Problem

  • Bun ends the process when it cannot allocate the string for UTF-8 bytes: panic(main thread): Segmentation fault at address 0xBBADBEEF. One ill-formed byte in a large Bun.readableStreamToText stream does it. Bun 1.3.14 rejected.
  • WTF::String::fromUTF8ReplacingInvalidSequences aborts when an allocation fails. Zig::convertUTF8ToString (src/jsc/bindings/helpers.h:86) calls it for ill-formed bytes. 21 more lines call it for any bytes.

Fix

  • Zig::convertUTF8ToStringLossy (BunString.cpp) makes the same string with allocations that can fail. All 22 lines call it. root-pch.h poisons the WTF name.
  • These now throw RangeError: Out of memory: stream text, Bun.JSONL, buffer.transcode, CString, SQLite text, Bun.CookieMap, a Bun.serve route parameter.
  • Verified: test/js/node/buffer-oom.test.ts (10 new tests, main fails 9). 100,003 seeded inputs decode the same. Also 64 related test files.
  • Self-reviewed: 107 concerns raised, 97 addressed. Notes list the other 10.

Background

Downsides

Notes

Repro. Release builds, Linux x64. Main is 11c3671, this branch is fd5392f. The commits after it change tests, three SQLite getters and the error path of a route parameter.

// ( ulimit -v 4000000; bun repro.mjs )
const bytes = new Uint8Array(1024 * 1024).fill(97);
const stream = new ReadableStream({
  start(c) {
    for (let i = 0; i < 500; i++) c.enqueue(bytes);
    c.enqueue(new Uint8Array([0xff]));
    c.close();
  },
});
console.log(await Bun.readableStreamToText(stream).then(text => text.length, e => e.name + ": " + e.message));
  • Bun 1.3.14: RangeError: Out of memory.
  • Bun 1.4.0, Bun 1.4.3 and main: panic(main thread): Segmentation fault at address 0xBBADBEEF, exit 139. That address is WTF's CRASH().
  • This branch: RangeError: Out of memory.
  • With a valid last chunk ([0xc3, 0xa9]), Bun 1.4.0 and 1.4.3 end the same way. Main and this branch print 524288001: since Compile TypeScript to machine code ahead of time: bun build --compile --aot #45631, valid UTF-8 needs no buffer of twice the input.

Reach. The change shows where the OS refuses an allocation, as ulimit -v does. Under a cgroup memory limit (docker run --memory, Kubernetes) the kernel kills the process: the repro in a cgroup with memory.max of 1,200 MiB exits 137 on main and on this branch.

What changes, by caller.

