[Feature Request]: Visual Workflow Debugger (Wire Breakpoints, Step Controls, Variable Inspector) #447

Description

@herophil322

Is there an existing feature request for this?

  • I have searched the existing issues

What is your feature request?

Summary:

Suspend Job, Replay Previous Jobs and Test Selection each help with parts of workflow debugging,
but none let you pause mid-flow at an arbitrary point and inspect live data without pre-wiring
a Suspend node in a convenient way. I'd like to propose a first-class Interactive Workflow Debugger: breakpoints on
wires, simple step controls, and a live variable/JSON inspector, similar to an IDE debugger.

  1. Breakpoints on Wires

    • Click a wire/solder point in the Workflow Editor to toggle a breakpoint (e.g. red dot).
    • In "Debug Mode", execution pauses right before the downstream node runs when a token
      crosses a breakpointed wire.
  2. Step Controls

    • Next: run until the next breakpoint (or end, if none remain).
    • Continue: clear all breakpoints for this run and finish normally.
    • Abort: end the debug session immediately.
  3. Variable & Context Inspector

    • Side panel showing live state while paused: prev (data), workflowData, workflow.params,
      job metadata etc.
    • Search/filter bar for large JSON payloads.
    • Watch expressions to pin specific keys (e.g. workflowData.xxx) and see how
they change as execution steps forward.
    • Live Edit: Allow editing a pinned value directly in the inspector while paused, so the
modified value is picked up by the downstream node on Next/Continue, useful for testing
edge cases or fixing a bad value on the fly without restarting the whole workflow.

I have no visibility into the implementation effort or how deeply this would touch core
workflow-engine concepts, but I believe it would meaningfully improve the usability of the
Workflow Editor overall. Thanks for reading this far, it would be awesome to see something like this considered
for a future release :D.
