.
Cause: an isolated reader takes the entry as a hit (src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerStore.rs:973, src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:2840).
Fix
For a reader that needs the record (EsmRecordUse::Required), an ES-module entry without one is a miss. put replaces it only with equal output. Other readers skip the record.
Correct because an entry keeps its output. The format and cache version do not change.
Verified: test/cli/test/isolation.test.ts (4 new cases fail on main). Also transpiler-cache.test.ts, macro-test.test.ts, rust:check-all, rust:clippy.
Self-reviewed: 24 concerns raised, 23 addressed. Rejected: a worker-thread macro test (needs a race).
Background
The cache key is a hash of the file's source. Under --isolate, the record lets later test files link a module without a parse.
The isolated run that replaces an entry transpiles the module again. One test file, 640 KB module: 110 ms CPU, not main's 57 ms.
It repeats each run if the entry cannot be replaced (unwritable directory, different output).
Without isolation: up to 14 more instructions per module load (a cache hit: 41 fewer), +512 bytes of text.
Notes
The contract.docs/test/parallel.mdx:83 says "The second file to import a module skips reading, transpiling and parsing it". Line 179 says "nothing is re-parsed". The cache is global for a user and content-addressed (docs/runtime/environment-variables.mdx:225). So any run of the same bytes without isolation can write the entry. Examples: another project, an earlier CI step, a Worker inside an isolated run.
Results that the entry decided on main. The module record carries two facts that a plain Module provider does not have. It marks TypeScript files, so a type-only re-export links. It takes the top-level await flag from the source, not from the output. With an entry without a record, both came out different from a run with the cache off. With this change they do not depend on who wrote the entry. One exception: a module whose first load in the test process is the import of a macro (see "Macro mode"). The type-only re-export still fails without --isolate. That is #7384 (see #35605).
Measurements. Release builds of main 71d0d43 and of this branch at 9f8b067, linux x64. After that the branch merged main and dropped the sourcemap compare in put. That removes one hash from the run that rewrites an entry. The numbers were not taken again. perf, valgrind, strace and bloaty are not installed in the build container, and the PMU is not exposed. The counts come from BUN_JSC_reportParseTimes, /proc/self/io, a ptrace syscall counter, a ptrace single-step counter, size and nm. "640 KB fixture" is 50 test files that import one 640 KB lib.ts. It is the worst case for main: one large module with many importing files.
bench/test/app (48 test files, zod, date-fns, lodash, 73 ES-module entries), after a bun test without isolation. Parsed # lines per bun test --isolate run: main 6,136 / 6,136 / 6,136, branch 2,632 / 2,632 / 2,632. CPU, 7 interleaved reps, median [min..max] ms: main 6,471 [5,928..6,745] on every run. Branch: 6,324 [6,112..6,575] for the run that rewrites the entries, then 6,251 [6,002..6,759]. Main over entries with records: 6,006 [5,873..6,138]. Cache off: 6,164 (main), 6,364 (branch). These ranges overlap. On this suite the measured gain is the parse count. The CPU difference is inside the noise.
640 KB fixture, over an entry that bun run wrote. Parsed # lines: main 252 / 252 / 252, branch 202 / 202 / 202. The first branch run rewrites the entry. Cache off: 202. --parallel=2: main 254, branch 204.
A run without isolation, rchar / syscr from /proc/self/io. Miss: 662,833 / 30 (main 662,833 / 30). Hit on an entry without a record: 1,361,782 / 33 (main 1,361,782 / 33). Hit on an entry with a record: 1,361,782 / 33 (main 1,419,870 / 34). Cache syscalls per hit on an entry with a record: 6 (main 7).
Instructions for a run without isolation, single-stepped, main thread: one whole call of the module loader (transpile_source_code_inner, callees included, 3 runs each). A require() or sync import that hits: 33,078 (main 33,123) for an ES module, 37,355 (main 37,400) for CommonJS. An entry file that hits: 40,458 (main 40,499) and 37,814 (main 37,855). A miss: 2,392,447 (main 2,392,437) and 3,248,553 (main 3,248,539). A JSON file: 7,732 (main 7,722). A file under 4 KiB: 65,190 (main 65,188). Allocator calls per hit: the same on both builds.
A hit is cheaper than on main for this reason: the lookup boxes the entry, and the bridge hands that box to the parser's cache. On main the entry moves by value to the bridge, which boxes it.
