v0.13.1: v0.13.1

What's new

The template folder stays out of Tasks, search and tags. ZenNotes 2.80.0 lets a vault keep its templates as ordinary notes in a folder (Settings, Templates, Template folder, saved as templates.folder in .zennotes/vault.json). A template's checkboxes are placeholders, not work, and its tags belong to the note it will make, so zn now leaves that folder out the same way the app does:

  • zn task list, zn task watch, the TUI's Tasks and zn mcp's list_tasks skip tasks in the template folder, even inside a Task folder. --include-excluded (includeExcluded in MCP) still lists everything.
  • zn search, the TUI's Search vault text and zn mcp's search_text skip template notes before the result limit, so the limit goes to real notes.
  • zn tag list, zn tag find, zn list --tag, list_tags, search_by_tag and the TUI's Tags view leave template tags out of names and counts.
  • The TUI's Search notes hides templates until the query starts with the folder's path, as in Templates/meet.
  • Title search, plain zn list and tag renames still reach templates, so you can find one to edit it and a renamed tag stays in step.
  • The folder setting follows a folder rename or move, and the TUI's Settings shows it next to the Tasks folders. On a server vault, the server applies the same rules.

Changelog

  • 2df43e938cd5567ba3a759cc5f81c08c9eca496d Feat(tags): a note in the template folder contributes no tags
  • 191a891c6c0b715b030ffe84dd5d2f2852b6aa66 Feat(tui): Search notes hides templates until the query names their folder
  • 140ca2d719c96a9b158e8924b71d5a79b1089b94 Feat(vault): zn leaves the vault's template folder out of Tasks and text search

Install

With Homebrew on macOS or Linux, run brew install zennotes/tap/zn, then zn tui.

Download the archive for your platform, unpack it, and put zn on your PATH.
With Go installed, go install github.com/ZenNotes/tui/cmd/zn@&#8203;latest builds the same thing.

v0.13.0: v0.13.0

What's new

zn mcp can share part of a vault, read-only if you like. Until now an MCP client saw the whole vault. Four flags now scope the server, and the server enforces them on every tool, so a hidden note cannot turn up in a listing, a search, a tag, a task, a backlink or an error:

zn mcp --allow-path Projects --deny-path Projects/Clients --read-only
  • --allow-path <path> shares only that folder or note, and what is inside it. Repeat it for more. Without it, the whole vault is shared.
  • --deny-path <path> hides a folder or note, even inside an allowed one.
  • --read-only offers the read tools only. --access comment adds the comment tools; --access write (the default) is everything the paths allow.
  • A hidden note answers exactly like a missing one. Paths through a symbolic link, case variants of a hidden folder and .zennotes do not exist for the client, and its errors never show where the vault lives.
  • Tools a client cannot use are not listed, and every tool now tells clients whether it only reads or can destroy.

The desktop's bundled MCP server takes the same flags with the same rules in ZenNotes 2.80.0, and both pass one shared test of what a scoped client sees. The README has the details.

What's fixed

Assistants stay inside the note folders. In a vault whose notes live at the root, zn mcp's note and folder tools treated ZenNotes' own .zennotes folder, the attachments folder and the archive as subfolders of the notes, so an assistant could move, read or delete them. Every create, move, rename and delete now resolves both ends the way the note listings do, and read_note reads Markdown notes only. zn's own commands follow the same rules.

New rows stay in view. When the view a database opens on shows picked rows (desktop 2.79.0 and later), the row zn base add makes now joins them, so it shows up in the app. The TUI's a does the same for the view on screen.

Changelog

  • d4f65fcf1d4a30d8ab07c4e7da7c5599014c6f51 Feat(mcp): zn mcp can share part of a vault, read-only if asked (chore(deps): update golang.org/x/exp digest to 47ecfdc #21)
  • eb3d11b14546e169235e7021441a570b914df153 Fix(base): a row zn base add makes joins the picks of the view it opens on
  • 6873dd0bdf79a53e39a9e846a6e774e6682d92f3 Fix(mcp): a scoped assistant cannot create notes through a link
  • 39110a26010140b985f734a86db3b754aebc44d7 Fix(mcp): assistants stay inside the note folders
  • dd5a39feaee3383bccf49464e89ec2a66b9bd78d Fix(mcp): the scope contract fixture checks out with LF on Windows
  • cae76aff84741cd6208c58a3a94fea90df4ac771 Test(mcp): the scope contract finds the vault root in JSON on Windows
  • f8bfb89dbd8b8330db2a13fe03e86f16a6d08887 Test(mcp): zn mcp and the desktop's MCP server answer one scoped-access contract

What's New in v0.28.40

v0.28.40 is a patch on v0.28.39. It repeats v0.28.39's notes and adds three Inbox fixes, listed first under Smaller changes.

Reply to an agent without leaving full screen, thread names lead the Inbox list, and a Claude Code session keeps its messages in one project. In code review, the sidebar is redesigned and Call flow shows its paths as cards. 29 PRs.

