Hi, I'm Pharrel 👋

I'm a UC Berkeley Computer Science student building reliable backend systems, typed web applications, and developer tooling. I'm seeking software engineering internships where I can contribute to a shared codebase, learn through thoughtful review, and ship well-tested software.

Selected engineering work

An end-to-end Premier League analytics platform spanning model training, typed edge APIs, and an interactive React product.

  • Combines player valuation, explainable similarity scouting, and calibrated match forecasting in one deployed system
  • Trained a 12-feature log-target ridge baseline on 414 players, achieving 0.6135 held-out R² and approximately €9.9M MAE
  • Prevents temporal leakage with chronological train/calibration/test seasons, sequential Elo, rolling form, and temperature scaling
  • Ships versioned model artifacts, reproducible Python pipelines, automated contract checks, architecture/API documentation, and GitHub Actions CI

A durable TypeScript job scheduler built with Fastify and PostgreSQL.

  • Coordinates concurrent workers with row-level locking and FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED
  • Recovers from transient failures with bounded exponential-backoff retries and worker leases
  • Exposes validated REST APIs, health checks, structured logs, and Prometheus-compatible metrics
  • Includes automated tests, coverage thresholds, Docker packaging, architecture decisions, and GitHub Actions CI
  • Runs in production on Vercel with Neon PostgreSQL

A preference-driven Berkeley course scheduling engine built with strict TypeScript and React.

  • Generates and ranks schedules using deterministic scoring and explicit user priorities
  • Detects course conflicts and produces explainable alternatives
  • Separates scheduling logic from the interface through typed domain boundaries
  • Includes unit, desktop/mobile end-to-end, persistence, and accessibility testing
  • Documents architecture, technical decisions, setup, and trade-offs

Open-source contribution

fastify/otel pull request #190 · Under maintainer review

Added configurable suppression of OpenTelemetry handler spans to Fastify's instrumentation library.

  • Extended the instrumentation policy, public TypeScript types, and documentation
  • Added regression coverage for Fastify v4 and v5
  • Verified 67 tests per supported Fastify version with 100% local coverage
  • Submitted one focused, DCO-signed commit linked to issue #180

Engineering approach

I favor small reviewable changes, automated quality gates, explicit database invariants, observable production behavior, and documentation that explains why a design was chosen—not only how it works.
