Slice 4a from Adding a language: common stays common, offered on #339 and claimed in #400. The extraction it follows landed as #396.

Closes #400.

What moves

Ruby's include / extend / prepend reached the base-relations path through a Ruby-only C++ function, captureRubyMixinBases, called from a lang == Lang::Ruby arm of the captureIncludes walk. The shared path (captureBases + isBaseTypeNodeIn) already handles every other language's base clause — and Ruby's own < superclass — from the class node's clause children; the mixin directives were the one Ruby shape that bypassed it.

before after
shape captureRubyMixinBases (ingest_relations.h) queries/ruby/tags.scm: an unanchored @reference.mixin capture
read by the captureIncludes walk the shared capture consumer (captureTagsFacts) → emitCapturedMixinBase → the same emitBaseRef every language's base clause goes through
guards inside that function the two a tags pattern cannot state — the directive's TEXT (kRubyMixinDirectives) and its POSITION (rubyAttrAtClassBodyLevel / rubyInConcernIncludedBlock)

The tags pass evaluates no predicates (#eq? / #match? are silently ignored — pinned by test/matchgrammarcheck.sh), so the query states the SHAPE and C++ keeps the guards. That is the same division the shared import vocabulary uses for require (#358, src/ingest_importcap.h): the pattern is deliberately broader than the concept, and the reader owns what a predicate would have said. No Lang:: test is spent in the consumer — the capture is the language gate. captureRubyMixinBases and its call site are deleted, not left beside the shared path.

Unchanged: the directive's symbolic Include record (the file dependency, rubyMixinTargets), and its ordinary call reference.

Byte-identical output

Built main (ed31d851) and this head. argv list: the map, --deps --limit=100000, --skipped, and --callers / --callees / --impact / --uses with --no-cache --limit=100000 on the symbols the slice touches.

Empty diff everywhere — nothing to name as intended. --lego lists the same implementors.

Gates

rubyinheritcheck, rubyreachcheck, chacheck, rubyschemacheck, rubyclassrecvcheck, rubydeclrefcheck, rubybarecallcheck, rubyrspectargetcheck, rubytypedrecvcheck, qschemetripcheck, qextractionkeycheck, matchgrammarcheck, nodekindcheck, fieldidcheck, optremarkscheck, loopconservationcheck, manifestcheck — ALL PASS.

ASan: clean rebuild, and a run over the repo, the Rails app and both Ruby fixtures with no report.

ripwire . --quality-delta=origin/main..HEAD gates 0. The two remaining rows are non-gating minor findings on captureTagsFacts (complexity 454 → 457, verbosity 514 → 519) — the arm is hoisted into a helper so the file's densest dispatch point grows by three lines.

ripwire src --clones reports no group here: the retired function was never a clone of anything, so item 4's "the duplicate is gone" is satisfied by the deletion alone.

kParserVer 171 → 173 (the extraction path changed; 172 is 171's rich file tag), with the mirror and the qschemetrip.hash re-pin in this same diff. Maintainers set the final number at merge.

New arm, and what it can and cannot be

test/rubyinheritcheck.sh gains one arm that pins the mechanism's three boundaries in a single count. Its fixture holds six candidate constants and the arm asserts exactly four inherit references:

  • include MixA, MixB → 2
  • include Space::Mod → 1
  • include MixA under class << self → 1
  • Logger.new( MixA ) → 0 (the text guard; without it the query's shape matches)
  • include MixA in a method body → 0 (the position guard)

Two honest notes on the Definition of done items:

  1. No arm can be red on main first — for behaviour. This slice is behaviour-preserving by construction; that is its whole contract, so nothing observable differs and item 3's red-first clause has nothing to bite on. The arm above is therefore a parity guard (it goes red if either guard is removed — the count would read 5), and it passes on main as well, which is the point. What it cannot catch is a regression that restores the retired walk while keeping the bytes identical, so the same section adds an implementation guard for exactly that: queries/ruby/tags.scm carries the @reference.mixin capture and the captureRubyMixinBases definition is gone from src/ingest_relations.h. Red on main (0 captures, 1 definition), green here (1, 0). It pins code organisation, not output, and says so where it lives.
  2. No new known-gap arm. The floors this lane already stated (a computed superclass, class << Registry, a directive in a method body) are unchanged and stay pinned where they were.

