error printer: take the code frame's lines from JSC's line table instead of scanning for newlines - #47424
A source with no source map (// @bun, bundles, eval, node:vm) gets a wrong code frame. For a throw on line 5 it prints 2 | // @bun for line 1 and drops line 4.
The scan in populateStackFramePosition (src/jsc/bindings/ZigException.cpp:183) stops on the newline before the error line (Fix runtime stack trace computation #11581). The next loop then skips one line and numbers the rest one too high.
Fix
populateStackFramePosition takes each line from the provider's line table (SourceProvider::positionInfoForOffset). The four newline scans are gone.
Correct because JSC counts lines with that table, for CRLF and CR too.
Verified: test/js/bun/util/inspect-error.test.js (22 new tests, 21 fail on main). Also ran the bundler, vm and stack tests.
Self-reviewed: 7 concerns raised, 7 addressed. No plugin onLoad fixture: the external-map test covers that arm.
Background
The code frame is the numbered source lines above a printed error. Without a source map, C++ cuts it from JSC's SourceProvider text. The provider also records where each line starts.
// @bun and // @bun @bun-cjs files, bun build --target=bun, --compile and --bytecode output without --sourcemap, eval, new Function, Module.prototype._compile, and node:vm with displayErrors: false.
An error whose source map resolves but whose original text cannot be read (src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:6950). The frame there is the generated text with generated line numbers, as before. It now has the lines above the error.
More shapes of the same scan on main: no line 1 above an error on line 2, no error line and no caret when the position is the line terminator, a \r on each CRLF line, a CR-only source printed as one line, a first line of one character dropped.
Limits of this PR
C++ cuts the frame only while the error has its JSC frames. After error.stack is read, and for node:vm with displayErrors (the default), the frames come from the stack string and Rust's get_lines_in_text reads the lines. That path prints as before.
A position after the last line terminator prints the lines above it and no error line. JSC puts the disposal of a top-level using there.
The entries of sourceLines in the inspector's LifecycleReporter.error no longer start with \n and no longer end with \r. Only tests in this repository read them.
sourceLineView drops a terminator that lineEndFor() in oven-sh/WebKit (Source/JavaScriptCore/parser/SourceProvider.cpp:333) leaves on the last terminated line of a text. It backs over the terminator only if (lineEnd < length). When it tests line0Based + 1 < lineCount(), sourceLineView can go.
Release builds of main da867c6 and of this PR, Linux x64. valgrind, perf and strace are not in the build container. User instructions come from perf_event_open (the counter that perf stat -e instructions:u reads), as (I(30,000 prints) - I(10,000 prints)) / 20,000, three runs. Calls are counted with gdb breakpoints, syscalls with a ptrace counter. A print is one Bun.inspect(error). The fixture is a 7-line // @bun file with the error on line 5.

Tests
inspect-error.test.js: 17 rows through node:vm, indirect eval, new Function and Module.prototype._compile. 3 rows for a source of more than 1024 characters with the error on line 67 (LF, CRLF, CR). 2 spawned files (// @bun, // @bun @bun-cjs) that compare Bun.inspect with the uncaught print. The row "nothing is above an error on line 1" passes on main too. The existing test "external map whose original source is unavailable" now also checks the frame, and fails on main.
bundler_bun.test.ts: bun/TargetBunNoSourcemapMessage now checks the frame. bun/TargetBunNoSourcemapMessageBytecode is new: a --bytecode bundle of more than 1024 characters, so the line table comes out of the bytecode. Both fail on main.
vm-sourceUrl.test.ts.snap: two entries held a one-line frame for a four-line script.
The imports for the new tests are at the end of inspect-error.test.js. An import at the top moves the lines that five inline snapshots of that file hold.
Each clause of the fix fails a test when I remove it: the CRLF case of sourceLineView, its one-character case, and line.lineStart > 0.
Ran on a debug ASAN build: inspect-error.test.js, vm-sourceUrl.test.ts, vm.test.ts, bundler_bun.test.ts, source-positions.test.ts, reportError.test.ts, stack.test.ts, bun-inspector-protocol.test.ts. In vm.test.ts, "doesn't produce cachedData for a source with a 2^27-character string" times out after 5 s in my debug build. That test prints no error.
By hand: executables from bun build --compile, --compile --bytecode and --compile --minify print the right frame.
populateStackFramePosition scanned the source text for '\n' to find the
error line and the lines above it. The scan for the start of the error
line stopped on the newline before it, so the loop for the lines above
skipped one line and numbered the rest one too high.
The source provider has a table of where each line starts. Take the
start and the end of each line from that table.
Reproduced on release 1.4.2 and on a release build of main da867c6. A 7-line // @bun file that throws on line 5 prints 2 | // @bun, 3 | const a = 1;, 4 | const b = 2;, then line 5. The line above the error is missing. eval, new Function, node:vm with displayErrors: false, and bun build --target=bun output print the same shifted frame.
With this PR the frame is lines 1 to 5. test/js/bun/util/inspect-error.test.js has 22 new tests, and 21 of them fail on main.
CI on aec1126 (build 135590) finished as failed: 185 of 188 jobs passed. All three other jobs are shards of darwin any x64 - test-bun.
Two shards expired after about five hours with no agent. They ran no test.
One shard failed on test/aot/parallel/node-http/objects-closed-in-other-ways.ts. That test compares the output of a node:http program compiled ahead of time with the output of plain Bun. The output has no code frame on either side, and a code frame is the only text this PR changes. The first 640 lines of both outputs are the same and both exit codes are 0. The CI log cuts the output before the line that differs, so I did not see it. I reported the test for triage as a failure that this PR does not cause.
The tests of this PR are not in the failure list of any lane. Because two macOS x64 shards did not run, I cannot confirm that all of them ran on macOS x64.
The other entries in the failure list passed on the retry.
Error code-frame source lines now use JavaScriptCore’s recorded line positions. Tests cover generated and unmapped frames across runtime errors, Bun.inspect, eval, VM, compiled functions, CommonJS, and bytecode-enabled bundling.
Source lines are extracted using the provider’s line-position table instead of scanning source bytes for newline characters. The helper removes trailing line terminators, including CRLF.
Tests check code-frame line numbers and formatting across source types and line endings. Bundler tests check generated frames and bytecode cache-hit output. External source-map tests expect generated-source code frames while stack frames remain remapped.

