Problem

  • bun build --app prints done and exits with code 0 when a { pages } page fails to prerender (React's getStaticPaths). renderRoutesForProdStatic drops the promise of each such page (src/js/builtins/Bake.ts:173).
  • On today's react@experimental, renderToStaticHtml (bun-framework-react/ssr.tsx:103) never settles for a page that throws outside <Suspense>, or that has several large boundaries. The build never exits.

Fix

  • The three getParams arms await each page.
  • renderToStaticHtml also rejects from onShellError. write() of the static stream and of the dev server stream returns true. A failing page prints main's error: lines, and the build exits with code 1.
  • Verified: test/bake/dev/production.test.ts (8 new cases, 7 fail on main), react-response.test.ts (1 new case).
  • Self-reviewed: 18 concerns raised, 13 addressed (Notes names the rest).

Background

Downsides

  • Behavior change (canary or feature flag): a failing { pages } page now gives exit code 1. Before: the error, then done.
  • A { pages } page that never settles: the build now never exits, as for an array page on main. Before: done, exit code 0, no page.
  • Binary: +358 B of framework source, -217 B of builtin text. Per React page: 1 more closure.
Notes

For a maintainer. Two decisions are open.

Where it came from. This PR supersedes #33216 (closed). No user reported either symptom. Two review comments on #39488 ask for the two edits: #39488 (comment) (the { pages } arm) and #39488 (comment) (reject in onShellError, and let onError log). #39488 has the same edits inside a larger change.

The arms. getParams gives the params of a dynamic route as a sync iterable, an async iterable, or { pages: [...] }. renderRoutesForProdStatic has one arm for each form.

Why the parts go together. Debug builds, linux x64. react and react-dom 0.0.0-experimental-dc9aed36-20261027 with react-server-dom-bun 0.0.0-experimental-603e6108-20241029. That is what the install note of bun build --app resolved to when I measured (bun i react@experimental react-dom@experimental react-server-dom-bun react-refresh@experimental):

page main Bake.ts alone Bake.ts and onShellError this PR
server component throws, getStaticPaths returns { paths } done, exit 0 no exit exit 1 exit 1
server component throws, getStaticPaths returns an array no exit no exit exit 1 exit 1
server component throws, static route no exit no exit exit 1 exit 1
client component throws outside <Suspense>, static route no exit not run exit 1 exit 1
no error, three <Suspense> boundaries of 7 KB, static route no exit not run no exit done, exit 0
the same page from { paths } done, exit 0, no page in dist not run no exit done, exit 0

"no exit" means the process was killed after 40 s to 100 s. A build that ends takes 2 s to 10 s. With the harness pin (0.0.0-experimental-603e6108-20241029 for all three packages), main exits 0 for the first row and 1 for the next three, builds the last two, and this PR does the same with exit 1 for the first row.

The callbacks. renderToPipeableStream of a component that throws, with no <Suspense>:

  • react-dom 603e6108-20241029: onError, onShellError, onAllReady.
  • react-dom dc9aed36-20261027: onError, onShellError.

What a build prints now. For the first row, three error: lines and exit code 1:

error: page failed: bad
error: An error occurred in the Server Components render. [...]
error: Route "pages/[id].tsx" cannot be pre-rendered to a static page.

React logs the first two: the error of the component, and the copy of it that the HTML render gets. The build adds the third. Main prints the same three lines with the harness pin, and then done.

12 fixtures were built with react-dom 603e6108-20241029 and with dc9aed36-20261027, and 9 of them with the pinned one wrapped so that it does not call onAllReady after a shell error:

  • Each page that fails gives exit code 1 and the error: lines that main prints with the pin. The fixtures: a server component on a static route, from { paths } and from an array, a client component outside <Suspense>, a rejection with no value, and three pages with two errors each.
  • A page with no error, and a page whose server or client component throws inside <Suspense>, give done and exit code 0. index.html and index.rsc are byte-identical to main's, and the error: lines are the same.

write(). React writes completed <Suspense> boundaries one after the other. After a write() that did not return true, it stops and waits for a drain event. StaticRscInjectionStream (the static build) and RscInjectionStream (the dev server) returned nothing and emit no drain.

  • Static build: react-dom 603e6108-20241029 writes the boundaries of rows 5 and 6 of the table inline (the HTML has no $RC script), so the pinned React is not affected. react-dom dc9aed36-20261027 writes them out of line.
  • Dev server, also with the pinned React: a streamed page with two boundaries, where the first has more than 2 KB of HTML, never gets its end. The dev server closes the request after the 10 s idle limit (ECONNRESET). The new case in react-response.test.ts is this page.
  • The two lines and the dev server case are from bake: consolidate the open robobun dev-server, HMR runtime, production build and router fixes #39488 (9d19e58).

Earlier shapes of the React half. Both let prerender reject with the error of the component, where main catches the rejection and returns undefined.

The $isPromisePending check. A review of #20745 asked for it (#20745 (comment)): await only a promise that is not resolved. doGenerateRoute is async and awaits the framework's prerender first. So the promise of a page that succeeds is always pending when the arm looks at it. The only settled promise the check skipped was a rejected one: a prerender that is not async and throws. The order of getParams requests, prerender calls and Bun.write calls, with the microtask turns between them, is the same as on main in the three getParams forms (100 pages each, 1 and 2 files per page): 2 turns per page for a sync iterable, 4 for an async iterable.

