test(zlib): run the libdeflate shared-input children one at a time on the global Worker - #47192
On a debug + ASAN build, two tests of zlib.test.js fail at random: libdeflate <gzip|deflate> doesn't write past its output buffer while another thread writes to the shared input. The error is this test timed out after 5000ms. Here 5 of 13 runs failed.
Each child imports node:worker_threads in two threads (test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js:160). That costs a debug build about 1.5 s of CPU. Its 500 compress calls cost 0.35 s.
Both children run at once, each with two busy threads.
Fix
The child starts its writer with the global Worker and sends the SharedArrayBuffer with postMessage. A child takes 1.4 s, down from 2.6 s.
The two tests run one at a time: 1.9 s per test (median), against 2.8 s with two at once.
CI passes --timeout (90 s or more). A local bun test gives a test 5 s.
Not chosen: fewer calls on a debug build. Without the libdeflate patch, the first bad write came as late as call 477.
Not chosen: a longer timeout (test/CLAUDE.md). Other tests of the file timed out in 5 of the same 84 runs.
Notes
All numbers are from one machine: linux x64, 12 virtual CPUs with a capped share of the host (steal in /proc/stat), debug + ASAN build of main 11c3671.

A test that timed out counts with the time the runner printed.
The runs of main are from the morning, the other two rows from the afternoon of the same day. 10 runs of each of the two lower rows were in turn: the median was 2.6 s with two at once and 2.1 s with one at a time, the p90 3.9 s and 2.7 s.
38 of the 54 runs have the text of this PR. The other 16 differ only by the comment above the test.
13 of the 54 runs check a single run after a pause: 6 after a forced drop of the page cache, 7 after 3 minutes with nothing running. The two tests passed in all 13. The first child took 0.9 to 4.5 s.
The first version of this PR kept the two children at once and gave the two tests a timeout of 60 s on debug builds. With it, 33 of 33 runs passed in the morning, one of them with tests of 5.6 s and 5.9 s. Review asked for no timeout. It is removed.

What is left. This machine stalls at times, and every test that spawns a child pays.
It drops its page cache from time to time (drop_pagecache in /proc/vmstat). The first children that start after a drop read the 1.6 GB binary from the disk again. After a drop that I forced, the two tests took 9.4 to 11.0 s in 2 of 2 runs. In 220 runs of a child alone, one start took 24 s, with a drop in the same run. These two tests are the first in the file that spawn a child.
In the 84 runs of the afternoon, the two tests timed out in 2 runs. Other tests of the file timed out in 5 runs: zlib.zstd > fully works as a stream.Transform twice, zlib.brotli > fully works as a stream.Transform once, an output longer than deflateBound() is whole once (at its 60 s), and the mapped-input test once (at its 20 s).
Does the test find the bug as often? Two builds that have the bug:
Release, 1.4.3 canary 367d939 (before Hardening: fix crashes across the runtime, bundler, dev server, shell and CLI #46021). The two tests through bun test -t, 60 runs of each shape in turn, 120 tests each: 101 fail on main, 104 with the new child and two at once, 102 with the new child and one at a time. The child alone, 300 runs of each in turn: the old child fails 257 times, the new child 256 times.
Debug build of main with patches/libdeflate/bounded-emit.patch reverted. Main copies a SharedArrayBuffer before libdeflate reads it (shared: "copied" in src/runtime/api/BunObject.bind.ts). So for this measurement the child compresses a shared Bun.mmap view, which main does not copy. The loop and the writer are those of the test, one child at a time. ASAN reports heap-buffer-overflow.

