console.group: indent count, time, assert, table and each line of a message - #47019
Inside console.group(), console.timeEnd(), console.timeLog(), console.count(), console.table() and a bare console.assert(false) print at column 0. So do trace frames and lines after a line feed. Node indents them.
Cause: only format2 writes the group indent, once per message (src/jsc/ConsoleObject.rs:1333). Other producers skip it.
Fix
In a group, each console method prints through GroupIndentWriter, which writes the indent before each line. console.timeLog and console.timeEnd now print through the console's stderr writer, not Output.
Correct: Node does the same in kWriteToConsole, and passes the new fixture check.
Verified: test/js/web/console/console-log.test.ts (9 of 16 fail on main). Also the console, Bun.inspect and REPL suites.
Self-reviewed: 7 concerns raised, 6 addressed. Not taken: a per-stream line-start flag for nested console calls (Notes).
Background
ConsoleObject, the native printer behind the global console, keeps a buffered writer per stream and the group depth.
console.count, console.timeLog, console.timeEnd, console.assert(false): the line gains the indent.
console.table: each line of the table gains the indent.
console.trace: each frame gains the indent.
Text with a line feed (a string, %s, an Error, an inspect.custom result, a group label, the extra arguments of console.timeLog, the result of bun -p): each line after the first gains the indent. An empty line becomes the indent alone, as in Node.
console.log() with no arguments prints the indent and a line feed, as in Node.
The value printer starts at column 0 and the writer adds the indent. So an array or object in a group breaks its lines as it does outside a group. Before, the group depth took 2 columns per level from the 80 column budget.
Output that changes outside a group
console.timeLog writes its line with 1 write(2), not 2. The elapsed time and the arguments are now in one buffer.
console.timeLog("t", "a", v) where the type lookup of v throws (a $$typeof getter): main prints [0.01ms] t with no line feed and drops a. This PR prints [0.01ms] t a and the line feed.
A console.timeEnd or console.timeLog called from inspect.custom while a console.error message is formatted now lands in the middle of that line, as a nested console.error does. On main it printed first, because it went through the buffer of Output.
Nothing else. test/js/web/console/console-log.js, console-timeLog.js and a script of 49 calls to every console method print the same bytes on main and on this PR, on both streams, with NO_COLOR=1 and with FORCE_COLOR=1.
A console call made while another message is formatted (from inspect.custom) lands in the middle of the outer line. In a group, the rest of the outer line then starts at column 0. Each message has its own writer. Node prints the inner message first. This needs whole-message output, the direction of console: output goes behind what process.stdout/stderr have buffered, as in Node #37128, so the self-review's line-start flag per stream is not in this PR.
A message whose formatting throws leaves its line with no line feed, as on main. Node prints nothing for such a message.
console.count, console.timeLog, console.timeEnd and a bare console.assert(false) do not run the before-print hook of bun test. With --dots their line joins the line of dots.
new console.Console() and node:worker_threads workers use the JS Console class, which was already correct.
Measurements (Linux x64, release builds of main 3396aea and of this PR on that commit)
Instructions per call, user space, JIT off, output to /dev/null. Counted with perf_event_open over 200,000 calls minus 100,000 calls, lowest of 3 runs. The runs differ by less than 1, and by about 15 for console.timeLog.

