Add a CI Integration Coverage Job over a Synthetic Corpus - #1173
Phase 3 of the coverage plan tracked in #1171: a CI integration job that runs the Docker image's test commands under dotnet-coverage over a synthetic corpus, checks every file's process result, and uploads to Codecov under the integration flag.
What it does
.github/actions/integration-coverage builds the image from the checked-out tree (docker buildx build --load, single platform, since the smoke build pushes nothing), restores the pinned dotnet-coverage, runs RegressionTests/integration-test.sh, and uploads the Cobertura report best-effort.
RegressionTests/integration-test.sh generates the synthetic corpus in a throwaway container from the image with python3 added, adds the IETF Matroska test files at a pinned commit, and runs /Test/test.sh under coverage with Docker/PlexCleaner.coverage.json. It then runs RegressionTests/check_results.py against RegressionTests/synthetic/expected-results.json, so any change in a file's result, new name, Modified, State flags, or failed operation fails the job. check_results.py --write records an intended change.
test-pull-request.yml runs it on a new integration paths-filter entry (the release paths plus what only the integration run reads) and on dispatch, and the aggregator passes a skipped run. publish-release.yml runs it on github.sha, and publish needs it to succeed. codecov.yml carries integration forward across commits that skip it.
New synthetic builders: an MP4 container, an MP4 under an MKV name, an uppercase extension, an unwanted extension, cover art, legacy and undefined language tags, title-implied flags, true interlaced video, MPEG-2 and MP2 re-encode, SDR closed captions, an over-limit bitrate, and a missing Cues seek index.
The SDR clips switch from testsrc2 to testsrc. ffmpeg's idet reads small testsrc2 frames as interlaced (TFF 47, BFF 42, progressive 7 on the raw source), and the deinterlace re-encode then hid the paths the fixtures target, such as re-encode and the DTS repairs.
The results-file State split moves into corpus_common.state_flags, shared by the catalog, reduction, and result-check scripts.
WORKFLOW.md gains D1.7 and updates D1.1, D1.5, D4.9, the diagrams, 5A, and 5B (S17, S18). OPERATIONS.md, RegressionTests/README.md, and the 3.24 notes in README.md and HISTORY.md describe the run.
Why repo-local rather than a hub task: the hub validator's validate hook receives no CODECOV_TOKEN, and the hub release task cannot load an image for a later step.
Verification
Local image built from this branch, then RegressionTests/integration-test.sh run three times on it. All 27 outcomes matched each time (19 synthetic, 8 Matroska).
Coverage, ReportGenerator on project sources: the image run alone 63.2% line (52.2% before these builders), merged with the unit tests 78.1% line (75.2% before).
RegressionTests unittest suite (45 tests), ruff, mypy, shellcheck, shfmt, actionlint, markdownlint, cspell, editorconfig-checker, the prose gate, and the repo gate all pass locally.
integration-test.sh with no restored tool prints its dotnet tool restore remedy and exits 1.
Local review
Three recorded local-strict-review passes. Round 1 raised 7 findings and round 2 raised 1, all introduced and all fixed. The final pass over head 4a5ca2c raised none.
Notes
Code and workflow comments are added, so this carries the comments label.
Not yet run in CI: the first CI run of the job on this PR is its live test, including the Codecov flag upload.
Added automated integration checks that run the Docker image against synthetic media and compare each file’s processing results with expected outcomes.
Integration checks run for relevant pull requests and must pass before a release can be published. Coverage is also reported for integration runs.
Expanded synthetic test cases to cover additional media formats, metadata, and processing scenarios.
Documentation
Expanded guidance on synthetic test cases, running integration checks locally, reviewing results, and measuring coverage.
Phase 3 of the coverage plan: build the image from the tree under test,
run its test commands under dotnet-coverage over a generated synthetic
corpus plus the pinned Matroska test files, check every file's process
result against a committed expectation, and upload to Codecov under the
integration flag. Pull requests run it on application or integration
paths, and a publish waits for it.
New synthetic builders cover the container, cover art, language, title
flag, interlace, re-encode, SDR closed caption, bitrate, and seek index
paths. The SDR clips use testsrc, since idet reads small testsrc2 frames
as interlaced and the deinterlace re-encode hid the targeted paths.