The median differs from batch to batch. In the 200 runs of each that were in turn, the mean was call 39 (old) and call 46 (new).
With 250 calls, 4 of 316 runs of the old writer find nothing, and with 125 calls 26 of 316. So the 500 calls stay.
Release build: 1.4.4 canary 11c3671, the commit this PR is based on. The file passes 3 of 3 runs, and the two tests take 41 to 103 ms each. The two tests pass 40 of 40 runs with -t.
The worker side: the worker reads the buffer from a message, because a worker has no reader for the workerData option without node:worker_threads. worker.onerror rejects the promise that the main thread awaits, so a writer that throws fails the child at once. Without it the child waits for its timeout.
Not changed: the mapped-input test at the end of the file keeps node:worker_threads and its 20 s timeout. It is the only test of the libdeflate patch, and I cannot measure a change of its writer on a release ASAN build.
…Worker
On a debug build, the two "libdeflate <kind> doesn't write past its
output buffer while another thread writes to the shared input" tests
time out after 5000 ms in about 4 of 10 runs of zlib.test.js.
Each test spawns a child that imports node:worker_threads in its main
thread and in its writer thread. A debug build needs about 1.5 s of CPU
for that. The 500 compress calls that the test is about need 0.35 s.
The child now starts the writer with the global Worker and sends it the
SharedArrayBuffer with postMessage. An error in the writer rejects the
promise that the main thread waits on. The calls, the levels and the
checks do not change.
The two tests also get the debug-only 60 s timeout that this file
already uses. A debug build on a busy machine can still need more than
5 s: the writer is a busy loop, and two of these children run at once.
Status: ready for review. The diff is green. This PR changes one test file.
How I reproduced the failure (linux x64, debug + ASAN build of main 11c3671):
bun bd test test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js: 5 of 13 runs fail in the two libdeflate <gzip|deflate> doesn't write past its output buffer while another thread writes to the shared input tests. The error is this test timed out after 5000ms.
bun bd test test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js -t "while another thread writes to the shared input" with four busy loops on the machine: 5 of 5 runs fail.
With this PR, the two tests fail in 1 of 54 runs of the file.
CI: no lane reports a failure in test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js. The red tests of builds 134477, 134530 and 134564 are all test/aot/* files on the test-aot-drawn lanes. This PR does not touch them, and four of them fail on main too. Every other failure passed on a retry.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two things in the rewritten fixture and ruled them out: worker.postMessage(input) before the worker module has loaded is queued until self.onmessage is installed, so the "ready" handshake cannot be lost; and a writer thread dying mid-loop going unnoticed (unref'd worker, main loop keeps compressing) is unchanged from the base fixture, not a regression of this change.
Extended reasoning...
Test-only change to test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js that swaps the spawned fixture's node:worker_threads usage for the global Worker plus postMessage and adds a debug-only per-test timeout; no security-sensitive surface. The inline findings (the copied SharedArrayBuffer path and the added timeout) already call for a human look, so this note only records what else was examined.
Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):
🟣 test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js — The rewritten fixture certifies nothing about libdeflate on this tree: compress(view, { library: "libdeflate" }) at test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js:178 copies a SharedArrayBuffer-backed view before libdeflate reads it, so the writer thread's races never reach the code the test title names. The PR rewrote the writer and asserts it "finds the bug as often", but that was measured only with a Bun.mmap input, not with the fixture that merges. Fix: either feed libdeflate a view the runtime does not copy (the mmap input the author measured with) or state in the test that it exercises the copy, so a regression in the libdeflate bound stays detectable.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: every run of the two it.concurrent.each(["gzip","deflate"]) tests. compressionInput in src/runtime/api/BunObject.bind.ts:70 is declared shared: "copied" with the comment that libdeflate reads each block twice so shared buffers are copied first; deflateSync and gzipSync (lines 72, 84) use it. The fixture's main thread passes new Uint8Array(input) over a SharedArrayBuffer (zlib.test.js:176-178), so the bytes libdeflate sees are a private snapshot and the writer loop at lines 199-204 can never race it. The assertions at lines 179 and 181 therefore cannot fail for the reason the test name at line 157 and the comment at lines 154-155 give; reverting patches/libdeflate/bounded-emit.patch would not fail this test. This PR rewrote the writer with a stated goal of keeping detection parity and verified that parity on a different fixture (the PR notes say the measurement used Bun.mmap). Remedy: use an uncopied input or rename the test to what it checks.
Verification: pre-existing. Triggering condition: every run of the two rewritten tests on this tree. test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js:176-178 calls Bun.gzipSync/deflateSync, whose input is declared at src/runtime/api/BunObject.bind.ts:70 shared: "copied", so the Uint8Array over the SharedArrayBuffer is snapshotted before libdeflate runs. The writer loop at lines 199-204 therefore never races libdeflate on this tree. Not a security issue.