The lookup alone (RuntimeTranspilerCache::get, callees included, 640 KB module). Hit on an entry without a record: 577,817 (main 577,809). Hit on an entry with a record: 577,817 (main 609,634).
On the worker thread, the whole job (TranspilerJob::run_from_worker_thread) varies by about 500 instructions between runs of one build. The builds differ by less. One exception: a hit on an entry with a record, 55,383 (main 57,488) for an 8.6 KB module.
The isolated run that rewrites the entry: 1 entry refused, with 4 cache syscalls and 102 bytes read. 0 unlinks, 1 entry write. Entry 698,951 to 757,039 bytes, record 0 to 58,088 bytes. Second run: 0 refused, 0 writes.
CPU of bun test --isolate, 640 KB fixture, 7 interleaved reps, median [min..max] ms. 50 importing files, entry with a record: main 237 [232..241], branch 245 [234..258]. Entry without a record: main 679 [662..705] on every run, branch 307 [296..329] one time. Cache off: main 298, branch 301. One importing file, entry without a record: main 57 [42..61], branch 110 [108..114]. Entry with a record: 47 on both. Cache off: 109 on both. 45 more interleaved reps over the entry with a record: main 232, branch 236 (medians, with ranges of 156..258 and 175..257).
Entry rewrites over [bun run, test --isolate, bun run, bun test, test --isolate, test --parallel=2] on one cache directory: 1 (the second run). Files in the cache directory: 1.
Entries rewritten per isolated run, after a bun test without isolation filled the cache. prettier + hono (20 test files, 9 ES-module entries): 9, then 0, then 0. bench/test/app: 73, then 0, then 0. A later run without isolation: 0. A read-only cache directory (debug build, scoped log): 9 refused in each run.
--parallel=4 / --parallel=12, first run over an entry without a record (debug build): 4 / 12 transpiles and 4 / 12 writes of the shared module, one per worker. Next run: 0.
Release binary: +512 bytes of text (size: 89,104,397 to 89,104,909). The stripped file is 4,096 bytes larger. size_of::<bun_ast::RuntimeTranspilerCache>(): 104 (main 88). The struct is on the stack of one transpile.
A script compares the user CPU of bun test --isolate over an entry from a plain run and over an entry from an isolated run. Main: 2.82 times. This branch: 1.00 to 1.02 times in 3 runs.
Where an isolated run transpiles a module again on every run. The entry stays as it is. A run without isolation reads what it read before.
The cache directory cannot be written, or it is restored from a snapshot that a run without isolation made.
The transpile of the isolated run is not the output that the entry has. Three known cases follow.
An ES module calls require("path") on a builtin with no node: prefix. An import of that module prints require("node:path"), a require() of it prints require("path"). The output differs if the isolated run loads the module the other way than the writer.
On main each of these three is a hit, and the isolated run executes the output of the other mode. Here the isolated run executes its own transpile for as long as the entry has no record. An isolated run of the other package can store the record. Then the entry is a hit for every reader again, as on main.
put compares with the entry that get refused. If another process replaces the entry between the two, put does not see it. Two writers of one key have the same window on main.
Macro mode. A module that a macro imports is transpiled in macro mode under the key of its normal transpile (#38683). In an isolated run that load takes an entry as it is, as on main (EsmRecordUse::IfStored). It never replaces an entry. That load can be the first load of the module in the test process. Then the provider is a plain Module for the whole run: a type-only re-export in it fails and each test file parses it, as on main. #40059 moves macros to their own VM.
Designs weighed.
A second entry name for isolated runs. Users of both modes then transpile and store each module of 4 KiB or more twice.
Every writer stores the record. Each ES-module miss without isolation then builds and serializes a record that no reader of that run uses. Entries that are already on disk still need this read rule or a version bump.
A bit in the features hash. Runs with and without isolation then delete the entry of the other on every switch.
This rule reads two header fields that the lookup has already read. needs_extended_manifest in src/install/PackageManifestMap.rs does the same for a cached manifest.
Not changed here.
Some ES-module providers do not come from a cache entry: a // @bun file, a builtin module with JS source. Under isolation each test file still parses them. That is a change in the module loader.
src/jsc/AsyncModule.rs prints without a module record. Nothing reaches it today: nothing fills pending_imports.
Which of the two is to land first is a question for a maintainer.
