Revoking a NIP-46 client did not keep it out. The connect secret in the bunker URL is reusable, and a connect that presents it is accepted without a prompt, so a revoked client that kept the URL could connect again under a fresh key. Anything the core auto-approves for that connection is signed without reaching the app's denylist, which only runs when the core asks for approval.

Changes

  • Every revoke rotates the bunker URL. Single revoke, Revoke All, and Disconnect on a NIP-46 client in App Permissions now rotate the bunker credentials after revoking. Rotation works whether or not the bunker service is running; when a service is serving, it rotates and restarts through the service, and a service that started during a standalone rotation is rotated again so it cannot keep the old keys.
  • Disconnect in App Permissions now revokes in the engine. It removed the client from the app's lists but left the engine's grants, so the client's remembered kinds kept signing. Its denylist and config writes no longer fail silently.
  • Clients revoked before this version lose the URL too. On the first bunker start after upgrading, if any client was ever revoked, the bunker URL is rotated once, and the activity log says so. Clients then pair again with the new URL.
  • Every bunker start revokes denylisted clients in the engine before publishing its URL. A revoke made while the engine was stopped or still starting could not drop the client's persisted grants, and the start restored them.
  • A sign prompt answered after its client was revoked is refused. Connect prompts are exempt, since approving a connect is how a revoked client is let back in.
  • Revoke and rotate cannot be cut short by leaving the screen, which could leave a client revoked with the old URL still valid and no message.
  • Rotate Bunker URL is offered while the bunker is stopped, so a failed rotation can always be retried.
  • Revoking a single client now asks for confirmation, since every other client has to pair again with the new URL. The revoke copy says so, and that a revoked client stays blocked until a new connection from it is approved.
  • All three revoke paths go through one function, BunkerService.revokeClients. Revoke All takes its set from the saved config and the service's authorized and in-flight clients rather than the screen's copy, every path removes the client's stored entry, and a connect still being saved can no longer undo a revoke that lands meanwhile.

Stopgaps

Under the app's Rust multi-platform split, revocation is core policy. This change keeps it in the app only until the core owns it, and each piece is marked with what replaces it: the start-time revoke of denylisted clients and the second rotation go once the core clears persisted grants on a revoke with no running bunker; the check after an approval prompt goes once the core re-checks the client's permission there; and the denylist, the one-time upgrade rotation and rotating on every revoke go once the core records revocations itself and invalidates only the connect secret.

Tests

  • RevokedClientSetTest covers the set a single revoke and Revoke All act on.
  • BunkerRevokeE2ETest drives every revoke path end to end: the real bunker service on a public relay, the real Bunker and App Permissions screens, and a real NIP-46 client on the host (testharness/nip46probe). It checks that a client's remembered grant signs after a plain restart, and is refused after a revoke made while the bunker was stopped; that after each revoke path, Revoke All included, the old URL no longer connects while the new one does over the same relay and the client's stored entry is gone; and that a prompt approved after its client was revoked does not sign. Removing the start sweep, the prompt re-check, or the rotation on a single revoke each makes it fail on the matching check. It is manual-only (testharness/nip46probe/run-revoke-e2e.sh), restores the device's accounts and bunker settings afterwards, and recovers them on the next run if a run is killed.
  • BunkerRevokeRotationTest (manual, uses a public relay like the FROST tests) starts a real bunker, checks that a restart alone keeps the URL, rotates with the service stopped, and checks that the connect secret and bunker key both change. With the standalone rotation removed it fails on the secret check. It also checks that an earlier revoke rotates the URL exactly once, and that nothing rotates when no client was ever revoked.
  • Full instrumented suite on an API 33 emulator: all tests pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added confirmation prompts when revoking individual bunker clients.
    • Bunker credentials can now be rotated while the bunker is running or stopped.
    • Revoking a client or all clients invalidates the previous bunker URL and requires affected clients to pair again.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Revoked clients can no longer regain access through pending approvals or saved permissions.
    • Improved reliability for client revocation and app-permission disconnection.
  • Documentation

    • Added instructions for running end-to-end bunker revocation checks.

Walkthrough

Bunker client revocation now updates authorization state, denylisting, and bunker credentials. Service lifecycle handling covers stopped services and earlier revocations. Android and host-side tests exercise UI, relay, recovery, and signing rejection paths.

The service centralizes client revocation, credential rotation, lifecycle coordination, startup denylist handling, and denylisted-request rejection. Tests cover client selection and rotation behavior.

The screens route revocation and rotation through protected service operations. Individual revocation requires confirmation. Messages describe URL changes and required re-pairing.
Android and host-side revocation validation

Manual Android tests exercise revocation through Compose screens and a real relay. The host probe sends NIP-46 requests, and the shell harness coordinates request files with instrumentation. The tests include state recovery, cleanup, and signing rejection checks.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 69fec

Revoking a bunker client now changes the bunker URL so the old connect secret cannot be reused. In one failure case, if the engine-side revoke throws, the URL is not rotated. The revoked client is still blocked, but someone holding the old URL could pair again as a new client, and the user can no longer retry from the client list. The likely impact is narrow and the fix is small. Moving the rotation into a finally block before merge is recommended.

A rabbit saw the bunker turn,
Old keys faded, new keys burn.
Revoked hops met a closed-up door,
Probes found no signing path anymore.
Tests ran safely, state restored,
And fresh credentials were hoarded.
