@-mentioning a file puts a chip in the composer, but there's no way to actually look at the file without sending the message first. Checking you referenced the right thing means sending, clicking the chip in the rendered message, and coming back.
The chip could open the file in the right panel on click, which is where a file link in a message already opens it.
