I'm the lead developer of the Showbiz mod and we have a spotlight system that could use realistic lights, however I've been trying to set this up for the past 6 hours and I keep running into issues as there is no documentation on using IRL Core inside other mods.

I've looked at the BBS IRLights addon, but it seems awfully complicated and version-dependant considering all I want to do is spawn a light. It requires manually setting up shadow casting and setting up the entire rendering pipeline.

Is there some form of API I'm missing for more easily interfacing with IRLights? Perhaps something in irl-redactor?

There is no supported high-level spawnLight(...) API today. irl-core implements the registry, shared bake/upload pipeline, and patcher; IRLights owns the BBS/Iris hooks and configuration that drive them. IRL-editor/redactor is another full consumer of the core, not a simpler adapter (core pipeline, IRLights hook).

If IRLights is installed, is the sole runtime owner of the bundled core, and has already patched and enabled a compatible shaderpack, the narrow Java seam is LightRegistry.registerSpot(...). IRLights uses that same method for its own spotlights (reference call). An illustrative Showbiz wrapper is:

Those limits match the current IRLights spotlight form: intensity 0..20, range 0.1..128, cone angles 1..179, anisotropy -0.95..0.95, density 0.005..0.5, beam 0..50, and bulb size 0..2 (form source). If Showbiz exposes the last four settings, validate them to those ranges too.

That raw method is public Java surface, but it is not yet a documented compatibility-stable external API. In particular:

1. Register every active spotlight once per client render frame from a callback that runs even if its visible model is frustum-culled. Use only the main world render path on the client render thread, not UI/picking, an Iris shadow pass, or a core shadow-bake re-render. IRLights applies those guards itself (render guards). Registrations made after a flush are intentionally uploaded on the next frame (registry lifecycle).
2. Retain each Showbiz ID and never reuse it during the game process. The core uses the value for per-frame deduplication and shadow caches (ID contract, shadow-cache note).
3. Keep the validation at the boundary. The raw registry does not reject non-finite or out-of-range input. LightMath.cone converts full angles to half-angle cosines and enforces only inner <= outer; it does not impose physical angle limits (source).

The build/runtime contract is the part that is genuinely missing. At these commits, core is an MC-typed 1.20.4 artifact, published only to mavenLocal() as org.qualet:irl-core:1.1.3, then JiJ-bundled by IRLights; its metadata says it is not installed alone (core consumption, version, addon dependency, metadata). Do not blindly include("org.qualet:irl-core:...") in Showbiz while IRLights also bundles it. A provisional development setup would compile against the exact matching core as modCompileOnly and depend on the matching irlite release at runtime, but the maintainer should confirm the Minecraft/remapping pair before that becomes shipped integration guidance.

The smallest maintainable package feature would therefore be an IRLights-owned, validated registerSpot facade, a documented compile coordinate, and an exact IRLights/core version contract. The code above identifies the current internal seam and lifecycle, but I have not run a Showbiz/Minecraft integration.