console.count pays for two calls through &mut dyn Write and the depth test. console.assert(false) and console.log() pay for the depth test and the calls through &mut dyn Write.
write(2) calls per console call (syscw of /proc/self/io, 1,000 calls each): the same on main and this PR for 13 of 15 shapes outside a group. console.timeLog goes from 2 to 1. Inside two groups: console.timeLog 2 to 1, a 100 KB string of 1,000 lines 3 to 26, the others the same. A formatted object of 1,000 keys (about 90 KB printed) takes 23 on main and on this PR, inside or outside a group: the value printer streams into the same 4096-byte buffer.
Allocator calls per 1,000 console calls (ASAN exit statistics, debug builds): the same on main and this PR. 0 for log, count, timeLog, timeEnd and assert, outside a group and inside two. 4 per console.table call on both.
Size: .text 82,168,969 to 82,170,505 bytes. The stripped binary is 107,734,752 bytes on both.
Wall clock, JIT on, 10 interleaved runs on one CPU, minimum ns per call (main, this PR, main again): console.log('hello') 204.1, 202.5, 205.7. console.log({ hello: 'object' }) 680.4, 648.5, 671.2.
The { hello: 'object' } case follows code layout, not work. An earlier build of this PR, with the same code on that path, was 3% slower than main there (650.2 to 670.6 ns), and Bun.inspect of the same object moved with it. The instruction counts are lower on this PR in each build.
Tests run
test/js/web/console/console-log.test.ts: 16 pass on a debug build of this PR, also with BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1. 9 of 16 fail on a release build of main.
Without the break in console.timeLog, the two throwing-argument tests fail.
Also pass: console-timeLog, console-table, bun-inspect-table, console-iterator, console-write, dots.test.ts, regression 20100, util/inspect, inspect-error, repl, the Node test-console-*.js files, test/internal/source-lints, the bun-types test, cargo clippy -p bun_jsc, cargo fmt, bun fmt --check.
Overlap with open pull requests
console.group: do not start the group when its label throws #47095 removes _indent_guard from message_with_type_and_level_ and increases the depth after the label prints. This PR edits the same function and the same test file, and keeps the guard. A merge of the two heads has 2 conflicts in src/jsc/ConsoleObject.rs and 2 in console-log.test.ts. In ConsoleObject.rs, console.group: do not start the group when its label throws #47095 changes only a comment in each conflict. In the test file, both add tests at the same place. The one that lands second needs a rebase. A merge that keeps both sides (f0f09e6 and 19d558e, debug build) passes the 17 tests of the file.
A design review picked one private accessor as the only way to a console stream, and the first version of this diff had it.
The self-review of that version asked for this narrower shape. The accessor moved state that three open pull requests edit, and console.timeLog and console.timeEnd still had a second path around it. The fixture check is what holds every method to the rule.

…essage
Inside console.group(), console.timeEnd(), console.timeLog(),
console.count(), console.table() and a bare console.assert(false)
printed at column 0. So did console.trace() frames and every line after
a line feed in a message.
While a group is open, a console method now prints through
GroupIndentWriter. It writes the indent before each line of the
message, as kWriteToConsole does in Node. With no group open, the
method gets its stream writer with no wrapper.
console.timeLog() and console.timeEnd() print their whole line through
the stderr writer of the console. A bare console.warn() or
console.error() writes its line feed to stderr.
test/js/web/console/console-log.test.ts passes on every lane: Linux (glibc, musl, ASAN), Windows (x64, arm64) and macOS (x64, arm64). This branch needs a merge of main after the fixture fix lands. The merge has no conflict today.
Console output now applies active group indentation at the writer level. Counter and timer output use the same group-aware writer. Tests cover indentation across console methods and confirm that direct writes are not indented.