Move the results-file State split into corpus_common, used by the catalog,
reduction, and result-check scripts alike. Report an unrestored
dotnet-coverage with its remedy, and fail the run when it writes no
coverage report. Correct the docs on which targets join the run, what the
check compares, and the language-tags fixture's tags.

check_results.py imports corpus_common.py, so a change to it alone could
break the result check without running the job that uses it.

The synthetic corpus adds media-processing and filename cases, with expected outcomes for 27 files. check_results.py compares per-file outcomes with expected JSON; tests cover parsing, comparison, and CLI behavior. Corpus tools use shared state parsing.
Image integration run and coverage RegressionTests/integration-test.sh, .github/actions/integration-coverage/action.yml, RegressionTests/README.md, OPERATIONS.md
The integration script generates media, runs the image test script under coverage, and checks results against expected JSON. The composite action sets up .NET, builds a local image, runs the script, and uploads coverage to Codecov.
CI and publishing gates .github/workflows/test-pull-request.yml, .github/workflows/publish-release.yml, WORKFLOW.md, HISTORY.md, README.md, OPERATIONS.md, codecov.yml
Pull request workflows run integration coverage on manual dispatch or matching path changes. The required-check job accepts success or skip. Publishing runs the integration job for publish plans and requires success. The documentation describes these rules, and the integration Codecov flag enables carryforward.

• Run Docker image test commands under coverage for relevant pull requests and releases.
• Compare every synthetic and pinned Matroska file outcome against committed expectations.
• Upload integration coverage to Codecov and document how to reproduce and update the run.
Keep the repo-local composite action: it shares the same integration procedure across PR and release workflows while allowing each to supply its Codecov token. Reusing the hub validator hook or smoke-build image was considered, but the hook lacks that token and the hub build does not leave a locally loadable image for this run.

1. Integration uploads can vanish silently 📎 Requirement gap◔ Observability
Description
The Codecov upload step is explicitly allowed to fail via continue-on-error and `fail_ci_if_error:
false`. A missing token, rejected report, or other upload error therefore leaves the integration job
green without proving that the integration flag appears on pull requests or main.
The changed action marks the Codecov action as continue-on-error and also sets `fail_ci_if_error:
false`, so upload failures are not surfaced as integration-job failures. The checklist requires the
integration flag to be separately visible and verified on pull requests and main.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The integration coverage upload is best-effort and can fail without affecting the job result, so the required `integration` Codecov flag is not verified.
## Fix Focus Areas
- .github/actions/integration-coverage/action.yml[35-43]
## Recommended Fix
Make the integration coverage upload fail the integration job when a report or token is expected, or add an explicit post-upload verification that confirms the `integration` flag was accepted for the tested commit while preserving the no-token behavior for fork pull requests.

The action builds the image with docker buildx build --pull from ubuntu:rolling, which installs
whatever FFmpeg, MKVToolNix, MediaInfo and HandBrake versions are current that day.
check_results.py then compares every file's exact State flags against expected-results.json
and fails on any difference. So a tool release that changes one fixture's outcome turns the required
check red on every pull request that touches an integration path, including PRs that never touched
processing code, until someone records the new result.
The Dockerfile's builder and final stages come from ubuntu:rolling and install tools from apt
without version pins. --pull refreshes that base on every run. integration-test.sh pins the
Matroska corpus commit "so the expected results do not move with the upstream repository", but the
tool versions that produce those results still float. The expected file records exact per-file State
sets, for example ScannedInterlace, ReEncoded and Repaired, and these depend on how the tools
detect things. S18 accepts this for publish, but the same drift also hits the PR gate.
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution
## Issue description
The integration job compares exact per-file results against a committed file. It runs against an image whose media tools float with `ubuntu:rolling`, so an upstream tool update can fail unrelated pull requests.
## Fix Focus Areas
- .github/actions/integration-coverage/action.yml[25-27]
- RegressionTests/README.md[170-183]
## Recommended Fix
Document in RegressionTests/README.md and WORKFLOW.md D1.7 that a tool refresh can change results on PRs, and say who re-records them and how. Also log the tool versions from Results.json `Versions.Tools` when the check fails, so a reviewer can tell tool drift apart from a code regression.

