Enjoyable — modern macOS fork

This fork works on modern macOS — tested on macOS 26 (Apple Silicon, native arm64 + Intel universal binary). It restores the Sony PS3 / DualShock 3 controller support that macOS 12 Monterey broke, fixes a crash on every app switch on macOS 10.15+, requests the Accessibility permission properly, and keeps the original light interface. See the sections below for details.

Patched and debugged with Claude Code.

Enjoyable is an application for Mac OS X which allows you to use controller inputs like a mouse or keyboard.

If you've ever played a video game which only supports mouse and keyboard input but you want to use a joystick or gamepad, then Enjoyable will help you do that.

Enjoyable supports

  • Mapping gamepad and joystick buttons to keyboard and mouse actions
  • Fine control over mouse movement and scrolling using analog axis inputs
  • Automatic and dynamic switching between different input mappings
  • Downloading and sharing input presets for different applications
  • Modern OS X features like resume and automatic termination
  • Support for MFi controllers, like Steelseries' Nimbus

Enjoyable is free software written by Joe Wreschnig and is based on the Enjoy codebase written by Yifeng Huang and Sam McCall. It has been trivially modernized and modestly enhanced by Shawn Allen, to better support MFi controllers.

Changes in this fork (modern macOS support)

  • PS3 / DualShock 3 restored on macOS 12+ (details below)
  • No more crash on app switch on macOS 10.15+: the automatic mapping switcher indexed into a window title list that modern macOS returns empty without the Screen Recording permission
  • Accessibility permission prompt: the app now requests the permission it needs to post keyboard/mouse events (without it, macOS 10.14+ silently drops them and mappings appear dead), so it shows up in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility
  • Original light appearance preserved (the 2013 interface was never designed for dark mode)
  • Universal binary: native on Apple Silicon and Intel

PS3 / DualShock 3 fix for macOS 12+

This fork restores support for the Sony Sixaxis / DualShock 3 on macOS Monterey and later — tested through macOS 26.

Since macOS 12, the system no longer puts the DualShock 3 into report mode (Apple feedback FB9745903): the controller enumerates as a HID device but never delivers any input, so apps like Enjoyable list it with all its buttons and axes while button presses do nothing.

The fix replays the activation handshake when a DualShock 3 is connected over USB — feature report reads 0xF2/0xF5 followed by the "enable operational mode" feature report 0xF4 with payload 42 0C 00 00 — which starts the input report stream. This mirrors what SDL's HIDAPI PS3 driver and the Linux hid-sony kernel driver do. (Bluetooth pairing of the DualShock 3 was dropped entirely by macOS and cannot be fixed app-side; use a USB cable.)

This fork also builds as a universal binary (Apple Silicon + Intel).

How to Use

To start, just press a button on your joystick or gamepad, then press the key you want to map it for. Then press the ▶ button and switch back to your game. For more details, Enjoyable has a in-application manual available in Help Viewer via ⌘?.

Enjoyable works by sending input events, like keypresses and mouse movement, to other applications on your Mac. In order for Enjoyable to properly function with more recent versions of macOS, you must enable Enjoyable via the Accessibility option in the Privacy pane of Security & Privacy preferences.

To open this pane on your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, click Privacy, then select the Accessibility option from the list.

Requirements

  • Mac OS X 10.7+
  • One or more HID-compatible (e.g. USB or Bluetooth) input devices