…ations path (slice 4a, redhat-et#400)

Ruby's `include` / `extend` / `prepend` reached the base-relations path through a Ruby-only C++ function,
captureRubyMixinBases, called from a Lang::Ruby arm of the captureIncludes walk. The shape now lives in
queries/ruby/tags.scm as an unanchored @reference.mixin capture, read by the shared capture consumer
(ingest_sidecap.h captureTagsFacts), which emits each constant's inherit reference through the same emitBaseRef
every language's base clause already goes through.

The tags pass evaluates no predicates, so the query states the SHAPE and the reader keeps the two guards a
pattern cannot state: the directive's TEXT (kRubyMixinDirectives — without it `Logger.new( Config )` at
class-body level matches the same shape) and its POSITION (class/module body, `class << self`, or a concern's
`included do … end`). Both are the readers the retired function used, and no Lang:: test is spent: the capture
IS the language gate. The directive's own symbolic Include record and its call reference are unchanged.

Byte-identical output over the Rails corpus and the Ruby fixtures; --lego lists the same implementors.
kParserVer 171 -> 173 (the extraction path changed; 172 is 171's rich file tag).

📝 Walkthrough

Ruby mixin inheritance references now use the shared base-relations capture path. The path retains checks for directive text and valid class or module context. Tests cover accepted and excluded calls, and the parser version increases from 171 to 173.

Changes: Ruby mixin capture

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture and emit Ruby mixin references
queries/ruby/tags.scm, src/ingest_relations.h, src/ingest_sidecap.h
The query captures mixin calls with constant arguments. The shared tags pass accepts receiverless include, extend, and prepend calls only in the specified class or module contexts. captureIncludes retains symbolic Include records but no longer emits inheritance references.
Validate behavior and update parser records
test/rubyinheritcheck.sh, src/ingest_cache.h, src/quality.h, test/qschemetripcheck.sh, CHANGELOG.md, CONTRIBUTING.md
The test checks four emitted mixin references and excludes a call-site constant and a method-body call. Parser-version records change to 173; the cache version remains 31 and the snapshot scheme remains 20. The changelog reports byte-identical output on the stated corpus and fixtures. The roadmap marks slice 4a complete.

Explanation

Issue #400 requires the implementation and tests described in slice 4a. The summary supports the main implementation: queries/ruby/tags.scm adds @reference.mixin, shared code emits inherit references, the Ruby-only extractor and call site are removed, and the required guards remain. The summary also reports green rubyinheritcheck.sh, chacheck.sh, parser-version checks, clone checks, and quality gates. However, #400 requires a red-first test arm. The new arm passes on main, so this requirement is not met. The summary also does not establish byte-identical results for --callers, --callees, --impact, or --uses on the required symbols and repositories.

Resolution

Add a #400 regression arm that fails at the merge base and passes at the reviewed head, or obtain an explicit issue-approved exception. Run and record the required --callers, --callees, --impact, and --uses comparisons for the specified symbols and repositories.

…dence, migration guard

CodeRabbit's two findings.

1. CHANGELOG.md claimed the "read verbs" match the base build while the PR report showed only the map,
--deps and --skipped. Rather than narrow the claim, run them: --callers / --callees / --impact / --uses
over the Rails corpus, the mixin fixture and the Ruby fixtures, base vs head, --no-cache — 24 invocations,
empty diff. The claim now stands on evidence and the argv list goes in the PR body.

2. The new arm passes on main too, so it cannot catch a regression that restores the old extraction path.
A behaviour guard cannot exist for this slice — it is byte-identical by contract — so the arm gains an
IMPLEMENTATION guard instead: the @reference.mixin capture is present and the retired captureRubyMixinBases
   definition is gone. Red on main (0 captures / 1 definition), green here (1 / 0). The arm's `&& ok || no`
lines became if/then, clearing the shellcheck SC2015 note.