  • Zig::convertUTF8ToString keeps its first arm from Compile TypeScript to machine code ahead of time: bun build --compile --aot #45631: valid UTF-8 converts with simdutf, and a failed allocation gives null. Its second arm, for bytes that are not valid UTF-8, called the WTF function. It now calls Zig::convertUTF8ToStringLossy with Report. These callers throw RangeError: Out of memory for a null string:
    • new Response(stream).text() and Bun.readableStreamToText: one chunk (BunStreamConsumers.cpp), more chunks, a direct stream (JSDirectStreamController.cpp).
    • Bun.JSONL.parse and parseChunk of a typed array that is not valid UTF-8 (BunObject.cpp).
    • buffer.transcode from utf8 (NodeBufferModule.cpp).
    • Each string that bun_string_jsc::create_utf8_for_js makes (BunString__createUTF8ForJS): a bun:ffi CString, the reply to a Redis command, napi_create_string_utf8. The test row is CString.
    • The key of a bindgen record (Bindgen/ToJS.cpp), and the message of a Bun.sql error (SQLError.cpp). No test row reaches these two.
  • BunString__createUTF8ForJS had a 64 KiB gate from Hardening: fix crashes across the runtime, bundler, dev server, shell and CLI #46021, with the comment "convertUTF8ToString crashes if the allocation fails". Since Compile TypeScript to machine code ahead of time: bun build --compile --aot #45631 both sides of the gate reach the same two functions, so the gate is removed.
  • String::clone_utf8 of ill-formed bytes (BunString__fromUTF8) gets the OutOfMemory tag. A valid input already gets it (uninitializedStringFailure). .to_js() of that string throws ERR_MEMORY_ALLOCATION_FAILED: the test row is the name of a deserialized File.
  • Of the 21 direct calls, 20 pass FailureAction::Crash, because nothing there checks for null. They get null only for null bytes. The report changes from Segmentation fault at address 0xBBADBEEF with "Bun has crashed. This indicates a bug in Bun, not your code." to "Bun has run out of memory." with SIGABRT.
    • 9 are bounded by a constant: process.report (6), X509 signatureAlgorithm and signatureAlgorithmOid, a bun:sqlite cell under 64 bytes.
    • 2 are bounded by the HTTP header limit: the URL and the method of a node:http request.
    • 9 are sized by input: the name of an environment variable, a WebSocket topic, a property name from an addon, lint text (2), 3 strings of bun build --compile --aot, and sqliteText. That last one has 14 callers: the names of columns and parameters that become property keys, table and file names, the arguments of an authorizer, and SQLite error messages. The SQL sizes most of them. The test row is the name of a node:sqlite column in a row object.
    • 1 is a log line before a crash (BunAOTRuntime.cpp). It passes Report.
  • Seven SQLite texts now throw RangeError: Out of memory (sqliteTextToJS): a node:sqlite TEXT cell, sourceSQL, expandedSQL and the fields of columns(), and toString(), columnNames and declaredTypes of a bun:sqlite statement. An error path for the row builders (column names as property keys) touches the row-shape cache of both modules, so it is not in this PR.
  • decodeURIComponentSIMD returns a null string only for a failed allocation. It copied ASCII with String(span), built the rest in a StringBuilder that crashes on overflow, and appended a null string as nothing. So on main, valid bytes that are not ASCII whose string cannot be allocated gave "" with no "%", and lost that run after a "%". Now its host function and Bun.CookieMap throw. A Bun.serve route parameter throws from the route call, where it gave "": callRoute creates the request first, so the server handles it as an exception from the route handler, runs its error handler and answers the next request.
  • Bun.CookieMap copies a name, and a value with no "%", with Zig::tryCreateString.

Results that are wrong and not changed here. Some readers take a null string as the empty string. Since #45631 they do that for valid UTF-8 whose string cannot be allocated. With this change they do it for ill-formed bytes too, where the process ended.

  • Zig::toString, Zig::toStringCopy and Zig::appendToBuilder: process.env, prompt() and multipart formData() among others. Throw instead of returning "" when bytes cannot be copied into a JS string #46984 gives these an error path. Debug builds under the 8 MiB ASAN cap, 5 MiB of bytes: for an ill-formed process.env value, prompt() line and multipart field, main ends the process and this branch gives "". Valid bytes that are not ASCII give "" on both.
  • Zig::toIdentifier and Bun::toIdentifier pass a null string to Identifier::fromString. The process ends there for an ill-formed key, as it does for a valid key on main.
  • A Bun.sql cell (clone_utf8_or_null, SQLDataCell.rs). A mock Postgres server, ulimit -v 1048576, a cell of 48 MiB, 3 runs for each row: an ill-formed TEXT cell ends main at 0xBBADBEEF and resolves as "" here. An ill-formed JSON cell does the same and resolves as null. Valid bytes that are not ASCII resolve as "" and null on both. In some runs on both builds the client's read buffer cannot grow, and Rust aborts (memory allocation of 83879936 bytes failed).
  • A Redis subscriber drops a message whose string cannot be made, and leaves the exception pending (on_valkey_message). redis, node:zlib: report a failed conversion instead of dropping the error #46430 makes the handler report. node:zlib emit_error drops the same error for its own short messages.
  • v8::String::NewFromUtf8 returns an empty value for a null string, as it does for valid bytes.

The converter. Zig::convertUTF8ToStringLossy in BunString.cpp follows WTF::String::fromUTF8ReplacingInvalidSequences (WTFString.cpp:457): an 8-bit copy for ASCII, else WTF::Unicode::convertReplacingInvalidSequences into a buffer of one char16_t for each byte, then a 16-bit copy of the result. The buffer is on the stack for up to 1,024 bytes and comes from tryMalloc above that, at the size that WTF's Vector asks for. One char16_t for each byte is enough: a sequence gives at most one for each of its bytes, and an ill-formed byte gives one U+FFFD. For 2^30 bytes or more that are not ASCII, WTF's function ends the process. With Report the new one returns null there, as Zig::convertUTF8ToString did before it called WTF. With Crash it tries the allocation. The parameter has no default, so each caller says which one it wants.