Explanation
The PR description is thorough and largely complete. It follows the template's two required sections. "What does this PR do?" is covered by the Problem, Fix, Background, Downsides, and Notes sections, which state the bug, the change to populateStackFramePosition, and the known limits. "How did you verify your code works?" is covered by the new tests in inspect-error.test.js and bundler_bun.test.ts (with 21 of 22 failing on main), the ASAN debug test run, the manual checks with bun build --compile, and the release-build measurements. The description contains some extra material that goes beyond the template, such as the performance table and the related-PR list. The template structure itself is followed, though the template headings are not used verbatim. The description also contains a few minor inconsistencies: it says 22 new tests in inspect-error.test.js with 21 failing, while the tests section lists 17 + 3 + 2 rows. It also says 19 of 20 new tests fail in the PR objectives, which conflicts with the 21-of-22 figure. These inconsistencies do not block the check.

Add CRLF and CR variants of the end-of-text error case.
The the error position is after the last line terminator case builds its source with the default "\n" terminator, so no fixture places the error position after a final \r\n or \r. The existing CRLF and CR cases put the error on the last line, before its terminator, not at the end of the text. The matching end-of-text case with CRLF and CR terminators would cover that gap.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The replacement makes source-frame extraction depend on a provider's line-position table. A source provider restored through bytecode or disk cache may not have usable line positions unless its restore path preserves them or positionInfoForOffset rebuilds them from the restored source.
The error printer may omit or mis-slice the generated-source code frame, or fail while extracting it.
This can occur when: An error originates in a cache-restored source whose line-start metadata was not retained.

CRLF and CR variants of the end-of-text case. Added in 418a5cb. The row "the error position is after the last line terminator" now runs with LF, CRLF and CR. All three pass with the fix. On main the CRLF source keeps a \r on each line, and the CR-only source prints as one line.
A provider restored from bytecode that has no line table. This case works. LineStartTable::positionInfoForOffset calls ensureBuilt(text), which builds the table from the source text when the provider has none (Source/JavaScriptCore/parser/SourceProvider.cpp:307 and :355 in oven-sh/WebKit at 8c6c963e3c). For a module or a script, getAdjustedPositionForBytecode already takes the line number of the frame from this table, so the table exists before the frame is cut.
A bundle of 1024 characters or more carries the table in its bytecode. bun/TargetBunNoSourcemapMessageBytecode runs that case. It checks the line [Disk Cache] Cache hit for sourceCode and the frame.
A shorter bundle carries no table. A 148-byte --bytecode bundle prints [Disk Cache] Cache hit for sourceCode and the right frame on a release build of this branch.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the new loop's index arithmetic in populateStackFramePosition: line.lineStart > 0 guards the lineStart - 1 lookup, and location.line_zero_based - i cannot go negative because the walk stops at the table's first line. The provider ref()/deref() bookkeeping around the non-owning toStringView slices is unchanged and positionInfoForOffset does not enter JS, so the slices stay valid.
Extended reasoning...
The C++ change replaces four hand-rolled newline scans in src/jsc/bindings/ZigException.cpp with lookups into JSC's LineStartTable, plus a small sourceLineView helper that trims a trailing terminator; tests and two snapshots were updated. No security-sensitive surface is touched. Four inline findings were posted (end-of-source position losing the error line, is8Bit guard still excluding 16-bit sources, multi-line new numbering, and a require-in-describe nit), so a human look is already signalled; this note only records the underflow and lifetime checks that were ruled out.
Four optional findings from the review of 418a5cb. Each thread has the details.
require in the new describe: changed in aec1126. The three modules are import statements at the end of the file, so no inline snapshot moves.
No error line for a position after the last line terminator: kept. The printer does not print an empty error line, and a fallback to the line above disagrees with the at line (5:1).
