perf(daemon): compact retained read tracking state - #265
Read tracking retained growable String headers for immutable message IDs and senders across its bounded per-chat collections. Store those values as Box; receipt drains transfer the buffers back into the existing public String types. Limits and behavior stay unchanged, with no new runtime dependencies.
Paired release measurements on the same Linux runner replayed 75,703 synthetic messages over 1,032 chats. Seven instrumented samples saved 3.12 MiB of live heap for unread scenarios (about 18% after publication and 24% after receipt queries). Fifteen uninstrumented samples reduced median peak RSS by 7–11% across headless, attached, group and already-read cases. CPU/wall distributions overlap; these bridge workloads do not measure a complete connected account.
The reproducible harness uses a test-only counting allocator, /proc and wait4, without CodSpeed, eBPF, root or credentials. docs/daemon-memory.md records baseline/candidate commits, commands, distributions and limitations. Synthetic SQLite coverage separately checks account-scale pagination and decoding.
Validation: daemon all-feature library tests (346 passed, 4 profiling workloads ignored in ordinary runs), all-target/all-feature daemon Clippy, formatting and diff checks. All four release profiling workloads were executed repeatedly with correctness assertions.
Summary by cubic
Adds synthetic account-scale coverage and an unprivileged measurement harness for daemon memory, then uses them to compact read-tracker state: IDs and sender strings now use Box<str> instead of retaining unused String capacity. On the recorded replay workloads, live heap after drain drops about 3.1 MiB (~18%) for unread traffic, peak RSS falls by roughly 3.4 MiB, and CPU/wall distributions overlap. Cache limits, receipt semantics, and public types are unchanged.
The memory-profiling test feature installs a counting allocator in native test binaries only; production allocators are unchanged.
scripts/build-memory-workload.py and scripts/measure-daemon-memory.py run fresh, unprivileged Linux processes with no root, eBPF, or CodSpeed; the driver alternates base/head order, excludes warmups, reports isolated samples, and has failure-path regression tests running in CI.
The fixture covers 1,032 chats, 75,703 messages, and 1,653 contacts, asserting pagination without skips or duplicates, stored payload decoding, search limits, duplicate delivery, badges, receipts, and the publication tail with and without an attached subscriber.
Written for commit 50cc2e0. Summary will update on new commits.

Measurement runs can hang, and an output-path mistake can destroy a workload binary. Add a deadline and reject input/output collisions; these localized risks do not establish a daemon behavior regression.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "perf(daemon): compact retained read tracking state" matches the main change. The read tracker now stores message IDs and sender addresses as Box<str> instead of owned String values, and the receipt path converts them back at the output boundary. The title uses a conventional-commit scope and names the daemon component. It is specific and short, and it does not list files. It omits the memory-measurement harness and the account-scale test, but the PR objectives say those are supporting work, so the title does not need to cover them.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 7.69% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 13 functions across 8 files. WIP: Prepare account-scale coverage for daemon memory optimization
WIP: Add fixtures and workloads for daemon memory profiling
Oct 29, 2026
Please review head e0f2d33 for fixture correctness, test reliability and workload scope. This draft prepares daemon memory profiling; it does not change production behavior or claim measured memory savings.
Please review the updated head 0a9b21a. CI found two sticker test initializers missing fields after the main-branch integrations; the new commit adds only those four synthetic/default fields. No production memory optimization or measured savings are claimed.
Please review the current head bcf9077. Integrated main's #272 fixture fix and resolved its overlap by retaining main's exact fixture. The PR diff is again limited to memory-profiling fixtures/workloads and their instructions; no production optimization or measured RAM reduction.
Please review head a4d0411: immutable read-tracker strings now use Box, with receipt buffer transfer preserving public types. The PR now includes a dependency-free Linux memory harness and paired release measurements; docs/daemon-memory.md records scope and distributions. Please check behavior preservation and instrumentation correctness.

- Around line 98-100: Update the paging test around the chats_page loop to track
the previous chat activity timestamp across page boundaries and assert that each
returned timestamp is strictly lower, while retaining the existing uniqueness
check.
- Line 119: In the paged message loop, replace the `message.message.is_some()`
check with an assertion that the decoded `conversation` field matches the seeded
fixture text, so the test verifies the actual stored content.
Review comments at @scripts/measure-daemon-memory.py:
- Line 27: Replace the indefinite os.wait4 wait for process.pid with a
configurable per-workload deadline; on expiry, kill and reap the child before
reporting the timeout, while preserving any samples already collected.
- Line 115: Validate args.output against the resolved --base and --head paths
before starting warmups or samples; reject it if it resolves to either binary or
refers to the same existing file through a hard link. Keep the final write_text
call for outputs that pass validation.