Still ends the process. A frame that Bun owns is fixed in Bun. A body that is compiled into WTF or JSC goes to the fork. Each row below ran under ulimit -v 1048576 on main and on this branch.

  • The 20 Crash callers above, with the out-of-memory report.
  • The strict twin, WTF::String::fromUTF8: 120 call lines, all in Bun's frames, and some take input that a script sizes. Bun.JSONC.parse of a string that is not ASCII, at 15% to 20% of the free address space (JSONRowsToJS.cpp:206), and new DatabaseSync(bytes) (NodeSqlite.cpp:1838) end at 0xBBADBEEF on both. They need the same change in Bun as this converter.
  • URLParser::formURLDecode inside WTF still calls the WTF converter: new URLSearchParams(text) of text that is not ASCII, and urlencoded formData() of a stream, end at 0xBBADBEEF on both.
  • Copies of the input in Rust: new Blob([bytes]).text(), new Response(bytes).text() and .blob() of a stream of two chunks abort with memory allocation of 311427072 bytes failed on both. Bun 1.3.14 threw there. A .env value of 200 MiB with an ill-formed byte aborts the same way before it reaches the converter.
  • Rust callers of String::create_uninitialized_latin1 and _utf16 that do not check the result, napi_create_string_latin1 and napi_create_string_utf16 for example: a failed allocation gives them an empty buffer, and copy_from_slice panics.
  • String to UTF-8: StringView::tryGetUTF8, behind Bun::UTF8View::tryCreate, makes its buffer with an allocation that aborts. A cookie value that is not ASCII in a header with a "%", and a string bound to a SQLite statement, go through it. Of 5 kinds of cookie header, main ends the process for each. This branch throws for 4, and still ends at 0xBBADBEEF for that one.
  • Lists that grow with an append that crashes: the pairs of Bun.CookieMap (cookies.append, 0xBBADBEEF for a header of many a=b; pairs), and the values of Bun.JSONL inside JSC (0xBBADBEEF for many short lines).
  • Rust buffers that grow with no check: the line of prompt(), the .env loader, the read buffers of the Redis and Postgres clients.
  • A view of a SharedArrayBuffer: the converter reads the bytes while a worker can write them, as it does on main. Decode a private copy of a JS buffer in the UTF-8 decoders #41574 gives the decoders a private copy.
  • A must-succeed allocation in WTF that fails prints Segmentation fault at address 0xBBADBEEF and "This indicates a bug in Bun". A failure handler in bmalloc could print the out-of-memory report for each of those. That is a change in the fork.

Node. Node 26.3.0, Linux x64, ulimit -v 2097152.

  • buffer.transcode(bytes, "utf8", "latin1") ends the process: exit 134, Assertion failed: !(n > 0) || (ret != nullptr). 9 of 9 runs (ASCII, not ASCII, ill-formed).
  • new Response(stream).text() depends on which allocation fails. With an input of 30% of the free address space, the decoder cannot allocate:
    • Bytes that are not ASCII end the process: exit 134, the same assertion, 2 of 2.
    • Ill-formed bytes end it: FATAL ERROR: CALL_AND_RETRY_LAST Allocation failed - JavaScript heap out of memory, 2 of 2.
    • ASCII rejects with ERR_MEMORY_ALLOCATION_FAILED, 2 of 2.
    • With an input of 60%, an earlier allocation fails and each kind rejects with that error, 3 of 3.
  • Bun rejects stream text and throws from buffer.transcode with the RangeError: Out of memory that these callers already had for a null string. This PR does not change which error a caller throws.

Tests and where they run.
test/js/node/buffer-oom.test.ts has 10 new tests. Main fails 9. The other one pins output that must not change.

