MeowTTY, a black cat with a terminal tag

MeowTTY

A real Linux computer for AI coding agents, in your pocket.

MeowTTY is an Android app. It gives your phone a full Linux system and a chat screen on top of it. You talk to a coding agent. The agent works inside the Linux system: it reads files, runs commands, installs packages, writes code, builds apps and tests them. You see the work as a clean chat. The real terminal is one tap away.

Status: private prototype. It runs daily on a Nothing Phone 3a. It is not ready for a release. The source code is not public yet. This page shows what the app does and what comes next.

Screenshots

These screens come from a test phone with demo projects: a Flappy Bird game and a cat cafe website, both built by an agent in the app.

The agent built a website and hosted it with the Servers feature. It opens in the phone browser. The agent also built a small game.

How it works

  • A real userland. MeowTTY downloads a real ARM64 Linux system into the app: Debian, Ubuntu or Arch Linux ARM. You get apt or pacman, git, node, tmux and gh. Nothing is faked.
  • No root. The system runs under proot. Your phone stays locked and safe.
  • Any agent. An agent that runs on Linux ARM64 runs here. It can install its own tools and drive the phone over ADB.
  • agentd. A small helper in the Linux system. It starts the agents, reads what they do and tells the app.

Features today

Chat

  • Markdown, code blocks with a copy button, tool cards, diffs, images and error cards.
  • Live replies that stream into one bubble.
  • A queue chip: send a message while the agent works, take it back with one tap.
  • Slash command hints for the agent in front.
  • Attach files and images.
  • A usage ring: plan limits, cost of a chat, context window, phone memory.
  • Optional terminal chat style (monospace, square corners) and compact text.

Agents and models

  • Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, pi and a plain shell. You choose which to install.
  • Several Claude Code accounts side by side.
  • Models from Anthropic, OpenAI, OpenCode Go, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Google and more.
  • Local models on the phone, with no internet. Search Hugging Face from the app.
  • One sheet for model, effort and permission mode. Change it while the agent works.
  • One button updates the Linux system and every agent.

Sessions

  • Many sessions at once. They keep running when you switch apps.
  • History: reopen an old Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode or pi chat.
  • Session list with search, groups and swipe to close.
  • Notifications with a Reply button and answer buttons.
  • Floating bubbles, one for each session.

Terminal and files

  • A real terminal with a keys row you can edit.
  • A file browser with rendered Markdown and syntax colours. Import, export and unpack.
  • A storage manager: find build caches and big folders, then delete them.

Servers and services

  • Run websites, game servers or scripts in the background. Start and stop them in the app or from a home screen widget.
  • Reach them from your other devices through Tailscale.

Setup and connections

  • A first-run flow: a Linux system and four agents in about six minutes.
  • Install Debian, Ubuntu and Arch side by side. Copy the whole setup between them.
  • GitHub and GitLab sign-in for gh and glab.
  • Tailscale built in, with SSH. Syncthing built in.
  • Encrypted backup and restore.
  • Themes: OLED, Dark, Light, any accent colour or the wallpaper colour.

Make it yours

You do not need a settings menu for everything. Tell your agent:

  • "Install Python and Rust, and set up a project."
  • "Add this plugin to my agent."
  • "Set up ADB to this phone, then build and test my app."

Limits

  • No root, no systemd, no Docker, no kernel modules.
  • Programs built only for x86 do not run.
  • File-heavy work is slower than on a PC.
  • Phones have little memory. Big local models need other apps closed.
