This commit replaces the insecure hardcoded "admin" and "admin123" dummy credentials in `backend/auth.py` with environment variables (`ADMIN_USERNAME`, `ADMIN_PASSWORD`). Additionally, it uses `secrets.compare_digest` with UTF-8 encoding to securely verify the credentials and prevent timing attacks. π‘ Vulnerability: Hardcoded admin credentials (
admin/admin123) were present directly inbackend/auth.py. Furthermore, it used a basic string comparison (!=), which is vulnerable to timing attacks.π― Impact: Exposes administrative access to anyone who can read the repository or discover the credentials. It could allow an attacker to bypass authentication entirely and gain full administrative privileges over the system.
π§ Fix: Replaced hardcoded dummy credentials with environment variables (
ADMIN_USERNAMEandADMIN_PASSWORD). Utilizedsecrets.compare_digestwith.encode('utf-8')to perform secure, constant-time comparisons that protect against timing attacks while avoidingTypeErrorexceptions for non-ASCII characters. Also added a check to securely fail with an HTTP 500 status if these environment variables are missing, preventing insecure default access.β Verification: Verified by creating and running an ad-hoc pytest script (
tests/verify_auth.py) that successfully tested the updated authentication logic across valid, invalid, missing, and unicode inputs. The file was then removed.