  • ASAN builds, 5 tests under ASAN_OPTIONS=allocator_may_return_null=1:max_allocation_size_mb=8 with Malloc=1:
    • 24 rows throw: stream text (5), Bun.JSONL (2), CString, buffer.transcode, the name of a deserialized File, decodeURIComponentSIMD (6), a cookie whose escape needs a 16-bit buffer, SQLite text (7).
    • The rows for callers of Zig::convertUTF8ToString use an ill-formed byte, because valid bytes already throw on main.
    • The fifth test is a caller with Crash, the name of a node:sqlite column in a row object: "Bun has run out of memory" and SIGABRT. Main ends with SIGILL and no report.
    • The five run one at a time. On a debug build, five children at once take twice as long each and as long in total.
  • Debug builds, 2 tests under BUN_JSC_maxSingleAllocationSize, a cap on WTF's allocations only. No CI lane is a debug build, so they run with bun bd test only, like the test beside them.
    • An ASCII node:sqlite TEXT cell: the 8-bit copy of the converter.
    • A Bun.serve route parameter of 6 MiB of ASCII, and one of 3 MiB with an ill-formed byte: the reply is 500 from the error handler, and the next request gets 200. The ASAN cap cannot test this: it also fails the buffer that holds the request line.
  • Linux release lanes with glibc, 2 tests under ulimit -v 1048576 with the JIT off. They have 9 rows:
    • 6 rows with an input that takes 60% of the free address space.
    • A node:sqlite TEXT cell of 25%.
    • 2 copies that are as long as their source: a cookie name, and a cookie value with no "%".
    • 100 runs of each row, 4 in parallel: main exits 139 at 0xBBADBEEF in 900 of 900, and this branch throws in 900 of 900.
    • They ran on x64 only. With the JIT off, the 512 MiB pool that arm64 reserves is not in the limit. musl is skipped: nothing here measured it.
  • Every lane, 1 test of the converter's output for 1,023 to 1,026 bytes, around the end of its stack buffer. It passes on main too.
  • bun bd test test/js/node/buffer-oom.test.ts: 11 pass, 2 skip, in each of 3 runs with the default timeout. A debug build of main (8d5672c, the commit before the pin to the same WebKit source): 4 pass, 7 fail, 2 skip. A release build: 3 pass here, 1 pass and 2 fail on main.
  • With the environment of the ASAN lane (BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1, LeakSanitizer with test/leaksan.supp, BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1) on the debug build: 11 pass.
  • BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1 reports no unchecked exception in buffer-oom.test.ts, decodeURIComponentSIMD.test.ts, cookie-map.test.ts, bun-serve-routes.test.ts, node-sqlite.test.ts, sqlite.test.js, filesystem_router.test.ts, jsonl-parse.test.ts, and Node's test-sqlite-statement-sync.js and test-sqlite-data-types.js. That mode is slow on a debug build: 6 tests in 4 of these files hit the 5 s default timeout.
  • Also run on the debug build, 64 files: jsonl-parse, the 6 cookie files, bun-serve-cookies, bun-serve-routes, decodeURIComponentSIMD, streams, streams-string-limit, text-decoder, text-decoder-stream, body, body-stream, body-mixin-errors, utf8-conversion-limit, error-message-string-length-limit, buffer.test.js, test-icu-transcode.js, resp-nesting-depth, ffi-error-messages, sqlite.test.js, column-types, node-sqlite, the 18 test-sqlite-* files of Node, x509, websocket-server, filesystem_router, process, env, worker, node-module-module, isolation, spawn.ipc, sliceAnsi, stripANSI, wrapAnsi, argon2, scrypt, headers, FormData, URLSearchParams, urlpattern, hot, and js-plugins of bun lint.
  • The machine lost up to 67% of its CPU time to other tenants during these runs. With the 5 s default timeout, 24 tests in 11 of the 64 files timed out. Each of the 11 files ran again with a 30 s timeout:
    • 8 pass in full: jsonl-parse, streams, body, sqlite.test.js, node-sqlite, env, node-module-module, js-plugins.
    • 3 fail tests that a debug build of main fails too: process.test.js (1, the Node version of the host), worker.test.ts (2, "worker with event listeners doesn't close event loop"), filesystem_router.test.ts (1, "reload() while Bun.build() resolves the same directory").
  • After the third commit (523046a), on its debug build: bun-serve-routes, column-types, node-sqlite, sqlite.test.js, and Node's test-sqlite-statement-sync.js and test-sqlite-statement-sync-columns.js pass, also with BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1. serve.test.ts fails the 2 tests that a debug build of main fails (a port under 1024 as root, and an aborted sendfile). The fourth commit (75e3be7) changes the loop of columns() only: buffer-oom, node-sqlite and Node's two test-sqlite-statement-sync* files ran again on it.
  • Not run: Windows, macOS, aarch64, musl, the release-asan build that CI uses for its ASAN lane, the test/v8 and test/napi suites, and test/cli/lint/lint.test.ts (too slow for the default timeout on a debug build).