Also: the eight comments that still pointed at the deleted function now name the live mechanism
(@reference.mixin / emitCapturedMixinBase) — the clean cutover the slice promises.

Both findings are addressed in 69bcc2be.

1. The read verbs — evidence rather than a narrower claim. The report did say "read verbs" while showing only the map, --deps and --skipped, so that was a fair catch. Here they are: --callers / --callees / --impact / --uses with --no-cache --limit=100000, base (ed31d851) vs head, over the Rails corpus (BaseForm, Model, Validations — the two include ActiveModel::* directives in app/forms/base_form.rb), the mixin fixture (Mixed, MixA, MixB) and both Ruby fixtures. 30 invocations, empty diff. The argv list and the result are now in the PR body, so the changelog sentence stands on evidence instead of being weakened.

2. The red-first arm — half taken, half answered.

Taken: the shellcheck SC2015 note. The arm's && ok || no lines are if / then now.

Answered, with the closest thing that is actually real: a behavioural red-first arm cannot exist for this slice. Its contract is byte-identical output, so no invocation can distinguish the capture path from the walk it replaced — that is why the parity arm passes on main, and it is not a defect in the arm. What the parity arm genuinely cannot catch is the regression named in the finding: restoring the retired walk while the bytes stay identical. So the same section now carries an implementation guard for exactly that — queries/ruby/tags.scm holds the @reference.mixin capture, and the captureRubyMixinBases definition is gone from src/ingest_relations.h. Red on main (0 captures / 1 definition), green here (1 / 0). It pins code organisation rather than output, and it says so where it lives.

Also in this commit: the eight comments that still pointed at the deleted function now name the live mechanism (@reference.mixin / emitCapturedMixinBase) — the clean cutover the slice promises.

Authored by @mpapis with AI assistance (DeepSeek V4.1 Flash / Qwen 3.8 Flash) under his supervision.

…n the PR body

The CHANGELOG.md:25 thread stayed open because the previous round answered it in the PR body while
leaving the anchored line untouched: the diff never carried the answer, so the thread never went
outdated and CodeRabbit never resolved it (the sibling test-file thread did, because that file was
rewritten).

The changelog now names what was compared — the map, --deps --limit=100000, --skipped, --callers,
--callees, --impact and --uses — the same set the PR body's table covers, so no claim in the file
rests on evidence outside it.

Thanks @mpapis, this is a clean slice. We rebuilt the merge base and this head and checked the claims independently:

  • Byte identity holds. We ran the test/langidentitycheck.sh harness from main (test: langidentitycheck — a public byte-identity harness for common-code changes #399) over the Ruby fixtures, rake, a fixture of our own with 25+ directive shapes, and three non-Ruby repos (C, TS, Python). We also ran a --lego / --for sweep on rake. Out of 819 argv comparing stdout, stderr and exit code, none differed. The only non-SAME rows were 6 --hotspots/--whereis runs that need git history and exit 1 on both sides, because our fixture dir is not a repo.
  • The adversarial shapes all match the old walk. We tried include A, B, X::Y, include(M), include ::Top, self.include, obj.extend, receiverless raise MixA / helper MixB at class level, modifier-if, if/begin bodies, a def and def self.x, a {} block, class << self, Class.new do / Module.new do / Struct.new do, a concern's included do / class_methods do, class << Registry, include Object.const_get(:X), include foo::Bar, top-level include / extend, and a class that defines its own include. The inherit-reference count matches (17 = 17) and every --lego / --uses / --callers answer is the same.
  • captureRubyMixinBases is really gone, not left next to the new path. The query ↔ C++ split matches the require vocabulary, and the node-kind set is unchanged: [(constant) (scope_resolution)] is exactly what isBaseTypeNodeIn(…, Ruby) admitted. The rubyinheritcheck / rubyreachcheck / chacheck / legotransitivecheck family and ~30 other Ruby and extraction gates pass. So do the touched gates under ASan (clang 22) and --quality-delta (gating 0, the two minor rows you named). CI is green.