Cost.

  • Bake.ts builtin text: 3552 B to 3335 B in release mode, 5735 B to 5368 B in debug mode.
  • ssr.tsx 14582 B to 14940 B. server.tsx is not changed. The binary embeds both.
  • Per prerendered React page: 1 closure (onShellError).
  • No host function, no binding entry.

Tests.

  • production.test.ts, block a page that fails to prerender fails the build, 8 cases.
    • Three cases with a framework that has no dependency, one for each getParams form. The page throws and prerender is not async.
    • Two React pages from getStaticPaths: one throws an error, one rejects with no value. The first runs on a react-dom that does not call onAllReady after a shell error, the second on the pinned one.
    • A React client component that throws outside <Suspense>, on the react-dom that does not call onAllReady.
    • A React page with three large <Suspense> boundaries, on a react-dom that waits for drain after a write() that did not return true. It must build.
    • A React client component that throws inside <Suspense>: the build exits 0, and the page has the fallback and its client script. This case passes on main too.
  • The test harness pins react-dom 0.0.0-experimental-603e6108-20241029. So the cases for the newer react-dom wrap react-dom/server.node.js in the fixture. The wrapper for drain is stricter than React: it stops at the next write(), not at the next boundary.
  • On a debug build of main 000ef50, 7 of the 8 fail: five with exit code 0 and done, and two do not exit (the test kills them after 60 s). With this PR all 8 pass, and so do the other 21 tests of the file.
  • With only the onShellError line removed, 2 cases fail. With only the return true of the static stream removed, 1 case fails.
  • react-response.test.ts: the new case fails on main and passes here. The 17 cases of the three other React dev server files pass (request-cookies, server-sourcemap, ssg-pages-router).
  • The React cases are not concurrent. On a debug build each takes 3 s to 5 s alone, and more than the default 5 s limit when five run at once.

Self-review. The review of this shape found 18 concerns. Changed after it: the two return true lines with their cases, the case for a server component inside <Suspense> (removed, see "For a maintainer"), the react-dom wrapper on the getStaticPaths case, React cases that run one at a time, a 60 s limit for each build of the test, and this text. Not done:

  • A wait in build_with_vm (src/runtime/bake/production/mod.rs:1179) that ends when nothing is pending, with a check for unhandled rejections. It is a separate change, and Run a promise wait as a loop of its own and skip the poll once it settles #45923 changes that wait loop. Until then the first two items under "Not in this PR" stay.
  • A lint rule for a map callback that returns nothing, and the install note that names the experimental tag.

Not in this PR. Each was measured on this branch.

no test proof · iteration 1 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/bake/dev/production.test.ts

`renderRoutesForProdStatic` did not await each page.

- The `{ pages: [...] }` arm dropped the promise of each page. The
build printed `done` before the pages settled. A page that failed
printed its error, and the build exited with code 0.
- The two iterator arms awaited a page only when its promise was
pending. A `prerender` that is not async and throws gave a rejected
  promise, which nothing awaited.

All three arms now await the promise of each page. `doGenerateRoute`
is async and awaits the framework's `prerender` first, so the promise
of a page that succeeds is always pending at that point. The pending
check only skipped rejected promises.

The React framework must settle for that await to end:

- `prerender` caught a render error and returned `undefined`. It now
stops the flight render and rejects with the error of the component.
- `renderToStaticHtml` only resolved from `onAllReady`. A newer
react-dom does not call `onAllReady` after a shell error, so the
result never settled. `onShellError` now rejects it. `onError` only
collects, because React recovers from an error inside a `<Suspense>`
  boundary.

Walkthrough

Route generation now waits for generated routes. React prerendering passes server-component errors to static rendering, which handles shell failures and logs rendering errors. Production-build tests cover route parameter forms, rendering failures, and Suspense fallbacks.

Status: ready for review. CI is green: build 135565 passed. The darwin any x64 - test-bun lane had no agent for more than 4 hours. It ran in the end, and it passed.

One flaky annotation is in a bake file: test/bake/dev/server-sourcemap.test.ts failed once in the parallel batch on Windows 2019 x64 and passed alone. That test reads the output of the dev server directly after the request.

How I reproduced it (debug builds of main 000ef50, linux x64):

  • A framework with no dependency. routes/[id].ts has a default export that throws, and getParams returns { pages: [{ id: "x" }] }. bun build --app ./app.ts prints the error, prints done, and exits with code 0. An array and an async generator do the same when prerender is not async.
  • The built-in React framework with react and react-dom 0.0.0-experimental-dc9aed36-20261027. A page that throws outside <Suspense> on a static route never exits (killed after 40 s or more). With getStaticPaths returning { paths }, the build prints done and exits with code 0.
  • The same React version, and a page with no error and three <Suspense> boundaries of 7 KB. On a static route the build never exits. From { paths } the build prints done, exits with code 0, and writes no page.
  • The dev server with the pinned React: a streamed page with two <Suspense> boundaries never gets its end, and the dev server closes the request after 10 s.
  • 7 of the 8 new cases in test/bake/dev/production.test.ts fail on main, and so does the new case in test/bake/dev/react-response.test.ts. All pass with this PR, and so do the other tests of the two files.