Output. A fixed-seed generator makes 100,003 byte strings of 1 to 4,096 bytes (any byte, mostly ASCII, and pieces of sequences). Bun.readableStreamToText decodes each one. The SHA-256 of the 191,842,736 UTF-16 units is the same on both builds (b8b3c5d6...42c0), and no string differs from TextDecoder.

Cost. Release builds, Linux x64, main (11c3671) against this branch (fd5392f).

Instructions in user space for each call, from perf_event_open: (count(4N) - count(N)) / 3N, one process for each count, one pinned core, concurrent JIT and GC off, the median of 5 rounds. A copy of main's binary runs beside main as the noise floor.

  • End to end, 141 rows: 59 are lower than main, 67 are inside the noise floor, and 15 are higher.
  • 9 of the 15 are a cost of this change: new Bun.CookieMap(header) costs 11 to 16 more instructions (0.3% to 1.3%), for two checked copies and one null check.
  • The other 6 are higher by 0.05% or less: 4 rows of 1 KiB by 2.0 instructions or less, and two Bun.JSONL.parse rows of 64 KiB by 13 and 62.
  • Lower, for example: an ill-formed process.env value or Bun.JSONL line of up to 2 KiB, 27 to 31. A node:sqlite TEXT cell, 12 to 26. decodeURIComponentSIMD of up to 1 KiB, 11 to 63. sourceSQL, toString() of a statement and an X509 field, 10 to 15. new CString of 128 KiB of ill-formed bytes, 0.8%: it validated twice.
  • The converter alone, by a gdb single-step from its entry to its return, for 6 kinds of input at 7 sizes from 4 to 2,048 bytes. It is lower than WTF's in 42 of 42 rows: by 14 to 16 instructions for ASCII, and by 26 to 29 for other bytes. The allocator calls and their sizes are the same in 42 of 42.
  • Size: .text is 256 bytes smaller (108,646,665 to 108,646,409). bun has the same size (138,193,048 bytes), and so has the stripped file. The new function is 1,329 bytes. BunString__createUTF8ForJS goes from 1,119 to 640 bytes.
  • For each process: no new host function, no new work at startup.
  • The commits after fd5392f change three SQLite getters (columnNames, declaredTypes, columns()) and the error path of a route parameter. No row above runs them. A routed request gets one more null check in callRoute.
  • Not measured: a Bun.serve route parameter end to end (decodeURIComponentSIMD is in the rows above), Windows, macOS, aarch64.
  • The design named one more measurement, Bun.JSONL.parse of ASCII bytes. It does not apply: Compile TypeScript to machine code ahead of time: bun build --compile --aot #45631 changed that path and this PR does not.

Self-review. Four rounds raised 107 concerns, and 97 are addressed. The fourth round read the diff after the rebase onto #45631. Not done:

Other PRs.

… fail

`WTF::String::fromUTF8ReplacingInvalidSequences` ends the process when
one of its allocations fails. `Zig::convertUTF8ToString` calls it for
bytes that are not valid UTF-8, and 21 more lines call it for any bytes.

`Zig::convertUTF8ToStringLossy` in BunString.cpp makes the same string
with allocations that can fail: an 8-bit copy for ASCII, else a buffer
of one `char16_t` for each byte (on the stack for up to 1,024 bytes) and
a 16-bit copy of the result. With `FailureAction::Report`, a failed
allocation gives null. The callers of `Zig::convertUTF8ToString` already
handle null: most throw, and the readers with no error path give "".

A caller with no null check passes `FailureAction::Crash`. It gets null
only for null bytes, and the process ends through `Bun__outOfMemory()`
when the string cannot be made. 20 of the 21 direct callers do that. The
other one is a log line. root-pch.h poisons the name of the WTF function.

