title: "Running Gemini CLI v0.57.0 with Cloud Workstations OAuth fixes"

I was setting up Gemini CLI inside a Google Cloud Workstation and hit an OAuth redirect URI mismatch — the CLI couldn't dynamically resolve the proxy URL. Version 0.57.0 fixes this plus several stability improvements.

## What's new in v0.57.0

Released August 25, 2026, the headline fix is **dynamic Cloud Workstations proxy redirect URI resolution** for OAuth flows ([#28688](https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/28688)). Previously, the CLI used a hardcoded redirect URI that didn't match Cloud Workstations' proxy URL pattern, breaking authentication.

Other notable changes:

- **IDE connection stability** — fixed swallowed directory mismatch errors when connecting to VS Code and other editors ([#28729](https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/28729))
- **Eval validation framework** — added tool call formatter and failure summaries for automated evaluation ([#28344](https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/28344), [#28305](https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/28305))
- **Silent retries for capacity errors** — context-aware retries with availability TTL to handle transient capacity exhaustion ([#28790](https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/28790))
- **Multi-turn cancellation rollback** — entire request rolls back on cancellation/abort instead of leaving partial state ([#28801](https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/28801))
- **Git environment normalization** — resolves workspace state mismatch between CLI and git ([#28792](https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/28792))
- **TUI timeout fixes** — prevents indefinite hangs by adding execution timeouts ([#28812](https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/28812))
- **Sub-agent handoff token regression fix** — resolves token loss on startup ([#28882](https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli/pull/28882))

## Installation

```bash
npm install -g @google/gemini-cli@latest
# or for the preview channel
npm install -g @google/gemini-cli@preview
```

Verify the version:

```bash
gemini --version
# 0.57.0
```

## Testing the Cloud Workstations OAuth fix

If you use Cloud Workstations, the OAuth flow should now work without manual configuration. The CLI detects the proxy environment and constructs the correct redirect URI automatically.

```bash
# Inside a Cloud Workstation
gemini auth login
# Opens browser with correct redirect URI for the proxy
```

## Eval validation example

The new eval framework lets you validate tool calling behavior programmatically:

```bash
# Run eval suite
gemini eval run --suite my-eval-suite
# Generate coverage report
gemini eval coverage --output coverage.json
```

## Capacity error handling

The silent retry logic is transparent but you'll notice fewer "capacity exhausted" errors during peak usage. The CLI now:

1. Detects capacity errors (HTTP 429/503 with specific error codes)
2. Waits with exponential backoff + jitter
3. Respects an availability TTL cache to avoid hammering exhausted endpoints
4. Retries the full multi-turn request atomically