Plannotator Inbox

Reply from full screen

An image, video or HTML file in full screen has a card at its foot with two tabs: comment on the file, or reply to the agent. The reply is the thread's own draft, files included, and Send keeps you in full screen. Minimize the card to a small pill, or hide it.

Thread names lead

A list row's title is now the thread's name, shown in full. The agents' icons sit beside the project. A pinned thread and an open thread show the name too.

One project per Claude Code session

A Claude Code session now files its messages under the folder it started in, so a cd no longer makes a new project. Claude Code's own /cd still moves the session. Projects that were split before stay as they are; Archive all hides them.

Open the files your reply commented on

In your sent reply, each file named under "Feedback on the attached files" is a link that opens the file beside the thread. If the file has since moved or been deleted, the link opens the version you sent.

Pinned and Projects fold like folders

Click the Pinned or Projects heading in the sidebar to close or open it. A closed Pinned still shows how many pinned threads wait on you.

Smaller changes

  • Update works with update checks off. When a newer version is known, the Inbox still offers Update, and clicking it checks once before installing. Automatic install stays off while checks are off. #2380
  • The thread's top bar always shows the thread's name, or its subject when it has none. #2379
  • Beside an open thread and on a phone, list rows show the agents first, then the project on one line. #2383
  • Pin thread moved from the thread header into its ⋯ menu. #2352
  • Open actions show as a small box with a count, and open questions as a speech bubble with a count. #2348
  • Projects show their folder name, adding a parent folder only when two listed projects share a name. #2349
  • One project's list header shows the name without the folder path. The path is in its tooltip. #2355
  • The thread header on a phone fits on one line, with nothing cut. #2357
  • An agent's inline image from a hidden folder in a project, such as .ops, now shows, as it does when attached. #2343
  • Picture choices in full screen keep the letter from their own label. #2350
  • The What's new link and its images retry after a quit or a failed fetch, and the link stays until you have seen it. #2345, #2346
  • Agents are told to keep one thread per work stream, unless you say otherwise. #2367
  • An agent that lists threads from a folder with none is told which projects inside that folder have threads. #2368
  • New thread no longer says when the agent will take the message. #2351
  • The agent logos on Copy prompt tilt apart on hover. #2347

Plannotator

A new code review sidebar

Go to file is a field at the top of the sidebar, and Tree, Git status and Commits are tabs. Progress reads in words ("0 of 12 viewed · 1 staged"), and line counts line up in columns. The settings from Tree controls, and Copy all diffs, are now in the "…" menu.

Call flow as cards

In code review, each entry point in Call flow's Paths view is a card. Dots mark new, removed and unchanged calls, and one line sums up the changes.

Smaller changes

  • Call flow (opt-in) now needs CallDiff 0.6.0 and Node 22.18 or newer. Trees are more accurate, and CUDA files are read as C++. If Call flow is on, the new version installs once, automatically. CallDiff is by @tanishqkancharla. #2365
  • Updates recover from killed or overlapping installs. #2342
  • Agents started by Ask AI, code review, Code Tour and Guided Review no longer post to your Inbox or wait on a plan review. #2366, #2369, #2371

jdx/usage (usage)

v7.1.4: v7.1.4: Mounted scripts tolerate rejected env values; Cobra exporter quotes boolean and numeric defaults

Compare Source

A mount run= that reads another usage script's spec no longer fails when an environment variable holds a value that script rejects, and the Cobra exporter now writes specs that usage lint accepts.

Fixed

  • (lib) A mount run= that gets its spec from another usage-shebang script now works even when the environment holds a value that one of that script's env-bound flags rejects (#1591, @jdx). For example, if the child declares flag "--mode <m>" env="X_MODE" { choices "a" "b" }, then X_MODE=zzz ./parent sub used to fail with Invalid choice for option mode: zzz (exit 181), and completion failed the same way. When usage runs the script itself and the parse fails, it now drops the env values the spec rejects and keeps the valid ones. If the parse still fails, the original error is reported. Running the script directly still reports invalid env values, and a bad value typed on the command line is still an error.

When a mount does fail, the error now names the command being resolved:

could not read the commands mounted under `sub`: exited with code 1
    sh -c ./child2

This message comes from usage-lib, so CLIs built on it show the same wording. Script exit codes have not changed, and they are now documented in docs/cli/scripts.md: the script's own code when it runs, 1 when the command line doesn't satisfy the spec, and 181 when usage can't read or run something the spec depends on, such as an invalid spec or a failing mount.

  • (cli) The Cobra integration now quotes flag defaults that KDL would otherwise read as non-strings (#1595, @jdx). Before this fix, a Bool flag defaulting to true or an Int flag defaulting to -1 produced default=true or default=-1, and usage lint rejected the spec. Defaults such as true, false, null, inf, -inf, nan, signed numbers (-1, +1, -0.5) and values containing [ or ] are now written as quoted strings. Plain values such as json are still written without quotes.
