Summary

Two corpus files were kept whole by the reduce gate, because no clip reproduced their full-mode catalog state. This change lets the gate keep a clip of each.

  • Renamed-MP4 tag cleanup. The artificial-container rung re-cuts a renamed MP4 with a stream copy, which drops the MP4 per-track names. PlexCleaner reads a non-flag track title as a tag, so the source reaches ClearedTags and the clip did not. The rung reads the names with the image's ffprobe and sets them as title, which the MP4 muxer writes back as the track name.

  • Copied subtitle defect after a snippet repair. The gate processes each clip with --testsnippets, so a repair re-encodes only the clip's first 30 seconds while verify reads all of it. A repair copies a corrupt PGS stream through, so a source ending RepairFailed needs the defect inside that snippet. locate_issue.py --write-rules now leads such a window by at most half the snippet, and keeps the full pad lead for a source that repairs clean.

  • Hand-tuned windows kept apart from located ones. locate --write-rules used to overwrite any region entry for a file it located, losing a hand-tuned window and its note. The rules file keeps hand-tuned windows in regions, which no tool writes, and locate writes only a new located map. A regions entry wins over a located one for the same file, and reduce says when it does. Existing rules files need no migration, since every entry already in regions stays hand-tuned.

The README "Region rules" section states how to choose a window's lead and how the two maps relate.

Refs #1175

Verification

Run through the gate in the ptr727/plexcleaner:develop image against the full-mode catalog, one source at a time:

Source Before After
Renamed MP4, tag cleanup kept whole, 2.4 GB, clip missed the Tags detection PASS (artificial-container), 51 MB
PGS defect, RepairFailed kept whole, 6 GB, clip ended Repaired PASS (region), 58 MB, with the window region_window writes
  • The track-name fix was checked with the image's mkvmerge: the re-cut clip's track names match the source's, where a plain stream copy has none.
  • Local strict review runs over every pushed head, and each recorded pass is attested in the PR conversation.
  • ruff check, ruff format --check, mypy, and the unittest suite pass. New tests cover mp4_track_names, the titles the re-cut passes, and region_window.

Not in this change

  • The live rules file lives with the media and is not in source control. Its entry for the PGS source was moved by hand to the 190-245 s window, with a dated backup beside it.
  • A third source stays whole: an MP4 carrying an EIA-608 caption track that FFmpeg's MP4 muxer cannot write, so no cut is made. It is 264 MB.

Local review findings, declined

  • RegressionTests/reduce_corpus.py load_regions, introduced: a rules file written before the split would carry locate-written windows in regions, which would then win over fresh located ones. Declined per GOVERNANCE.md "Trust Boundaries and Hardening Effort": the rules file is trusted maintainer data with one deployment, and its every regions entry is hand-tuned. None carries locate's decode signature at ~Ns note, and no other rules file exists, so no migration is owed.

The artificial-container rung cut a renamed MP4 with a stream copy, which drops the MP4 track names. PlexCleaner reads a track name as a tag, so the clip never reached the tag cleanup its source does. The rung reads the names with the image's ffprobe and sets them as titles.

The reduce gate processes a clip with --testsnippets, so its repair covers only the first 30 seconds. A copied subtitle defect must sit inside that snippet to end RepairFailed again. locate_issue.py leads a RepairFailed source's window by at most half the snippet.

A clean-repair source's window now leads by more than the snippet whatever the pad, as its docstring states. The docstring says why a RepairFailed lead is half the snippet. The track-name read drops a guard for output ffprobe does not produce.

Remediation recommended

1. Late defects still evade quick scans 📎 Requirement gap ≡ Correctness
Description
GetClosedCaptions limits probing to QuickScanFrameCount, while FindInterlacedTracks skips
detection when quick scanning is enabled, so defects appearing after the quick interval are treated
as absent. The new reduction guidance covers only --testsnippets, leaving quick-scan runs able to
miss late captions or interlacing that full-mode verification detects.
Code

RegressionTests/README.md[102]

+Reduce processes each clip with `--testsnippets`, so a repair re-encodes only the clip's first 30 seconds. A repair copies a subtitle defect through rather than fixing it. So a window for a source that ends `RepairFailed` starts less than 30 seconds before the defect, and the repaired snippet fails verify again. A window for a source that repairs clean starts more than 30 seconds before the defect, so the snippet stays clear of it. `locate_issue.py --write-rules` picks the lead from the catalog's state the same way.
Evidence
The changed documentation describes the reduction path only through --testsnippets. The existing
quick-scan implementation limits closed-caption probing to a fixed frame count and skips interlace
detection in quick mode, so a defect outside that interval can remain undetected even when full mode
finds it.

