# Evaluate Langfuse traces with ASSERT

You already have production conversations in Langfuse. This example exports a
small cohort, reconstructs the full conversations for ASSERT, and judges them
against an explicit policy.

The agent is not run again. There is no test generation or inference stage:
ASSERT evaluates traffic that already exists.

## What this example evaluates

The synthetic fixture represents **Helix Docs Assistant**, a RAG assistant for
a fictional open-source project. It contains 8 conversations split across 20
Langfuse traces and deliberately includes:

- an unsupported claim;
- an internal-document leak;
- stale guidance;
- a caveat dropped under pressure;
- an unnecessary refusal;
- an answer without a citation;
- two clean controls.

The fixture mixes OpenInference, OpenTelemetry GenAI semantic conventions, and
Langfuse-native observations. This exercises the trace shapes a real Langfuse
project can contain.

## Prerequisites

From the repository root:

Steps 1-4 are local and require no credentials. Step 5 invokes the configured
judge model and requires the corresponding LiteLLM environment variables.

## 1. Generate the pretend Langfuse traffic

## 2. Convert the traces into ASSERT conversations

Why conversion is necessary: Langfuse stores message and tool content in its
normalized `input` and `output` fields. The bridge projects that content back
onto OpenInference/OTel attributes, re-types numeric metadata, groups traces by
`session.id`, and restores user, assistant, system, and tool roles.

## 3. Inspect before you judge

Never spend judge tokens until the reconstructed transcript is correct.

Confirm that retrieved chunk text and its `doc`, `version`, `access`, and
`status` metadata reach the transcript. A structurally valid trace with missing
conversation content is a failed import.

Run the deterministic compatibility check:

It checks that all 20 traces become 8 ordered conversations, every turn appears
exactly once, and the taxonomy contains the expected permissibility flags.

## 4. Review the permissible and impermissible behaviors

[`taxonomy.json`](taxonomy.json) is the source of truth for permissibility.
Every `behavior_categories` entry declares the flag explicitly:

Use this pattern in your own taxonomy:

Do not omit `permissible` or infer it from the category name. ASSERT uses
`taxonomy.behavior_categories[].permissible` when generating and aggregating
results.

The judge-only configuration is [`eval_config.yaml`](eval_config.yaml). Its
`behavior.description` states the full policy, while
`pipeline.judge.dimensions` defines the concrete yes/no measurements.

## 5. Run the judge

This step invokes `azure/gpt-4.1-mini` by default. Set the matching provider
environment variables without printing or committing their values, or replace
the model with another LiteLLM model string.

LLM judgments are measurements, not ground truth. Calibrate each dimension on
hand-labeled conversations before using its rate as a production KPI.

## 6. Read the results

Look for:

- the violated dimension;
- the evidence-cited justification;
- the specific transcript turns that caused the verdict;
- any judge failure or content-filter status.

## Use your own Langfuse project

Set your Langfuse connection in the current shell:

You can also filter with `--session-id`, `--user-id`, or `--tags`.

Then:

1. inspect the emitted `inference_set.jsonl`;
2. copy `eval_config.yaml` and replace the Helix policy with your policy;
3. create a taxonomy with explicit permissible and impermissible categories;
4. update `suite` and `run` so they match the inference-set destination;
5. run only the judge stage.

The direct API client uses Langfuse's public trace list and trace-detail
endpoints. If your Langfuse version no longer exposes the v1 trace-detail
shape, export full traces through the Langfuse SDK and pass the resulting JSON
to `--input`.
