Support for Positron on Windows arm64 platforms is currently experimental; note that these builds do not include Quarto and require an arm64 version of Python.

Release Notes

Explore your Console history πŸ“œ

Positron has a new History Pane, similar to RStudio's. Your Console inputs are tracked by language and grouped by time period. You can search your history, send entries to the Console or an editor, and clear individual entries (handy if you accidentally entered a secret) or the entire history. Find the History pane on the right in the secondary side bar by default, or run History: Focus on History View from the command palette.

Positron Assistant πŸ€–

Positron Assistant, available as a preview feature, is now more powerful and reliable:

  • Assistant has switched to using a native implementation of the Copilot completion engine, addressing a variety of authentication and performance issues. Copilot credentials now also work in Remote SSH sessions, and VS Code proxy settings are respected when connecting to GitHub Copilot.
  • Assistant's tools, such as for editing files, installing packages, and getting directory structure, have been refined.
  • You can now create custom agent files for your projects. Read more at https://positron.posit.co/assistant-chat-agents.

Try experimental Dev Container support 🐳

Positron now has early, experimental support for Dev Containers. You can build or rebuild a container and open your workspace inside it. To try it out, enable the dev.containers.enable setting. Note that this early version has some limitations; only single-container configurations are supported (no Docker Compose), and musl-based Linux distributions like Alpine are not yet supported.

Let us know how it goes with our new Dev Container support!

Patch notes

The 2025.12.2 patch release addresses this issue, contributing defaults for the Pyright extension to improve the Python editing experience.

The 2025.12.1 patch release addresses this issue, deduplicating Python completions and fixing some situations where Python hover popups and function signature help popups wouldn't appear.

Release highlights

Try our new Python language server options 🐍

Our new release provides both a better default experience for editing Python code, as well as more flexibility for folks who want more control. We changed our Python language server approach so you can install your own extension of choice to provide syntax highlighting and other language server features; we've tested out basedpyright, ty, Pyrefly, and ZubanLS and expect all to work in Positron now. One of our goals is to provide a great "batteries included" experience for all users (including those who aren't sure which to choose) so, starting with this release, we now bundle the Pyrefly extension.

We no longer bundle the Pyright extension because its functionality overlaps with Pyrefly. If you do not want to use Pyrefly, disable that extension. You also will want to uninstall the Python Environments extension if you have it, because its features do not work in Positron.

Let us know how it goes with our new Python language server support!

Positron Assistant πŸ€–

This release brings several improvements to make Assistant more reliable and easier to troubleshoot. Two new commands help you manage your Assistant configuration:

  • Positron Assistant: Reset State lets you start totally fresh when needed.
  • Positron Assistant: Collect Diagnostics generates a diagnostics report to help identify issues.

We have also improved token efficiency across many tools and introduced preview support for Snowflake Cortex as a language model provider.

Run your code with new keyboard shortcuts πŸ’₯

The most upvoted feature in this month's release is a new set of keyboard shortcuts for running code from your document beginning to the current line Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+Home and from the current line to your document end Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+End. If you opt in the RStudio Keymap, these are available as Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+B and Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+E.

Release Notes

Windows ARM builds πŸͺŸ

This release marks our first support for Positron on Windows ARM. Currently, support for Positron on Windows arm64 platforms is experimental.

  • As of this release, only the arm64 version of Python works with this arm64 build of Positron. You'll see errors if you attempt to use the x64 version of Python. See this issue for details: #10426
  • You can use either the aarch64 version of R or x64 version of R. Note that if you use the aarch64 version of R, you will have increased performance but won't be able to install most packages since CRAN does not yet publish binaries for aarch64. If you use aarch64 R, install the RTools for 64-bit ARM so packages can be compiled locally.
  • Positron does not bundle Quarto because Quarto itself does not have a native Windows ARM64 build. If Quarto is essential to your workflow, you may have success installing the x64 version of Quarto, which will run under emulation.