Four SQLite texts throw `RangeError: Out of memory`: a node:sqlite TEXT
cell, `sourceSQL`, `expandedSQL`, and `toString()` of a bun:sqlite
statement. Other SQLite text (column names, declared types, parameter
names, error messages) keeps ending the process.

`decodeURIComponentSIMD` returns null only for a failed allocation. When
the string of valid bytes that are not ASCII could not be allocated, it
gave "" or dropped that run. Its host function and `Bun.CookieMap` throw
for null, and a `Bun.serve` route parameter ends the process.
`Bun.CookieMap` copies a name and a value with `Zig::tryCreateString`.
- A caller that cannot throw (the name of a node:sqlite column) ends the
  process with "Bun has run out of memory" and SIGABRT.
- `decodeURIComponentSIMD` of valid bytes that are not ASCII, and a
  cookie whose escape needs a 16-bit buffer.
- An ASCII node:sqlite TEXT cell under the WTF cap of debug builds.
- The SQLite child of the address-space test reads a CAST. It wrote a
  table first, which left 20 MiB of the limit. The loop that held no
  block is removed.

Status

Reproduced on main (11c3671) with a release build on Linux x64. Run ( ulimit -v 4000000; bun repro.mjs ) with the script from the Notes of the PR description. Main ends with panic(main thread): Segmentation fault at address 0xBBADBEEF (exit 139). This branch prints RangeError: Out of memory.

PR: #47149

CI (build 134321, commit 75e3be7)

  • No job failed hard. Every regular test lane that ran is green: Linux x64 and aarch64 with glibc and with musl, x64 ASAN, Windows x64 and aarch64, macOS aarch64. The new tests in test/js/node/buffer-oom.test.ts ran there. The macOS x64 lanes still wait for agents.
  • The 69 red jobs are all test-aot-drawn, which the pipeline marks soft_fail. The full ahead-of-time compiler lanes run for this PR because it changes four call lines in BunAOTCompile.cpp and BunAOTRuntime.cpp.
  • The 28 failing files are all in test/aot: internal compiler errors and code-shape expectations on generated programs. The build of the base commit on main (134092) fails tests of the same families, for example generated-code-of-idioms-7 and generated-code-of-idioms-8.

Walkthrough

The change replaces several UTF-8 conversions with Zig’s lossy converter. It adds fallible allocation handling to selected string, cookie, URI-decoding, route-parameter, and SQLite paths. Tests cover allocation limits and malformed UTF-8.

Changes

UTF-8 Conversion and OOM Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Conversion helpers and failure contract
src/jsc/bindings/helpers.h, src/jsc/bindings/headers-handwritten.h, src/jsc/bindings/BunString.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/ZigGlobalObject.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/root-pch.h
Adds fallible string creation and lossy UTF-8 conversion with explicit failure handling. BunString__createUTF8ForJS and BunString__fromUTF8 use the conversion helpers. The previous conversion API is poisoned, and the Bun__outOfMemory() declaration moves to the handwritten header.
Binding conversion call sites
src/jsc/bindings/BunAOTCompile.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/BunAOTRuntime.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/BunProcess.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/JSEnvironmentVariableMap.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/JSX509CertificatePrototype.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/LintAsk.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/LintNodes.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/NodeHTTP.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/napi.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/uws_bindings.cpp
These call sites use Zig’s lossy UTF-8 conversion in place of the prior invalid-sequence-replacing conversion. They specify crash or report handling where described.
Allocation-aware decoding and parsing
src/jsc/bindings/CookieMap.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/decodeURIComponentSIMD.cpp, src/jsc/bindings/decodeURIComponentSIMD.h, src/jsc/bindings/ServerRouteList.cpp, test/js/node/buffer-oom.test.ts
Cookie parsing, URI decoding, and route parameters now handle allocation failures. Tests cover allocation limits across these and other APIs, plus malformed UTF-8 boundary cases.
SQLite text conversion and failure propagation
src/jsc/bindings/sqlite/*, test/js/node/buffer-oom.test.ts
SQLite text and metadata conversions use a JavaScript-facing conversion path that reports allocation failures. Tests cover SQLite text, SQL strings, and metadata under allocation limits.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the null-input contract of the new converter against each site that can now receive null: every sqliteTextToJS caller (NodeSqlite.cpp:344, :2555, :2574 and JSSQLStatement.cpp:2411) rejects a null or empty text pointer before the call, and BunString__fromUTF8 only reaches the lossy path after validate_utf8 fails, so the all-ASCII fast path cannot mask an invalid input. The 1-char16_t-per-byte sizing of the 1024-element stack buffer holds for the all-0xFF worst case, and the new test exercises 1023/1024/1025/1026 at both ends of it.