What changed in this PR
Adds a repository-local CI integration-coverage job that builds the Docker image, exercises it against synthetic and Matroska media, validates per-file outcomes, and uploads coverage under the integration Codecov flag.
Changes:
Adds synthetic media builders, expected-result comparison tooling, and shared state-flag parsing.
Integrates coverage execution into pull-request and release workflows.
Assert the container-mismatch warning for container-renamed.mkv in the integration run.
container-renamed.mkv reaches ReMuxed through the container check or through the structural repair fallback. The fallback remux sets the same State, Modified, Result, and NewFileName values. Each intervening step leaves these fields unchanged for this fixture. check_results.py compares only those fields. If container detection stops working, the integration run still passes. The fallback logs Matroska seek index unusable, while only the container check logs Non-Matroska container detected. Asserting that message for this file detects the loss.

Update the integration test that validates results from the
build_container_renamed fixture to also assert that the log reports
“Non-Matroska container detected” for container-renamed.mkv. Fail the
integration run when that warning is absent, while keeping the existing results
comparison intact.
Assert IETF language tags on the language-tags fixture output.
Assert IETF language tags on the language-tags fixture output.
build_language_tags creates an und audio track and disables IETF language tags. No input track has an IETF tag. The language-tags.mkv entry in expected-results.json records only the aggregate SetLanguage state. check_results.py compares only NewFileName, Result, Modified, State, and FailedOperation. integration-test.sh has no language assertion.
A change that stops writing IETF tags while still updating the legacy audio language can leave all compared fields unchanged. The integration check would then pass.
Add a per-track comparison of the output LanguageIetf values, and record the expected values in expected-results.json. Splitting the fixture alone adds no check, because the comparison still covers only the listed fields.

Update the language-tags fixture created by build_language_tags and its
integration-result checks so each output track’s LanguageIetf value is compared
against expected values recorded in expected-results.json. Extend
check_results.py to include this per-track comparison; do not rely on the
aggregate SetLanguage state or split the fixture without adding the comparison.
Assert the title-implied flags on each output track.
Assert the title-implied flags on each output track.
The title-flags.mkv expectation checks only the aggregate SetFlags state. check_results.py compares no per-track data. A run that writes the Commentary flag and omits the SDH or Forced flag still passes.
The fixture builds a Commentary audio track, an English SDH subtitle track, and a Forced subtitle track (synthesize.py:350-354). SetFlags is recorded after the write succeeds (ProcessFile.cs:725-733). A residual flag error only logs a warning and returns true (ProcessFile.cs:740-748).
Add a per-track flag assertion for this fixture. Either extend the result record with each track's flags, or read the processed output and compare each track's Commentary, SDH, and Forced flags with the title-implied values.

Add per-track flag assertions for the title-flags fixture created by the `run`
call in `synthesize.py`, verifying the Commentary audio track and English SDH
and Forced subtitle tracks each have their expected title-implied flags. Update
the relevant result-checking path to inspect each track rather than relying only
on aggregate `SetFlags` state, which can pass despite a missing track flag.
codecov.yml's flag and path-fix rules shape the integration upload, so a
change to it runs the job. The restored-tool check runs before the work
directory exists, so a failed check leaves nothing that blocks a rerun.
S1 now says the smoke build makes no artifact uploads, since the
integration job uploads coverage.

Integration uploads can vanish silently: declined. The upload is best-effort by design, the same as the hub validator's own .NET and Python uploads, which set continue-on-error: true and fail_ci_if_error: false in the pinned validate-task.yml. WORKFLOW.md D1.7 states it. A fork or Dependabot pull request has no CODECOV_TOKEN, so a failing upload would red every such pull request. The report itself is guarded: integration-test.sh fails the job when dotnet-coverage writes no report, so only the upload is best-effort. This pull request's first run shows the upload landing, and Codecov now lists the integration flag.
Upstream tool updates can block unrelated pull requests: declined. The maintainer chose to gate both pull requests and publishes on exact results, accepting that a tool update in ubuntu:rolling that changes a result turns the check red until someone records it with check_results.py --write, per RegressionTests/README.md "CI integration run". That red is the signal the gate exists to give, since the same tools ship in the next published image.