Release Notes

Remote sessions πŸš€

This release brings a slew of improvements to the remote SSH experience in Positron. We've improved:

  • our UI treatment of configured hosts
  • the command to connect to your remote machine(s)
  • bundling of components such as Quarto
  • what happens when something goes wrong with the server download on your remote machine
  • how you can manage the installation location of Positron server

Additionally, the most upvoted feature in this month's release is native support for remote sessions on WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux). You can now connect to WSL distributions as remote sessions in Positron, giving you a seamless development experience when working with Linux-based environments on Windows. If you previously used the community-maintained extension for WSL support, you will want to uninstall that extension and transition to the built-in functionality.

Positron Assistant πŸ€–

Our new release adds initial preview support for using Positron Assistant with models provided by Amazon Bedrock, in addition to the existing Anthropic and GitHub Copilot model providers and the experimental OpenAI and OpenAI-compatible model providers.

Positron Pro sessions on Posit Workbench benefit from a smoother authentication experience with Workbench-managed AWS Credentials. Positron Desktop users can get started with Bedrock models by manually authenticating via the AWS CLI.

We'll continue to improve the Bedrock experience in Positron, particularly around authentication. Stay tuned for updates in future releases!

Customize your plots display πŸ“Š

One of the most upvoted features in this month's release is a new setting to customize the default sizing policy for the Plots pane, giving you more control over how your visualizations are displayed. Use the new plots.defaultSizingPolicy setting to configure how your plots are displayed by default if, for example, you prefer to always start with the "fill" option instead of the "auto" option. You can still change the sizing policy via the UI for plots after they are created, but this setting lets you set your preferred default behavior.

Patch Notes

The 2025.10.1 patch release addresses this issue.

Release Highlights

New features in the Data Explorer 🌟

We've introduced new features to help focus on key columns and navigate larger datasets during exploratory analysis.

Pin important columns or rows to keep them visible while scrolling through large datasets. When a column is pinned in the data grid, its corresponding row in the Summary Panel gets pinned as well, maintaining consistency across views.

Sort and filter rows in the Summary Panel to quickly view summary statistics for specific columns. Sort alphabetically by name or group by data type. Filter by column name to narrow down the list and focus on the columns most relevant to your current analysis.

GitHub Copilot Chat in Positron Assistant πŸ€–

Positron Assistant now supports GitHub Copilot for both completions and chat.

When you have GitHub Copilot added as a model provider, GitHub Copilot models, chat participants, and tools are now available in the chat pane and inline chat, in addition to inline code completions.

We're continuing to expand our support for additional language model providers, with support for custom providers in progress.

Manage Positron Assistant completions βš™οΈ

Completions from an LLM such as GitHub Copilot can be super useful, but sometimes they can be distracting or interfere with other completions from the Python or R LSP. You now have more control over when you see Positron Assistant completions:

  • Snooze these completions temporarily from the Assistant status bar popup.
  • Disable completions for the current file type (or all files) from the same status bar popup.
  • Use the new Positron Assistant: Toggle (Enable/Disable) Completions command to toggle these completions.

Release Notes

Positron Assistant πŸ€–

Positron Assistant, currently available as a preview feature, is now more powerful and versatile. New slash commands (/fix, /explain, and /doc) are available to debug, understand, and document code. These commands can even be triggered automatically; for example, you can convert a chat into a Quarto document just by asking, "Can you convert this to Quarto?", even if you don't specify the /exportQuarto command as part of your message.

"Fix" and "Explain" support for Console errors has also been introduced. With a single click, the Assistant can fix or explain an error, acting as a coding partner for troubleshooting. You can try it out by enabling the positron.assistant.consoleActions.enable setting.

Ways you already use Assistant have been enhanced. Code completions and inline chat are now available in notebooks, giving you access to the features you love no matter where you code. Assistant now also integrates with Git by default, letting you seamlessly chat about your project's history and providing suggestions when writing commit messages. Assistant can also now use the data summary tool for R objects, similar to what you have already been able to do in Python.

