Problem
On locked-down institutional Windows machines (schools, agencies, CISO-managed endpoints),
security software / firewalls can block the bundled Solr/Tika Java processes or their local
ports, so FreeEed's services silently don't come up — even though the install itself succeeded.
Ask
Add a short, linkable firewall/antivirus allowlist guide for institutional installs:
- which processes/ports FreeEed uses locally (Solr 8983, Tika 9998, Tomcat/Review 8090 — all
localhost),
- that these are local-only services (nothing phones home during processing),
- example allowlist/exception entries an IT admin can apply.
Notes
This is documentation, not code, but it's what unblocks the exact segment we most want
(privacy-first schools/agencies). Pairs with the Control-Panel "surface Solr failure" and
configurable-port issues. The durable code fix for the underlying friction is the downloadable
VM/appliance and JRE bundling (#559).