Extended reasoning...

The change replaces 22 call sites of WTF::String::fromUTF8ReplacingInvalidSequences across src/jsc/bindings with a new fallible Zig::convertUTF8ToStringLossy, adds a compile-time poison of the WTF name, reworks decodeURIComponentSIMD and CookieMap to propagate allocation failure, and adds subprocess OOM tests. It touches request-parsing surfaces (route parameters, cookies, node:http URL/method) but no auth or crypto logic. Five verified findings are already posted inline, so a human look is warranted; this note only records the adjacent null-contract and buffer-sizing checks that were examined and did not turn up further problems.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/jsc/bindings/sqlite/NodeSqlite.cpp — node:sqlite users get a process abort ("Bun has run out of memory") for an input-sized SQLite string where a catchable RangeError was available. NodeSqlite.cpp:1012 (db filename), :1513 (authorizer strings) and :2510 (column metadata) call sqliteText, which passes WTF::FailureAction::Crash at SqliteUserFunction.h:43, while :1012 and :2510 run under a DECLARE_THROW_SCOPE and the PR added sqliteTextToJS for exactly this. These strings are sized by user SQL and file paths, not by a constant. Fix: route every sqliteText call that runs under a ThrowScope through sqliteTextToJS (or Report plus throwOutOfMemoryError) so the operation throws; keep Crash only where no scope exists.

    Why this was flagged

    Trigger: a node:sqlite call whose SQLite-owned text cannot be allocated: DatabaseSync.location/filename getter (NodeSqlite.cpp:1012, path from the user), setAuthorizer callback arguments (NodeSqlite.cpp:1513, identifiers from the user's SQL), and column metadata (NodeSqlite.cpp:2510). Each goes through sqliteText -> Zig::convertUTF8ToStringLossy(..., WTF::FailureAction::Crash) at SqliteUserFunction.h:43, so utf8ConversionAllocationFailed at BunString.cpp:85 calls Bun__outOfMemory() and the process ends. All three sites already hold a ThrowScope (e.g. the getter at :1000-1007 uses scope for RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION), and the same PR added sqliteTextToJS (SqliteUserFunction.h:52) which throws RangeError: Out of memory instead. These are sites with user-sized input (file paths and SQL identifiers), so the same fix is owed here. Remedy: use sqliteTextToJS at every sqliteText caller that owns a scope.

    Verification: sqliteText at SqliteUserFunction.h:41-43 passes WTF::FailureAction::Crash, so BunString.cpp:82-87 utf8ConversionAllocationFailed calls Bun__outOfMemory(). The PR adds sqliteTextToJS (SqliteUserFunction.h:50-58) but not at NodeSqlite.cpp:1012, 1513 and 2510, so an allocation failure ends the process instead of a catchable RangeError. On the base commit these same sites CRASH()ed on allocation failure.

- A `Bun.serve` route parameter: `callRoute` creates the request, then
  throws `RangeError: Out of memory`. The server handles it as an
  exception from the route handler. It ended the process.
- `columnNames` and `declaredTypes` of a bun:sqlite statement, and
  `columns()` of a node:sqlite statement, use `sqliteTextToJS`.
- buffer-oom.test.ts: a test of the route parameter under the WTF cap of
  debug builds, and three SQLite rows. The tests of the ASAN block run
  one at a time.

Reply to the additional finding of the review (sqliteText callers in NodeSqlite.cpp):

  • :2510, the fields of columns(): done in 523046a. They throw RangeError: Out of memory. The same commit does columnNames and declaredTypes of bun:sqlite. Each has a row in the SQLite text test.
  • :1513, the arguments of an authorizer: not changed. That code runs inside a SQLite callback under a top exception scope. A throw there needs the transient scope that its return-value errors use, so it is more than a swap of the helper.
  • :1012, location(): not changed. SQLite bounds the length of a database path, so no test can make that string fail.