Walkthrough
The zlib shared-input test now runs its gzip and deflate cases sequentially. It uses the global Worker API to send a shared buffer to a worker and coordinate readiness and errors through event handlers.

The test creates a global Worker and sends it the shared buffer. The worker receives the buffer through self.onmessage, mutates it, and signals readiness with postMessage. The gzip and deflate cases no longer run concurrently.

Explanation
The description follows the template's two sections, "What does this PR do?" and "How did you verify your code works?". It states the problem, the fix, the measured effect on test runtime and pass rate, and the verification commands and results on debug and release builds. It also gives background and alternatives considered. Its verification is detailed, and it explains why the change is safe. The main gaps are that the "What does this PR do?" content is spread across Problem, Fix, and Background, and that the description says "Behaviour change: none" while the PR objectives mention a 60-second debug timeout that the description says was removed. The description is long and includes a large collapsed notes section. These gaps do not stop the description from being mostly complete. The template's required sections are present and substantively filled in.

Remove the debug-only timeout of the two tests. The default applies.
Each child keeps two threads busy: the compress loop and the writer.
On a debug build, two children at once take 2.3 to 3.4 s each (median
of two batches), which is close to the 5 s default. One child at a
time takes 1.9 s.
On a release build from before #46021 the two tests fail as often
either way: 104 of 120 tests with two children at once, 102 of 120
with one at a time.

test(zlib): start the libdeflate shared-input writer with the global Worker
test(zlib): run the libdeflate shared-input children one at a time on the global Worker
Oct 28, 2026
On the finding outside the diff (the input that Bun copies before libdeflate reads it):
It is correct. Bun.gzipSync and Bun.deflateSync copy a SharedArrayBuffer view first (shared: "copied", src/runtime/api/BunObject.bind.ts:70). Hardening: fix crashes across the runtime, bundler, dev server, shell and CLI #46021 added the copy, the libdeflate patch and these two tests together. On this tree the two tests cover the copy. Without the copy, a call that races gets insufficient space from the patched libdeflate, and the child throws. With an input that is not copied, that is about 3 % of the calls on a debug build.
The bound in libdeflate has its own test at the end of the file: libdeflate doesn't write past its output buffer when another thread rewrites a mapped input. Its input is a Bun.mmap view, which Bun does not copy. It runs on ASAN builds.
The release measurement in this PR used the two tests as they merge, with the SharedArrayBuffer. That build (1.4.3 canary, before Hardening: fix crashes across the runtime, bundler, dev server, shell and CLI #46021) has neither the copy nor the patch: 102 of 120 tests fail, against 101 with the tests of main. Only the debug measurement needed a Bun.mmap input, because a debug build of main has the copy. The notes in the PR body say which is which.

LGTM — the second commit drops the debug-only timeout override I flagged earlier, and the remaining change is a small, test-only rework of the fixture.
What was reviewed:
Worker handshake: postMessage(input) is queued until the worker's self.onmessage is installed, "ready" is still posted after the patterns are built and before the write loop, so the race window the test exercises is unchanged; onerror is wired to reject.
Compression loop, reserved bound, round-trip check, and the spawn/Promise.all drain are untouched.
it.concurrent.each -> it.each carries an inline reason (two busy threads per child near the 5 s default on debug), which satisfies the stated-reason requirement for staying serial; isDebug is still used at zlib.test.js:312 so the import stays live.
Extended reasoning...
The diff touches only test/js/node/zlib/zlib.test.js, swapping the spawned fixture's node:worker_threads usage for the global Worker API (Bun.isMainThread, self.onmessage, postMessage) and running the two libdeflate shared-input cases sequentially with a stated reason. It touches no security-sensitive surface and no CODEOWNERS-covered path. The second commit removed the per-test timeout override raised in the prior review, no third-party objections are outstanding, the assertions and workload are unchanged, and the hunt ran to a dry streak, which decided approve.
