Follow-up to #11, from a security review of the payment paths.

Ambiguous payments are no longer reported as failed. Any error after the pay request was sent (timeout, reset connection, 5xx, an oversized or unreadable body) used to come back as PAYMENT_FAILED, although the payment may have gone through, which invites the client to pay again. Puck now reads the payment hash from the invoice before paying (new src/bolt11.zig, checksum-verified, BOLT 11 test vectors) and:

  • reports success only with a preimage whose SHA-256 matches that hash (a success from LNbits without one is resolved by lookup, and ends as unknown if none verifies);
  • reports PAYMENT_FAILED only when LNbits definitively says the payment failed or could not be reached, and even then checks the payment by hash once first; a failed row that predates this attempt (its updated_at unchanged from a lookup taken before paying) is not taken as this attempt's failure;
  • otherwise looks the payment up by hash with backoff, and if it is still unresolved replies INTERNAL with "Payment status unknown, it may still complete; check lookup_invoice before retrying" (NIP-47 has no pending code).

Deadlines. Every LNbits call is raced against a timer (30 s for pay, 10 s otherwise); a pay timeout is treated as ambiguous, not failed. Responses up to 64 KiB are read in full instead of failing at 4 KiB.

Also:

  • lookup_invoice always reported pending; it now maps paid, failed and pending correctly.
  • Requests created before process start (minus 60 s) are rejected, closing a replay window after a restart.
  • An unknown encryption tag gets UNSUPPORTED_ENCRYPTION, as NIP-47 requires, instead of being dropped.
  • The config buffer, stored secrets, key copies and decrypted plaintext are wiped; credentials in logged URLs are hidden.
  • TCP keepalive on the relay socket, so a half-open connection reconnects (about 90 s on Linux).
  • Free text copied into replies (failure reasons, memos) is clipped so a reply always fits; it used to fail to send at all.

Tested live against a local relay and an LNbits stand-in on Zig 0.16 and 0.17: success, definite failure, 5xx and connection reset after paying, a hanging pay, pending forever, a 40 KB response, failure then paid, and 5xx then failed all got the expected reply, and the stand-in saw exactly one pay attempt each. So did an old failed row followed by a 502 then paid, a success with no or a wrong preimage, a rejection whose lookups fail, and 20 KB failure details and memos (the previous code got 7 of these wrong). Not tested against a real LNbits instance.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Requests using unsupported encryption now receive a clear error response.
    • Payment requests now distinguish confirmed payments, failures, and unknown outcomes.
  • Improvements
    • Invoice amounts are checked before payment, and uncertain payment outcomes are checked against payment records.
    • Replayed requests are filtered using in-memory tracking and a startup time window.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on payment outcomes, retry checks, request timing, and relay reconnection behavior.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The changes update request admission and encryption handling, add BOLT-11 payment-hash validation, and revise LNbits payment processing to return paid, failed, or unknown outcomes. They also bound response data, clear sensitive buffers, redact URL userinfo in startup logs, and enable relay TCP keepalive.

Changes

Request Admission and Encryption

Layer / File(s) Summary
Replay cutoff and encryption responses
src/main.zig
Relay filters and request validation use a process-start cutoff. Unsupported encryption requests receive an error response encrypted with NIP-44 v2. Tests cover cutoff boundaries and existing request-validation cases.

Payment Validation and Outcomes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Invoice hash and payment detail parsing
src/bolt11.zig, src/lnbits.zig
BOLT-11 parsing validates invoice data and extracts a payment hash. LNbits payment details distinguish paid, failed, and pending states; parsed preimages are checked against the requested hash.
LNbits requests and payment lookups
src/lnbits.zig
LNbits requests use deadlines, bounded response bodies, and allocator-backed buffers. Payment lookups filter outgoing rows and parse payment details.
Classify and reconcile payment outcomes
src/lnbits.zig
Payment responses and lookup results are resolved against a pre-payment baseline. Tests cover response classification and payment-outcome resolution.
Request payment and lookup responses
src/main.zig, README.md
The request handler validates invoices, passes payment hashes to LNbits, maps payment outcomes, and bounds response data. The README documents payment outcomes, request replay handling, and call deadlines.

Sensitive Data Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Clear secrets and redact URL userinfo
src/config.zig, src/main.zig
Configuration buffers and copied signing keys are zeroed. Startup logs mask URL userinfo.

Relay TCP Keepalive

Layer / File(s) Summary
Enable keepalive after connection
src/relay.zig
Relay connections enable socket keepalive. Linux connections also set TCP keepalive timing and probe options.

Invoice descriptions are sent to LNbits without JSON escaping. A description containing a quote breaks invoice creation. A crafted description could turn the request into a payment that skips the payment safeguards. Lookups can also mislabel some failed incoming payments as outgoing. Fix the request body serialization before merging.

Serialize LNbits request bodies as JSON instead of formatting strings. Both request bodies insert caller-controlled strings with {s} and do not escape them. A " in the value can add keys to the body. Python json keeps the last duplicate key, so an injected out key overrides the intended one.

  • src/lnbits.zig#L133-L135: build the createInvoice body with std.json.Stringify.valueAlloc (or std.json.fmt). Today a memo with " or \ breaks make_invoice. A crafted memo can turn invoice creation into an outgoing payment that skips the pay path checks.
  • src/lnbits.zig#L149-L149: build the pay body the same way. bolt11.paymentHash accepts " in the human-readable part of a checksum-valid invoice, so the escaping cannot rely on the invoice validation.

Do not map a missing amount to an outgoing payment.

lookup_invoice calls lookupPayment directly. parsePaymentDetails accepts a response with no details.amount and leaves amount_msat null. In that case, a failed incoming payment can be reported as outgoing and .failed instead of .expired. The missing-amount filter in lookupOutgoing does not apply to this path.

🐛 Suggested fix
-            const incoming = if (details.amount_msat) |a| a > 0 else false;
