🧭 eCommerce Tech Radar 2026 – Personal Perspective

Status Updated Experience

What Is This?

My living technology radar, based on 21+ years of experience and 70+ delivered eCommerce projects. Rings follow the standard tech-radar convention:

  • Adopt — I actively recommend this for new projects
  • Trial — Proven on real client work, not yet my default
  • Evaluate — On my radar, worth watching, not yet client-ready
  • Hold — Proceed with caution, avoid for new builds

Organized by quadrant so it's not just "platforms." Update quarterly — last full review: July 2026.

🏗️ Platforms & Storefronts

Adopt

Technology Why Ideal For
WooCommerce True open-source flexibility, huge plugin ecosystem Small–mid projects, quick deploy
Medusa.js Open-source, modular commerce engine Complex, custom needs
Shopify Headless (Hydrogen) Speed + reliability, decoupled frontend Brands needing full UX control

Trial

Technology Why
Saleor GraphQL-first, Python backend, strong for API-driven builds
Medusa v2 Modular architecture is a real step up from v1, still maturing plugin ecosystem

Evaluate

  • Vendure — TypeScript-native, growing fast, thin plugin ecosystem so far
  • Shopify Functions — replacing legacy checkout scripts, worth tracking as it matures

Hold

Technology Why Cautious
Magento (Adobe Commerce) High TCO, complex maintenance, steep hosting costs
WordPress with unmaintained plugins Security risk, common source of the emergency-migration cases I get called in for

💳 Payments & Checkout

Adopt

Technology Why Ideal For
Stripe Best-in-class docs, reliability, global coverage Most projects by default
Shopify Payments Zero-friction native integration Shopify-native stores

Trial

Technology Why
Mercado Pago Strong LatAm coverage, essential for regional marketplace integrations

Evaluate

  • Stablecoin/crypto checkout options — still niche, watching for real client demand before adopting
  • BNPL aggregators beyond the big 3 — market is consolidating, wait before committing

Hold

Technology Why Cautious
Custom-built payment gateway integrations PCI scope and maintenance burden rarely justified vs. using a processor's hosted fields

☁️ Infrastructure & DevOps

Adopt

Technology Why Ideal For
Cloudflare Security + CDN + DNS in one, excellent free tier Every project, no exceptions
AWS (ECS, RDS, Lambda) Mature, scalable, deep ecosystem Enterprise-grade needs
Docker Environment parity between staging and prod, non-negotiable for me now Every project

Trial

Technology Why
GitHub Actions Simple CI/CD for small-to-mid teams, less overhead than Jenkins

Evaluate

  • Edge functions (Cloudflare Workers, Vercel Edge) for storefront personalization logic

Hold

Technology Why Cautious
Self-managed bare-metal hosting Ties up ops time better spent elsewhere, rarely cheaper once labor is counted

📊 Data, Analytics & AI

Adopt

Technology Why Ideal For
GA4 + server-side tagging iOS/cookie tracking loss makes server-side essential now Every project

Trial

Technology Why
AI agents for customer support (see automation-agents-for-ecommerce) Real client deployments cutting first-response time significantly
LLM-assisted product description generation Works well with a human review step, not yet trustworthy unsupervised

Evaluate

  • AI-driven dynamic pricing engines — promising, but I haven't seen one earn its cost on mid-size catalogs yet
  • Predictive inventory/demand forecasting tools — worth another look in 6 months

Hold

Technology Why Cautious
Fully autonomous AI agents for pricing or inventory decisions with no human approval step Too much blast radius for a mistake; every deployment I've seen keep a human in the loop

🔌 Integrations & Marketing

Adopt

Technology Why Ideal For
Klaviyo Best eCommerce-native email/SMS platform, strong Shopify/WooCommerce integrations Most DTC brands

Trial

Technology Why
Mercado Libre API integrations Core to LatAm marketplace strategy, see the used books marketplace case study

Evaluate

  • Unified commerce/OMS platforms that promise single-view inventory across channels — evaluating 2 vendors now

Hold

Technology Why Cautious
Point solutions with no public API Creates integration debt; I now rule these out at the vendor-selection stage

Next Step

See these calls play out in real client work — the radar isn't theoretical, it's what's actually in production.