Convert your Data Explorer filters to code πŸ’₯

The Data Explorer now provides a Convert to Code button to make your analysis more reproducible. With one click, you can copy code to your clipboard that reflects the filters and sorts you have set up via the Data Explorer UI. Paste the code into the Console, a script, or a notebook to continue your data exploration with runnable, reproducible code. This feature currently supports both pandas and polars Python dataframes, with additional backends coming soon!

DuckDB for Python πŸ¦†

The Connections Pane now supports managing and exploring native DuckDB connections in Python, as has already been possible for R. Connect to local or remote DuckDB databases, explore their schemas, and interactively preview your DuckDB tables.

Positron Assistant πŸ€–

Positron Assistant, our AI client currently in preview, has received several updates in this release. We have made changes to reduce token usage, added an experimental git integration, and added new tools that the Assistant can use (for example, to create documents, view documentation, or to get info on your rectangular data). You can also now control Assistant's access to data in your Python and R sessions. If you have a problem with the Assistant that you want to report, use the commands that begin Positron Assistant: Export the current chat to export your logs.

New keybinding ⌨️

The most upvoted feature request in this release is a new keybinding to execute the current statement in your Python or R Console without advancing to the next one. You can now use Alt+Enter to execute your current statement without moving the cursor. (The existing keybinding Ctrl/Cmd+Enter executes the current statement and does advance your cursor.)

Diagnostics and outlines for R 😌

Our engine for providing R diagnostics has undergone a major upgrade! You'll notice that you no longer get overwhelmed with squiggles in your R code when you open a fresh session. Outlines in .R files have also been improved, especially for R6 methods and targets pipelines.

Release Notes

Positron is out of beta! ❀️

Stable releases of Positron are now available! Thank you to all our beta users who have been testing and giving feedback on our prereleases over the last year.

Daily builds πŸͺ©

For users who are interested in trying out new features at a faster cadence, we now provide a channel of daily builds; you can opt in to these builds by changing the update.positron.channel setting to "dailies".

Migrating to Positron πŸ’«

Our revamped Welcome page now includes two migration walkthroughs for users coming to Positron from other code editors and IDEs:

  • One walkthrough shows users coming from VS Code what is different about the Positron UI, how to manage Python interpreters and Python-specific settings, and what to know about extensions in Positron.
  • The other walkthrough shows users coming from RStudio how to navigate the UI, use familiar keyboard shortcuts, think about folders and workspaces, and configure formatting settings.

Bring up the Welcome page with the command Help: Welcome.

Positron Assistant πŸ€–

Positron Assistant, an AI client that provides LLM integration within Positron, is available in preview this release! Positron Assistant supports Chat via Anthropic as well as GitHub Copilot for inline completions. Use Positron Assistant to generate or refactor code, ask questions, get help with debugging, and get suggestions for the next steps in your data science projects. Compared to other IDE AI tooling, Positron Assistant offers novel data science and Positron-specific context. We have built out key integration points that allow the LLM to parse and interact with the current state of the Positron IDE, and will continue to expand these capabilities over time.

A few examples of these integration points include Positron’s:

  • Variables pane, providing names, dimensions, and column names of dataframes and Python/R based database connections, as well as metadata for arrays, lists, and other objects in memory
  • Plots pane for describing the current plot or suggesting variations and next steps for iterating on the current plot
  • Console, available to the model for viewing inputs and code outputs, as well as allowing the user or an AI agent to execute code in the console and view the output
  • Session state, providing what language is active in the console session (R or Python, including version), what packages are loaded, and what packages are installed

All of that Positron-specific context is in addition to the core capabilities of what traditional software-oriented GenAI clients have (active files, selected lines of code, files in project, training data in the model, etc).

For more information please see the Positron Assistant section of the user guide.
