Converting tab_not_found into a success response at the host drops the renderer's #9194 durable-tombstone protection. The host's own close adjudication throws tab_not_found precisely because it will not retire the tab, yet the renderer only makes the close intent durable on the error path — see the inline note.
Reviewed changes
- Host RPC treats absent targets as idempotent —
session.tabs.closeandsession.tabs.closeLifecyclenow catchselector_not_found/tab_not_found/terminal_tab_not_foundfromcloseMobileSessionTaband resolve{ closed: true, notFound: true }with span attributedecision = allowed-already-absent. - Renderer absence-proof set widened —
hostHasNoSuchTabnow also matchesselector_not_foundandterminal_tab_not_found, keeping the close intent durable instead of clearing it. - Tests — parameterized host tests for
selector_not_found/tab_not_foundon both methods, and renderer tests for all three codes assertingunknown-tabplus a pending intent.
ℹ️ Nitpicks
notFoundis not declared onRuntimeMobileSessionTabCloseResult(src/shared/runtime-session-contracts.ts:195), and no consumer reads it — the new wire field is untyped and effectively dead.isSessionTabNotFoundError(session-tab-close-methods.ts:16) reimplements the sharedhasRuntimeRpcErrorCode(src/shared/runtime-rpc-error-code.ts:25) for the same three codes; reuse the shared matcher instead.- The host test only rejects with
new Error(code)for two of the three codes, so the helper's{ code }/error.codebranches andterminal_tab_not_foundare never exercised.

The prior must-address finding is unaddressed. The new commit is a force-push that keeps the same selector_not_found classification and removes the host regression test, so nothing changed on the code path this review flagged.
Reviewed changes (delta since the prior pullfrog review at b953ed7)
- Branch force-pushed to one squashed commit on
main—web-runtime-session-tab-lifecycle.ts:168-171and its test additions are byte-for-byte the same change previously reviewed. - Host regression test removed —
src/main/runtime/rpc/methods/session-tabs-absent-close.test.tsis gone, so nothing now pins thatsession.tabs.close/closeLifecyclekeep propagating these codes instead of swallowing them. - PR body rewritten — now describes the fix as terminal-tab absence with a live Linux/macOS/Windows verification matrix; the reachability question raised previously is unchanged.
⚠️ selector_not_found remains classified as definitive absence
The code is unchanged, so the prior concern stands. The repo documents selector_not_found as an unresolved condition rather than proof the target is gone (remote-browser-stream-errors.ts:17-22), and commit 08260a54bf removed it from a permanent set for exactly that reason. Making the close intent durable on it can suppress a tab the host can still close, with no per-tab recovery within a session.
Technical details
# `selector_not_found` is not absence proof
## Affected sites
- `web-runtime-session-tab-lifecycle.ts:170` — absence-proof match for `selector_not_found` (inline note from the prior review still applies).
- `web-session-close-intent.ts:75,95-99` — durable entries skip TTL eviction and clear only when the surface leaves a snapshot.
- `browser-workspace-tab-close.ts:113-119` — `unknown-tab` from every owner triggers `tearDownBrowserWorkspaceTabLocally`.
- `src/main/runtime/orca-runtime-resolve-worktree-selector.ts:99-105` — the throw site; reachable for browser-tab closes via `browserTabClose` -> `resolveBrowserWorkspace`.
## Required outcome
- A transient `selector_not_found` must not permanently suppress a tab the host can still close on a later attempt.
- Either evidence that the close path only emits this code when the target is genuinely gone, or a narrower classification (keep it retryable).
## Open questions for the human
- The rewritten body frames this as terminal-tab absence, but for terminal tabs the renderer's `id:` selector takes the explicit-id fast path and skips `resolveWorktreeSelector` — so which producer emits `selector_not_found` for the reported case?ℹ️ Nitpicks
- With
session-tabs-absent-close.test.tsremoved, the host propagation contract is unpinned: a future host change that swallowsselector_not_foundwould silently turn this renderer branch into dead code. - The rewritten body's "Multi-Platform Live Verification Matrix" and "I manually tested these changes locally" are not backed by any artifact in the PR.

I took over the existing PR, re-reviewed the implementation against #21189, and pushed b953ed7 to the original author branch.
The adversarial review found that the current implementation is renderer-side by design: selector_not_found propagates through the host RPC and is classified as definitive absence in web-runtime-session-tab-lifecycle.ts. I updated the description to match that behavior and expanded the regression matrix so selector_not_found and terminal_tab_not_found are covered both as unknown-tab outcomes and as durable close intents beyond the TTL. Timeout failures remain retryable.

This reverts commit 07e8c85. The eviction keys on `selector_not_found`, which this repo documents twice as UNKNOWN rather than absence: - `remote-browser-stream-errors.ts`: "it means 'I could not resolve this right now', which is UNKNOWN, not proof the target is gone. Its producer is a live worktree scan behind a 1s-TTL cache ... a slow scan can surface it transiently. Treating that as permanent would strand the pane forever, which is the exact bug this file exists to prevent." - `web-runtime-session-tab-lifecycle.ts`, added by #21277: "'selector_not_found' is a transient worktree resolver state (e.g. during scans or cache warm-up) and must not become a durable close tombstone." Two unambiguous absence codes exist for this purpose -- `tab_not_found` and `terminal_tab_not_found` -- and #21277 had just finished excluding `selector_not_found` from them. This keyed on the excluded one. Consequences, after roughly 3.75s of retries: 1. `closeFile` deletes `editorDrafts[fileId]` with no dirty check and no confirmation, so a transient resolver blip discards unsaved edits. 2. `closeFile` calls `notifyHostOfMirroredEditorClose`, so the host closes its copy too -- the eviction is not local and not recoverable. The `!ownerNotReady` guard does not cover this: `ownerNotReady` means the host is still connecting, while `selector_not_found` is emitted for a cold resolver cache or an unhydrated catalog, which is a different state. #21041 is still open. ELI5
When a remote session tab is still shown locally but the host reports that its target is missing, closing it used to clear the local close marker. The next host snapshot could then bring the dead tab back, causing the flicker loop from #21189. This change keeps the close marker durable for definitive missing-target errors, so the stale tab stays closed.
User impact
Closing a dead or missing remote tab now resolves as unknown-tab and remains suppressed beyond the normal close-intent TTL. Timeouts, selector_not_found, and other transient failures remain retryable with normal TTL eviction.
Mechanism
web-runtime-session-tab-lifecycle.ts treats definitive absence responses (tab_not_found and terminal_tab_not_found) as durable absence. It calls makeWebSessionCloseIntentDurable for each tab id involved in the close, preventing stale snapshots from rematerializing it. Transient conditions like selector_not_found retain standard TTL eviction.

Review notes
This PR was adversarially reviewed against the close path and changed-file diff. Following review from @nwparker, durable tombstones were narrowed to tab_not_found and terminal_tab_not_found, preserving transient TTL eviction for selector_not_found.
