WalkthroughPinStore distinguishes absent, readable, and unreadable PIN records and applies restrictions to unreadable security data. The unlock screen offers authorized removal and handles removal outcomes. Instrumentation tests cover storage, screen behavior, and relay unreadable-state diagnostics. ChangesUnreadable PIN recovery

- Around line 99-103: Update `PinStore.pinRecord()` to return `UNREADABLE` when
any unlock-critical value is unreadable: the PIN hash, PIN salt, or lockout
start time. Preserve `NOT_SET` when the PIN is absent or disabled, and return
`SET` only when the enabled PIN’s required values are readable. Add a
`PinStoreUnreadableTest` case that corrupts only the PIN hash and verifies
`UNREADABLE` and successful `clearPin()`.

181-195: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy liftAdd a test for the MainActivity PIN-removal authorization binding.
For a secure device,
MainActivitycallsauthenticateStrongOrDeviceCredentialand permits removal only when it returns a non-null authentication type.PinUnlockScreenUnreadableTestreplacesauthorizePinRemovalwith a lambda, andBiometricHelperInstrumentedTesttests a separately constructed helper. Neither reaches theMainActivitycallback.MainActivityLaunchTestonly checks startup. Add a boundary test that drives failed authentication and asserts thatclearPin()is not reached, plus successful strong-biometric and device-credential cases. The current production path is not shown to bypass authentication; this test prevents a future binding regression from weakening the deletion gate unnoticed.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

… read resumes on the main thread
PinStoreread every value through the ordinarySharedPreferencesgetters, which answer the caller's default both when nothing is stored and when a stored value will not decrypt. Every value in this file carries a restriction, and for each of them the default is the permissive answer. A PIN record that would not decrypt therefore read as no PIN set, no lockout, no attempts used, the bottom of the escalation ladder, and no biometric reset owed. The PIN gates at
MainActivity,Nip55ActivityandNip55ContentProviderall ask throughrequiresAuthentication(), so the first of those answers stopped all three asking at once, without anything raising or being logged. The rest removed the brute-force throttle: if one value is damaged while the hash is intact, the hash can be guessed without a lockout. The fix
PinStorenow reads throughReadablePrefs, which reportsFound,AbsentorUnreadable. Each of the 18 reads names both the absent answer and the unreadable answer at the call site, because the bug was that they were the same answer. The unreadable answer always keeps the restriction in force:PinRecordstate ofNOT_SET,SETorUNREADABLEThe session timeout is the one value that answers its default rather than its strictest option. Nothing in the app sets it and neither
setPinnordisablePinwrites it, so a value that cannot be read could never be rewritten, and0would have invalidated every session for good and refused all background signing while a PIN is set. The default is what every install runs with, so it lifts nothing below that, and a whole-file fault does not depend on it: the session timestamps then read as0, which already invalidates the session. One level read keeps
0deliberately: inclearFailedAttemptsAndResetEpochit only decides whether to stamp the decay clock, and not stamping is the stricter outcome. A comment there says so.The way out
Failing closed on its own would lock the person out of the app. The hash is in the same file, so no PIN can verify against an unreadable record, and waiting does not make it readable.
PinStore.clearPin()deletes the whole record, and the unlock screen offers it in a new state shown ahead of the lockout and biometric-reset states, since those both report their strictest answer and offer no exit.Removal is the only way in from that state. A biometric unlock that left the record alone looks gentler but cannot hold: the activity re-derives the unlock from the session on every resume, the session cannot be refreshed against a file that will not decrypt, and dismissing the prompt resumes the activity, so the lock screen would come straight back. Making it hold would mean overriding the session check on resume, which is a hole in the relock rather than a feature.
Removal is guarded three ways:
clearPin(), not a comment, because the call is reachable from the one screen shown to someone who has not authenticated.KeyguardManagerrefuses instead of counting as insecure, and a missing helper on a secure device refuses. The decision is made inMainActivityagainst the platform, and the screen's parameter has no default, so a caller cannot get removal without deciding how it is gated.A record is SET only when a PIN can actually be verified, which takes a readable hash and salt. A flag saying a PIN is set beside a hash that will not decrypt, or that is missing, is UNREADABLE, as is a flag that cannot be read with no usable hash beside it. The flag alone left three cases wrong: a set flag beside an unreadable or missing hash read as SET, so every PIN was refused as incorrect and removal was never offered, while a broken flag beside a usable hash would have offered to delete a PIN that could still verify.
disablePinremoves the hash and salt, so a usable pair means a PIN was set and never disabled. The hash and salt are read only when the flag leaves the answer open, so a store with no PIN costs one Keystore decrypt, and
requiresAuthentication()classifies the record once rather than twice. It runs on the background provider path, which any installed app can drive ahead of the rate limit, and reading three values instead of one there would otherwise have roughly doubled the Keystore work per query. It clears the file rather than the keys. When the file's own HMAC key is what will not decrypt, removing a single key has to resolve its name through that key and raises instead of answering, while a clear resolves no names and takes the damaged key material with it.
verifyPinalso stops spending the attempt budget on an unreadable record, since that would drive the lockout for a fault that is not a wrong PIN.Verification
PinStoreUnreadableTeststages both shapes a lost Keystore alias produces, a single value that will not decrypt and the file's HMAC key broken. It asserts the gate keeps asking, the throttle stays in force, a lockout with an unreadable start counts down and ends, an unreadable hash beside a readable flag is UNREADABLE, a broken flag beside a usable hash is SET and still verifies, an unreadable session timeout still lets a session open, the clear repairs the record and a new PIN can then be set, and the clear refuses a readable PIN and an absent one. Control cases assert a readable PIN still enables and verifies and an empty store still does not ask.PinUnlockScreenUnreadableTestcovers the screen: the fault is reported instead of the lockout state, a readable PIN offers no removal, removal clears and unlocks, a refused authorization leaves the record alone, no biometric unlock is offered in this state even with a biometric available, a single damaged value reaches the same state as a damaged file, and a record that recovers before the tap returns to PIN entry instead of leaving a button that refuses forever.PinStoreUnreadableTestalso covers a set flag with no hash at all reading as UNREADABLE, with the clear repairing it.isPinEnabled()to the collapsing read and dropping the refusal inclearPin()fails four tests, including "an unreadable flag must not read as no PIN" and "a readable PIN must not be removable this way"; the reverted getter also raisesAEADBadTagExceptionon the whole-file fault, so the old read could throw out of every gate. Reverting to flag-only classification and to a0timeout fails exactly the three tests for those cases. The lockout re-anchor test failed against the earlier substitute-number version with two reads 200ms apart both returning3599999.Not covered by a test: the second read through a fresh instance in
clearPin(), since staging a fault that fails one Keystore round trip and passes the next needs injection the store does not offer; and the biometric-or-credential prompt, which needs a real system prompt. Also in this change, test-only: the whitelist screen test added in #558 waited at most 5 seconds for its unreadable state, and on the CI emulator that wait timed out in two tests while passing in a third within the same run. The state appears only after a Keystore decrypt fails off the main thread, which takes about 1 second locally and about 2 on CI, with a tail past 5. Both screen tests now wait up to 15 seconds.
waitUntilreturns as soon as the condition holds, so this costs nothing on a pass, and a screen that never reaches the state still fails.Summary by CodeRabbit