The other sqliteText callers make property keys and error messages. They keep the exit, now with the out-of-memory report, and the description names them.

Major · Reset the statement and mark the iterator done when row conversion throws. · NodeSqlite.cpp:2726

src/jsc/bindings/sqlite/NodeSqlite.cpp:2726
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reset the statement and mark the iterator done when row conversion throws.

If row conversion throws, next() returns through RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION without calling sqlite3_reset() or setDone(). The row was already stepped, so the cursor stays on it. The next next() call runs sqlite3_step() again and advances past the failed row. An INSERT ... RETURNING statement can also keep its write transaction open until it is reset or finalized. Handle this path like the step-failure branch does: reset the statement, exhaust the iterator, and keep the pending exception.

Reply to the review comment on NodeSqlite.cpp:2726 (the node:sqlite iterator after a row conversion throws):

No change in this PR. That path is not new. ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE for an integer that needs a BigInt, and a BLOB whose copy fails, already leave next() through the same RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION. Node does the same: in v26.3.0, StatementSyncIterator::Next returns when ExtractRowValues fails, with no sqlite3_reset and the iterator not done (src/node_sqlite.cc:3719).

The branch above it resets on a failed step, and its comment names that as a deliberate divergence from Node. The same treatment for a failed conversion is a decision for all of these errors, not only for the new RangeError, so it belongs in a change of its own with a test.

Before this PR, a TEXT cell whose string could not be allocated ended the process at that point.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the reworked route-parameter path in the latest push: callRoute now creates the JSBunRequest with a null params before throwing, and JSBunRequest tolerates that (m_params is initialized via WriteBarrierEarlyInit and null-checked in params()), so the request the server owns after the RangeError is well-formed. The bun:sqlite columnNames/declaredTypes getters that moved to sqliteTextToJS check the scope after each conversion and before each putDirectIndex.

Extended reasoning...

The latest commit reworks ServerRouteList::callRoute to throw instead of calling Bun__outOfMemory() and routes bun:sqlite and node:sqlite column metadata through the fallible sqliteTextToJS; the null-params path through JSBunRequest::create was traced and found safe, and the new RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION placements in JSSQLStatement.cpp are correct. The two remaining findings are nits posted inline.

The exception check was in a lambda. The five fields are in an array
now, and `RETURN_IF_EXCEPTION` returns from the host function.

The comment of the stack-buffer test says that the test passed before
the converter changed, and why it stays.

Thanks for 75e3be7 — the columns() loop and the test comment resolve both points from my last pass, and this run found no new bugs. Given the scope (one converter replacing 22 call sites, with allocation-failure semantics changing from a crash to either a thrown RangeError or a controlled OOM abort), a human look would still be worthwhile before merging.

What was reviewed this round:

  • convertUTF8ToStringLossy: the 1024-unit stack buffer is fully consumed by tryCreateString before return; the char16_t-per-byte sizing matches WTF's own invariant, so the RELEASE_ASSERT on conversion success holds.
  • decodeURIComponentSIMD: RecordOverflow + didOverflow() on a failed literal run, shrinkToFit() before hasOverflowed(), and null propagated to throws in the host function, CookieMap::create, and callRoute (after JSBunRequest::create has taken ownership of requestPtr).
  • NodeSqlite.cpp jsStatementSyncColumns: exception check now exits the host function directly; no check macro remains inside a lambda.
Extended reasoning...

The PR adds Zig::convertUTF8ToStringLossy in src/jsc/bindings/BunString.cpp, poisons WTF's fromUTF8ReplacingInvalidSequences in root-pch.h, rewires 22 binding call sites across process.report, X509, lint, AOT, SQLite, HTTP, uWS, napi and env-var code, makes decodeURIComponentSIMD fallible, and adds ten tests in test/js/node/buffer-oom.test.ts. It touches no auth, crypto, or injection surface; the sensitive part is allocation-failure handling, where 20 sites deliberately keep Crash mode and abort via Bun__outOfMemory. The latest commit 75e3be7 addressed both nits from the prior run and the bug hunt ran dry with no findings, but the change is large and alters process-exit behavior under memory pressure, which decided defer over approve.