Tests. The 4 new cases are in test/cli/test/isolation.test.ts. They fail on a release build of main 71d0d43. They pass on a release build of the branch at 9f8b067 and on a debug build of the branch after the merge of main. On that debug build, each of these deletions fails at least one case:
the reader test in the rule
the CommonJS exemption
the record-length test
the line that keeps the refused file
the output compare in put
the record skip in Entry::load
the macro-mode exclusion on the JS thread
IfStored replaced by Unused
The macro check on the worker thread has no test. Only a race between a macro and a worker job reaches it.
Release build of the branch at 9f8b067: isolation.test.ts 50 pass, transpiler-cache.test.ts 20 pass, macro-test.test.ts 28 pass, test/regression/issue/30887.test.ts 5 pass, 28159.test.ts 1 pass, debugger-buntranspiledmodule.test.ts 2 pass. bun run rust:check-all: 12 ok, 0 failed. bun run rust:clippy and cargo check --workspace --all-targets: no errors. After the merge of main: bun run rust:clippy and cargo fmt --all -- --check pass.
On a debug build of 9f8b067, older cases of isolation.test.ts ran into the 5 s test timeout of their child process. That happened in 3 of 3 runs of main's copy of the file. With a larger timeout for the child it happened in 0 of 2 runs. Two cases of transpiler-cache.test.ts timed out in the same way. That is not part of this change.

…s under test isolation
`bun test --isolate` and `--parallel` build each module record from the ESM
record that the transpiler cache entry stores. A run without isolation stores
no record. An isolated run took such an entry as a hit and cached a plain
Module source provider. JavaScriptCore then parsed the module again in every
test file, and a type-only re-export did not link.
The cache lookup now knows if its reader needs the record. For that reader an
ES-module entry without a record is a miss. The reader transpiles one time and
the existing put replaces the entry with one that has the record. The lookup
does not delete the rejected file: it is valid for every other reader.
A reader that does not use the record does not read, allocate or hash it.
…ve macro-mode loads as they are
The cache key does not cover every input of a transpile: the module type hint,
macro mode and the test-only import aliases are not in it. The isolated reader
that refused an entry for its missing module record then stored its own
transpile under the same name, and a later run without isolation executed it.
`get()` now keeps the output hash of the entry that it refused, and `put()`
replaces that entry only if the new output is the same. A load in macro mode
takes an entry as it is, as before.
The record decode of a cache hit is one method on the entry, and the lookup
result is a type of its own, not an error.
…est the macro load over an entry with a record
`put()` replaces the refused entry only if the output and the sourcemap are
the same, so an isolated run that makes no sourcemap leaves the entry as it
is. A `put()` that keeps the entry says so in the cache log.
The reader's use of the record is `esm_record_use` on both cache structs, and
`Entry::esm_record` is private to the crate: `Entry::module_info()` is its one
reader.
Tests: the macro case compares the output of the entry, and it runs the macro
load again over an entry that has a record. The kept-entry case runs two test
files under `--parallel`, so workers start. The children get a 30 s test
timeout.
How I reproduced it (release build of main 71d0d43, linux x64):
bun run ./run.ts with a fresh BUN_RUNTIME_TRANSPILER_CACHE_PATH. run.ts imports a 640 KB lib.ts. The entry that this run writes has no module record.
BUN_JSC_reportParseTimes=1 bun test --isolate with the same cache directory, over 50 test files that import lib.ts.
Main prints 252 Parsed # lines on every run. With the cache off it prints 202. This branch prints 202 from the first run.
With the same kind of entry, a type-only re-export fails on main under --isolate: SyntaxError: export 'T' not found in './types'. It passes on this branch.
The 4 new cases in test/cli/test/isolation.test.ts fail on main and pass on this branch.
CI on 49639b1. Green. Buildkite build 134298 passed, and all GitHub checks pass: cargo clippy, cargo miri test, mordant, Format and the lint jobs. The 6 failed test-aot-drawn jobs in that build are soft failures, and the same AOT tests fail on other open PRs.
The transpiler cache now uses a caller-selected policy to read ESM records and returns module information from loaded records. It preserves cache entries when a required record is missing or regenerated output differs. Runtime callers set the policy, and isolation tests cover record creation, preservation, and repair.
Changes
Transpiler cache ESM records
Layer / File(s)
Summary
ESM-record policy and cache lookup src/ast/transpiler_cache.rs, src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerCache.rs
A new policy controls whether cache lookups skip, optionally read, or require ESM records. Lookups that lack a required record return a miss and retain the entry’s output hash. put keeps a refused entry when the new output hash differs.