None of the points below block the merge:

  1. Make the language seam explicit. @reference.mixin is a language-neutral name, and the consumer arm in captureTagsFacts correctly spends no Lang:: test. But emitCapturedMixinBase is all Ruby: Ruby fields, Ruby directive names, and it mints Lang::Ruby refs. A second language that adopts the capture would be fed to Ruby's guards and silently dropped. PHP's in-body use Trait; is the documented sibling (ingest_relations.h, near the captureBases header). Could the helper move to src/ingest_ruby.h under a Ruby name? The include order allows it: relations → ruby → sidecap. It should take the language from the call site, either as an explicit per-language dispatch or as an EXPECTS( lang == Lang::Ruby ) plus a comment naming what a second language must add. A sentence at tags.scm / sidecap saying Ruby is the only emitter today would also help the next reader.
  2. One construction is not byte-identical. This one is pathological. With 260 nested modules and an include M innermost, --lego=M goes from 0 to 1 implementor, and every answer on that tree gains ruby_bases_unscoped="1" plus a second degraded-notice line. The cause: the Include record still comes from the captureIncludes walk, which stops at kMaxImportContainerDepth (256 AST levels, and Ruby descends every node). The inherit reference now comes from the query, which has no such bound, so rubyDirectiveSitesByFile finds no directive for it. No real code gets there, and the cut is disclosed. One sentence in the CHANGELOG or the helper comment would make "byte-identical" exact.
  3. Some comments are stale or misattributed.
    • graph.h (the lego-transitive M1 comment) now says "the @reference.mixin capture, parser version 131", but 131 introduced the walk.
    • The 131 history entry in ingest_cache.h, plus model.h (RubyClassMixin) and resolve.h (rubyDirectiveSitesByFile), now name emitCapturedMixinBase as the 131 mechanism. History lines usually keep the old name and add "since 173: …".
    • test/rubyinheritcheck.sh:29 and test/legotransitivecheck.sh:21 still name captureRubyMixinBases as current.
    • rubyMixinTargets' header says the capture reads the constant's byte through it, but the capture no longer calls it.
  4. The new arm could be sharper. Its text-guard negative, Logger.new( MixA ), has a receiver, so the receiver half of rubyNamedDirective refuses it too. A change that dropped only the name comparison would still pass. A receiverless class-body line such as raise MixA (we checked: no reference on this head) would pin the name check on its own. An extend and a prepend line in the same fixture would cover all three directives in the one count.
  5. The arm that greps src/ for the absence of captureRubyMixinBases pins code layout rather than output. Keeping it or dropping it is the maintainers' call. The parity arm and an identity sweep are the evidence for a refactor like this.

Parser version: 173 is right against main. As you noted, the final number may move at merge if another extraction change lands first.

CodeRabbit disposition for this PR. CodeRabbit reviewed 39db520 and left 2 minor comments. Both are addressed by the author's follow-up commits, and our review above covers both of them at head 94a6164:

  • 69bcc2be26: adds read-verb evidence plus a migration guard in test/rubyinheritcheck.sh (CodeRabbit's red-first assertion comment).
  • 94a6164319: CHANGELOG now names the byte-identity verbs in the file itself (CodeRabbit's CHANGELOG comment).
CodeRabbit's pre-merge "Linked Issues" warning asks for a red-first test. This PR is a byte-identical refactor, so there is no behaviour to fail on first; our 819-command base/head comparison shows no differences.

Merged, thank you @mpapis. This is the first slice that moves a language's special case onto a shared path. Ruby's include / extend / prepend now go through the same base-relations capture as every other language's base clause, and captureRubyMixinBases is gone. It did so with 819 commands byte-identical before and after. Your follow-up commits for CodeRabbit's two comments were exactly right.