Console group indentation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Apply indentation through the output writer src/jsc/ConsoleObject.rs, packages/bun-types/globals.d.ts
A new writer wrapper adds indentation before each output line. FormatOptions no longer stores indentation, and the Console.group documentation describes which output is indented.
Route console messages and counters through the writer src/jsc/ConsoleObject.rs
Console messages, empty assertion failures, empty-log newlines, and counter output use group-aware writers. Table formatting no longer adds group depth to its formatter indent.
Route timer output through the writer src/jsc/ConsoleObject.rs
timeEnd and timeLog write output through the group-aware stderr writer. timeLog writes its final newline and flush after argument tag lookup fails.
Cover group indentation and output boundaries test/js/web/console/console-group-indent.fixture.js, test/js/web/console/console-log.test.ts
Tests cover console methods, multiline and empty output, nested groups, workers, assertions, formatter errors, open groups, and direct writes.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue [#30017] requires console.timeEnd() output inside an active console.group() to receive the group indent. The whole-PR diff (merge base 9fe1cd6 to head f0f09e6) shows Bun__ConsoleObject__timeEnd now writes through GroupIndentWriter::wrap(this.error_writer(), default_indent, ...). The write_elapsed text, the label, and the final line feed all pass through that writer. GroupIndentWriter::write_all inserts the indent at each line start, so the [elapsed] label line gains the indent. The same wrapper covers console.timeLog and console.count, which share the objective of group indentation. The issue's expected-output sample uses Node's label: time format. The issue text states the requirement as indentation, and the PR keeps Bun's existing [elapsed] label format on stderr and documents that choice. That format difference is not a coding requirement of the issue. The incremental diff since the previous reviewed heads could not be read (diff metadata exceeded the inspection buffer). This verdict uses the whole-PR diff at head. Test evidence cited in the PR description was not re-run or re-read in this pass.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR diff stays within console group-indentation behavior. Changes are: the new GroupIndentWriter wrapper; its use in message output, console.count, console.assert (empty case), console.timeEnd, and console.timeLog; removal of FormatOptions::default_indent and the manual write_indent calls in format2, which the wrapper replaces; the table printer indent adjustment, which the wrapper replaces; and visibility of write_indent_n for the wrapper. The timeEnd/timeLog stderr routing through error_writer is required for the group indent to apply. The timeLog change from return to break on a tag lookup failure is a small behavior change in the function being rewritten. The PR description discloses it and it is not a unrelated feature. The broader coverage (tables, traces, multi-line text, console.log() with no arguments) extends the same group-indent rule and is explicitly described in the PR as parity with Node. No unrelated change was found in the diff.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the new &mut ConsoleObject borrow in timeEnd (not held across anything that re-enters JS) and the timeLog rewrite, which keeps the raw-deref writer pattern across fmt.format as before; and the bare console.warn()/console.error() newline moving to stderr outside a group, which matches Node and is called out in the description.
Extended reasoning...
The change reworks console.group indentation in src/jsc/ConsoleObject.rs via a GroupIndentWriter adapter, reroutes timeEnd/timeLog through the console's stderr writer, and updates snapshots plus a new fixture; it touches no security-sensitive surface. The ruled-out items above were examined from the diff and do not add to the three inline findings.
Out of scope check (bare console.warn() and console.error()): taken. Their line feed stays on stdout, as on main, and only gains the group indent. console: output goes behind what process.stdout/stderr have buffered, as in Node #37128 has the stream change. A script of 49 calls to every console method now prints the same bytes as main on both streams when no group is open.
console.timeLog writer held across formatting: this PR does not change it. main holds the same writer across the same calls (src/jsc/ConsoleObject.rs:5857), and the output for a nested console.error is the same on main and here. Details are in the thread.
write(2) count for a large multi-line string in a group: kept. It is the rate of the 4096-byte stream buffer, which a formatted object of the same size already has on main (23 writes for about 90 KB). The table is in the thread.
Nested console.timeEnd / console.timeLog: kept, and now named under Downsides in the description.
Line with no line feed when an argument of console.log throws: same bytes as main. A line feed on that path prints an empty line when the first argument throws, so it is not in this PR.
One conflict, in src/jsc/ConsoleObject.rs. Both sides add an item after
`FlushOnDrop`: this branch adds `GroupIndentWriter`, and #45631 on main
adds `throw_for_removed_table_printer`. Keep both.
The diff of this PR against main did not change: the same 99 added and 54 removed lines in src/ and packages/.
The two changes meet in message_with_type_and_level_. console.table first makes main's check for a removed table printer, then prints through the indent writer of this branch.
Checked on the merged tree (Linux x64, debug build with ASAN):
console-log.test.ts: 16 pass. On a release build of an older main (367d939), 11 of the 16 fail.

This needs whole-message output, the direction of console: output goes behind what process.stdout/stderr have buffered, as in Node #37128, so the self-review's line-start flag per stream is not in this PR.console.count,console.timeLog,console.timeEndand a bareconsole.assert(false)do not run the before-print hook ofbun test. With--dotstheir line joins the line of dots.bun test --isolatekeeps the group depth from one file to the next (named in console.groupCollapsed: start a group, as console.group does #46505).process.emitWarninglines are not indented. Bun writes them toprocess.stderr. Node prints them withconsole.error.console.traceframes use the color setting of stderr on stdout (worker_threads: keep the native console in workers, routed through process.stdout/stderr #39592 has the fix).new console.Console()andnode:worker_threadsworkers use the JSConsoleclass, which was already correct.Measurements (Linux x64, release builds of main 3396aea and of this PR on that commit)

_indent_guardfrommessage_with_type_and_level_and increases the depth after the label prints. This PR edits the same function and the same test file, and keeps the guard. A merge of the two heads has 2 conflicts insrc/jsc/ConsoleObject.rsand 2 inconsole-log.test.ts. InConsoleObject.rs, console.group: do not start the group when its label throws #47095 changes only a comment in each conflict. In the test file, both add tests at the same place. The one that lands second needs a rebase. A merge that keeps both sides (f0f09e6 and 19d558e, debug build) passes the 17 tests of the file.console.logformatter, deletepretty_format.rs#46729 readsFormatOptions.default_indentinFormatter::with_options. This PR deletes that field. The one that lands second drops that line. A possible order: Print snapshots with theconsole.logformatter, deletepretty_format.rs#46729, this PR, console: output goes behind what process.stdout/stderr have buffered, as in Node #37128.Vecsink can go underGroupIndentWriter, which takes&mut dyn Write.write_elapsedwith the same role.$$typeofgetter. The test for a throwingconsole.timeLogargument uses that getter, the one value whose type lookup throws. That case then goes.count,timeorassert.console.table. This PR covers it.Design history