Runtime caller policy and module information src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerStore.rs, src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs
The transpiler store and runtime hooks set record use from isolation and macro state. Cache hits obtain module information through Entry::module_info().
Tests cover record creation, damaged-record handling, preservation when transpilation differs, and macro imports. They also cover synchronous and asynchronous loading and serial and parallel isolated runs.
The remaining issues affect test configuration and cache efficiency in a narrow case. The PR is mergeable with owner awareness, though both should be corrected.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the Entry::module_info() extraction in both the sync (src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs) and async (src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerStore.rs) hit paths for behavior drift — for EsmRecordUse::Unused the record is never read so it returns None as before, and for the macro-mode IfStored reader it matches the base's isolated-read; the unlink_guard is also disarmed on the new MissingEsmRecord return so a refused entry is kept rather than unlinked.
Extended reasoning...
The change adds an EsmRecordUse mode and refused_entry_hashes to the runtime transpiler cache facade, turns a recordless ES-module entry into a miss for isolated readers, and gates the subsequent put() on byte-identical output and sourcemap hashes. It touches no security-sensitive surface. Three inline findings about repeated re-transpiles (sourcemaps-disabled runs, --parallel workers, macro-first loads) already signal that a human should weigh the design trade-off, so this note only records the refactor and guard paths that were examined and found behavior-preserving.
`Found::Hit` held an `Entry` by value next to a 16-byte variant, which
`clippy::large_enum_variant` rejects. The lookup now boxes the entry of a hit,
and the bridge hands that box to the parser's cache. The bridge made the same
box before, so a hit still allocates one time.
…-miss
src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs: this branch reads `macro_mode` where the cache
is made, and main added `!DATA_ONLY` to `has_any_macro_remappings`. The
later statement keeps only `has_any_macro_remappings`, with `!DATA_ONLY`.
`put()` now stores nothing when the sourcemap is empty, and `Entry::load`
rejects an entry that has none. So an isolated run can no longer put an entry
without a sourcemap in the place of one that has it, and the sourcemap compare
has no case left. `put()` keeps the refused entry unless the new output is the
same.
The test step that ran an isolated run without sourcemaps is gone with it.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline finding, I also checked whether a module that mixes export syntax with exports.x = / module.exports.x = assignments would be refused and re-transpiled on every isolated run (it is written as ModuleType::Esm with no record, since has_commonjs_export_names suppresses the record at src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:3099-3114 and the matching site in RuntimeTranspilerStore.rs). It is not a working configuration to begin with: exports/module are unbound in ESM scope, so such a module fails at evaluation regardless of the cache path.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches the on-disk runtime transpiler cache lookup/put path (src/jsc/RuntimeTranspilerCache.rs), both transpile entry points (RuntimeTranspilerStore.rs async, jsc_hooks.rs sync) and the shared bun_ast cache struct; no security-sensitive surface. put() now gates replacement on the output hash alone, so the earlier sourcemap-mode concern no longer applies to the current code. The one surviving finding is pre-existing and is posted inline, so this note only records the additional candidate examined and ruled out.

Notes
The contract.
docs/test/parallel.mdx:83says "The second file to import a module skips reading, transpiling and parsing it". Line 179 says "nothing is re-parsed". The cache is global for a user and content-addressed (docs/runtime/environment-variables.mdx:225). So any run of the same bytes without isolation can write the entry. Examples: another project, an earlier CI step, aWorkerinside an isolated run. Results that the entry decided on main. The module record carries two facts that a plain
Moduleprovider does not have. The type-only re-export still fails without--isolate. That is #7384 (see #35605).Measurements. Release builds of main 71d0d43 and of this branch at 9f8b067, linux x64. After that the branch merged main and dropped the sourcemap compare in

If another process replaces the entry between the two, putdoes not see it. Two writers of one key have the same window on main.Macro mode. A module that a macro imports is transpiled in macro mode under the key of its normal transpile (#38683). In an isolated run that load takes an entry as it is, as on main (
EsmRecordUse::IfStored). It never replaces an entry. That load can be the first load of the module in the test process. Then the provider is a plainModulefor the whole run: a type-only re-export in it fails and each test file parses it, as on main. #40059 moves macros to their own VM.Designs weighed.