The nit about moving emitCapturedMixinBase into src/ingest_ruby.h behind an explicit language hook is still open. Take it if you'd like, as a small follow-up PR; otherwise we'll fold it into a later train. The conflict with our in-flight Ruby subscript work is mechanical, and we'll resolve it in the next integration train.

…redhat-et#412 review)

The maintainer's one wording fix before merge — and it was their redhat-et#401 note's error, not this PR's.
The disclosure (CHANGELOG and emitCapturedRubyMixinBase's comment) claimed the deep construction gains
a ruby_bases_unscoped="1" and a second degraded-notice line. They re-ran it on main and this head:
ruby_bases_unscoped is absent on every verb, and the depth-bound stderr notice stays the single degraded
line. I reproduced the same on this head with 260 nested modules + an innermost include: --lego lists the
includer (implementors="1", <impl n="M259">), stderr carries exactly one "import-container nesting past
the depth bound" notice, and ruby_bases_unscoped appears on none of map/--tree/--deps/--lego.

The 'gains one implementor' half was right and stays. The comment now quotes the actual notice and states
the attribute does not appear. Point-5 grep guard kept, per 'we'd keep it'.

Conflicts with redhat-et#401 (slice 4a), resolved as its review's fold notes say:
CHANGELOG.md (all entries), src/ingest_cache.h + src/quality.h (the lane's 174
note kept under the train number 176), src/ingest_relations.h (redhat-et#401's comment
line + the lane's rubyConstantArguments forward declaration),
test/qschemetripcheck.sh (both RE-PIN LOG entries), test/qschemetrip.hash
(re-derived once at the train's versions commit), test/regression.sh (union:
langidentitycheck + subscriptopcheck). Also restores the blank line between
two CHANGELOG entries the previous merge joined.

…ow-up to #401)

The maintainer's #401 review point 1, which he left open for a follow-up PR.

@reference.mixin is a language-neutral capture name and the consumer arm correctly spends no Lang::
branch to reach it — but emitCapturedMixinBase was entirely Ruby (Ruby fields, Ruby directive names,
Lang::Ruby refs) while sitting in the shared ingest_relations.h. A second language that adopted the
capture would have been fed to Ruby's guards and silently dropped.

Move the reader to src/ingest_ruby.h as emitCapturedRubyMixinBase (the include order allows it:
relations -> ruby -> sidecap), take the language from the call site, and EXPECTS( lang == Ruby )
inside it. Ruby is the capture's only emitter today; tags.scm and the consumer comment now say so and
name what a second language must add — its own reader and a per-language dispatch, never Ruby's guards.
PHP's in-body `use Trait;` is cited as the documented sibling.

Also folds the #401 review's non-blocking points 2-4, which are accuracy fixes to comments and a test
that #401 itself put on main:

- point 3: six comments were stale or anachronistic. graph.h / ingest_cache.h's 131 history / model.h /
resolve.h named the NEW reader as the parser-version-131 mechanism; history lines now keep
  captureRubyMixinBases and add "since 173: ...". rubyinheritcheck.sh:29 and legotransitivecheck.sh:21
named the retired function as current. rubyMixinTargets' header implied the capture reads the
constant's byte through it; it does not call it.
- point 2: one construction is not byte-identical — the Include record stops at kMaxImportContainerDepth
(256 AST levels) while the query-borne inherit reference has no such bound, so past that depth the
reference has no directive to join to. Pathological, disclosed; a sentence in the CHANGELOG and the
  helper comment makes "byte-identical" exact.
- point 4: the arm's text-guard negative, Logger.new( MixA ), has a receiver, so the receiver half of
rubyNamedDirective refused it too — a change that dropped only the NAME comparison would have passed.
Add a receiverless class-body `raise MixA` (name guard alone, 0 refs) and extend/prepend lines, so one
count covers all three directives: 4 -> 6.

No behaviour change; byte-identical against the merged main (map / --deps / --skipped and the
--callers/--callees/--impact/--uses read verbs over the Rails corpus, the mixin fixture and the Ruby
fixtures). kParserVer unchanged — no extraction semantics move.
