sovereign-stack is a Windows-friendly guide and app bundle for people who want more control over their digital life. It helps you move away from Google, Microsoft, and Apple services and use self-hosted open-source tools instead.
It is built around 5 phases that help you switch step by step. You do not need to be a developer. You do not need to know Linux or server setup to start.
- Store your photos in your own private space with tools like Immich
- Keep files, calendars, and notes in one place with Nextcloud
- Save passwords in a self-hosted vault with Vaultwarden
- Search the web without using a major search profile with SearXNG
- Use Firefox with privacy-focused settings
- Set up private network access with WireGuard
- Replace common cloud services with open-source tools
- Follow a clear plan instead of jumping between apps
See which services you use now and what to move first.
Prepare your system and choose the tools you need.
Bring over files, photos, passwords, and search habits.
Tighten browser, network, and account settings.
Use a stable setup that you can manage on your own.

The app and guides are organized around common tasks:

- Private search setup for SearXNG
- Password migration to Vaultwarden
- File sync setup with Nextcloud
- Photo storage setup with Immich
- VPN setup with WireGuard
- A simple plan for each phase
Firefox is often the first place to begin. It affects search, sync, and account use across the web.
Passwords are key to account control. Vaultwarden helps you keep them in one place.
Nextcloud gives you a private place for files, notes, and shared folders.
Immich helps you keep your photo library under your control.
SearXNG and WireGuard help reduce tracking and keep your traffic under your control.
Bring over bookmarks, passwords, and saved settings from your old browser.
Copy your photos from Google Photos, iCloud, or another cloud source.
Download your files from your current cloud service and add them to Nextcloud.
Save a copy of your password export before you switch tools.
Use WireGuard when you want a safer remote connection.
This project focuses on plain privacy wins:
- Fewer large cloud accounts
- Less data shared across services
- More control over login and storage
- More open-source tools
- More self-hosted options
A browser with privacy controls and simple setup steps.
A private cloud for files, calendars, contacts, and notes.
A password manager you can host yourself.
A search tool that keeps search use away from large ad systems.
A photo app for self-hosted image storage and viewing.
A VPN tool for private network access.
You can use sovereign-stack on Windows even if parts of the journey later move to a server, NAS, or Linux system.
On Windows, the app helps you:
- download the right files
- open setup steps in order
- move data from old services
- keep each phase easy to follow
- Right-click the file
- Choose Run as administrator
- Try the newest release again
- Open the downloaded file from your Downloads folder
- Check whether Windows marked it as blocked
- Run the latest version from the release page
- Try again later
- Use a wired connection if you can
- Make sure your browser is not pausing large downloads
- Open it from Command Prompt if the release includes a console version
- Check that the full download finished
- Download the latest build again
Before moving anything, keep a backup of:
- photos
- documents
- browser bookmarks
- passwords
- contact exports
- calendar exports
Use a second drive or cloud folder you trust. Keep one copy separate from your main PC.
If you want the simplest path, follow this order:
- Firefox
- Passwords
- Files
- Photos
- Search
- VPN
- Full self-hosted setup
This order keeps the most important data safe early.
After setup, test these items:
- Can you open the app?
- Can you reach the release page?
- Can you follow the phase guide?
- Can you find your chosen tool list?
- Can you copy one small file or bookmark?
Use the release page to get the latest Windows build:
Open that page, choose the newest release, and download the Windows file from there