#47357 (two pages on one output file) is stacked on this PR.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the path on the harness-pinned react-dom where onAllReady still fires after onShellError and pipes into the already-destroyed StaticRscInjectionStream (ssr.tsx:131): write/end only push chunks and call an already-settled resolve, so the earlier rejection stands and nothing throws or hangs there.

Extended reasoning...

The change touches the prod static prerender loop in src/js/builtins/Bake.ts and the React framework's prerender/renderToStaticHtml error wiring in server.tsx and ssr.tsx, with new tests in test/bake/dev/production.test.ts; no security-sensitive surface. Four verified findings are posted inline, so a human look is already signalled; this note only records the one additional path examined and ruled out.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Comment thread test/bake/dev/production.test.ts Resolved
The flight render of `prerender` stopped at its first error. That
failed a page whose server component throws inside a `<Suspense>`
boundary, which main builds with the fallback. It also never settled
when a component rejected with no value: the stream was destroyed
without an error.

The flight render now only collects its errors. `renderToStaticHtml`
rejects from `onShellError`. When the shell error is the copy of a
server component's error, it rejects with the error that the component
threw. A page that renders a fallback logs its errors and builds.

The React cases of the test run concurrently.

Cover later-page failures for each generic parameter shape.

The generic fixtures use only one page. Add a successful first page followed by a rejecting second page for each shape. The current implementation handles this case, so this is test coverage hardening rather than a functional defect.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 000ef5037303); the change keeps it reachable.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

The follow-up commits address the points from the earlier round (Flight onError is now collect-only so a server component inside <Suspense> prerenders the fallback, a falsy rejection settles stream.result because StaticRscInjectionStream.destroy calls its own reject directly, and the React cases run as test.concurrent). Beyond the inline finding, I also checked that the react-dom shim in the shell-error test is hermetic: tempDirWithBakeDeps copies node_modules per test via cpSync, so the rewritten server.node.js cannot leak into the sibling cases.

Extended reasoning...

The change touches the prod static-render builtin in src/js/builtins/Bake.ts and the React framework's prerender/SSR path (server.tsx, ssr.tsx), making a failed page reject through to the build instead of being dropped, and adds six subprocess tests in test/bake/dev/production.test.ts. No security-sensitive surface is involved. One confirmed finding (collected Flight errors go unprinted after a shell error or once HTML is ready) is posted inline, and the PR is a user-visible behavior change to bake's build exit status, so a human look is still warranted rather than an approval.

robobun and others added 2 commits October 29, 2026 14:49
… report of a failed page

`prerender` and its flight render are as on main again. React logs each error
when it happens. A page with no HTML gives the build error
`Route "..." cannot be pre-rendered to a static page.`

`renderToStaticHtml` has one new callback. `onShellError` rejects the result,
because a newer react-dom does not call `onAllReady` after a shell error.

The React cases of the test use `tempDir`, so each case removes its directory.
React takes any other return value of `write()` as a full buffer. It then
waits for a "drain" event before it writes the next completed Suspense
boundary. The two streams of the React framework never emit that event.

- `StaticRscInjectionStream` (`bun build --app`): with react-dom
0.0.0-experimental-dc9aed36-20261027, a page with several large Suspense
  boundaries never gave a result.
- `RscInjectionStream` (the dev server): a streamed response could stop after
one Suspense boundary and never send the next one.

The two lines and the dev server test are from #39488.

In `production.test.ts`:
- The React cases run one at a time, and `build()` kills a build that does
  not exit in 60 s.
- The `getStaticPaths` case that throws runs on a react-dom that does not call
  `onAllReady` after a shell error.
- A new case builds a page with large Suspense boundaries on a react-dom that
  waits for "drain".
- The case for a server component that throws inside `<Suspense>` is gone.
That page keeps its fallback, so a test must not call it a recovery.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

This version drops the server.tsx changes the earlier inline threads were about, so the diff is now the three getParams arms in Bake.ts, onShellError plus return true in ssr.tsx, and tests. Beyond the inline finding (a pre-existing </body></html> split across Fizz's 2 KB view), I also checked two things and ruled them out: on the pinned react-dom, onAllReady firing after onShellError only reaches Fizz's closing path (destroy, never end), so the second settle of stream.result is a no-op and end() never runs on an empty chunk list; and a synchronous throw from the missing-param check in callRouteGenerator inside the pages.map still rejects the enclosing async arrow, as before.

Extended reasoning...

The change touches the Bake static prerender loop in src/js/builtins/Bake.ts (await every page promise in all three getParams shapes) and src/runtime/bake/bun-framework-react/ssr.tsx (reject the static render from onShellError, return true from the two pseudo-stream write methods), plus new build and dev-server tests. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The one surviving finding is pre-existing and already posted inline, and the server.tsx code my earlier comments targeted is no longer part of the diff.