Other quick-mode limits do not mask failures

PlexCleaner/ProcessFile.cs[1383-1387]

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Quick-scan closed-caption and interlacing detection can inspect only an initial interval, allowing late defects found in full mode to be missed. The new reduction guidance discusses `--testsnippets` but does not identify or address these other quick-mode limits.
## Fix Focus Areas
- PlexCleaner/FfProbeTool.cs[218-230]
- PlexCleaner/ProcessFile.cs[1383-1387]
- RegressionTests/README.md[102-102]
## Recommended Fix
Either make the quick-scan paths preserve full-mode findings for late captions and interlacing, or explicitly document and handle these masking cases in the reduction audit so reduced-corpus verification cannot incorrectly report success.

What changed in this PR

This pull request improves reduced-corpus fidelity by preserving renamed MP4 track names and generating region windows that reproduce subtitle defects under snippet-limited repairs.

Changes:

  • Preserve MP4 per-track names during artificial-container clipping.
  • Adjust region-window leads based on RepairFailed outcomes and repair-snippet behavior.
  • Add unit tests and document region-window selection.
  • Follow-up is needed for UTF-8 decoding of ffprobe output and more actionable failure diagnostics.
File Summary

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Raise the clean-repair lead floor above the snippet by the keyframe spacing the cut must absorb.

157-158: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Raise the clean-repair lead floor above the snippet by the keyframe spacing the cut must absorb.

With --pad at or below 31, the clean-repair lead is exactly 31 s. mkvmerge --split parts splits only at key frames and can move the clip start forward to the next key frame. A forward move above 1 s puts the defect inside the first 30 s, the snippet that reduce repairs. A defect inside that snippet can make the repair fail. The clip state then differs from the source state, and the strict gate rejects the mkvmerge rung.

Set the clean-repair floor above SNIPPET_SECONDS by the largest keyframe interval the cut can absorb. Do not use a margin of 1 s. The keyframe spacing depends on each source, so choose a margin that covers the sources in the corpus. The test in RegressionTests/tests/test_locate_issue.py expects (174, 215) for pad 10. Update that expectation when the floor changes. The default --pad of 40 is not affected.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 85a01c06b426); the change keeps it reachable.

The clean-repair lead in the `repair_failed` branch needs a floor that keeps the
defect beyond the first snippet even when keyframe-aligned splitting moves the
clip start forward. Set the floor above `SNIPPET_SECONDS` by a margin
established to cover the largest keyframe interval in the corpus, and update the
regression expectation for `pad` 10 to match; preserve the existing behavior for
the default `pad` of 40.
Nitpick Add a main test for the RepairFailed lead selection.

211-211: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a main test for the RepairFailed lead selection.

RegressionTests/locate_issue.py:211 selects the window lead from the catalog state. The only test of this selection is test_region_window, which passes literal booleans to region_window. No test in RegressionTests/tests/test_locate_issue.py runs main()'s --full --write-rules branch. Changing line 211 to pass False for a RepairFailed entry would leave the suite passing.

Add one test. Patch full_decode_locate and the source and work paths. Supply a RepairFailed catalog entry, run main() with --full --write-rules, and assert the window written for that entry.

locate_issue.py --write-rules overwrote any region entry for a file it located, which threw away a hand-tuned window and its note. The rules file now keeps hand-tuned windows in "regions", which no tool writes, and the located ones in "located". A "regions" entry wins over a "located" one for the same file, and reduce says so.

The README also states that a defect less than the lead into the file starts its window at 0.

Late defects still evade quick scans: GetClosedCaptions limits probing to QuickScanFrameCount, while FindInterlacedTracks skips detection when quick scanning is enabled.

Declined, outcome 2. Please dismiss finding 1, since it is not reachable from this change:

  • The reduce gate never passes --quickscan. process_clip in RegressionTests/reduce_corpus.py builds the PlexCleaner command with --testsnippets and no --quickscan, and every clip log the gate wrote opens on Process Options: TestSnippets: True, QuickScan: False. So the QuickScanFrameCount probe limit and the quick-scan interlace skip never run under the gate, and the README sentence covers the one limit that does.
  • Quick-mode equivalence with full mode is not a goal for the corpus. The maintainer decided that on Choose How Quick Runs Size the Repair Re-Encode #1182, a quick run is not expected to match a full run.

Verdict: The core claims rely on external corpus and Docker image FFmpeg/ffprobe/muxer behavior that this checkout cannot independently exercise, so maintainer confirmation is needed after the review findings are fixed.

Answered with evidence. The claims were exercised end to end on the host that holds the corpus, through the reduce gate in the ptr727/plexcleaner:develop image, as the PR description's Verification table records. The renamed-MP4 source passed as a 51 MB clip, and the PGS source as a 58 MB clip with the window region_window writes. The track-name round trip was read back with the image's mkvmerge, and the re-cut clip's names match the source's.
