feat: startup update prompt modal and direct self-updating - #1328
Added “Check for updates…” to the Help menu, with a window showing update-check status and results.
The desktop app checks for updates automatically at startup and offers update actions through the status window. Restarting to apply an update is available when there are no unsaved changes.
On web, selecting the update-check command displays a message that update checks are unsupported.
The Windows app can complete an update during startup when requested by the update process.

Walkthrough
FigCraft adds startup and manual update checks. Native builds display updater status and handle updater actions. WebAssembly builds show an unsupported-check message. Windows startup runs the update completion helper before normal startup.

Summary
Update dependencies and runtime state Cargo.toml, crates/ui-egui/Cargo.toml, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs
The workspace adds craft-update, and ui-egui uses it on non-WASM targets. FigApp stores and initializes update runtime state.
Startup and manual check wiring apps/figcraft/src/main.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/toolbar.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/updates_ui.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs
FigCraft enables startup checks. Help-menu commands route manual checks to the update UI. The update runtime queues checks and advances during background ticks.
Update status and Windows finalization crates/ui-egui/src/updates_ui.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, apps/figcraft/src/main.rs, apps/figcraft/Cargo.toml
The update UI displays status, handles updater actions, and clears dismissed status. WebAssembly manual checks show an unsupported-check message. Windows startup runs the update completion helper and exits with its success or failure status.
storytold/figcraft#1312 — It introduces the FigApp background-tick lifecycle used here to advance update checks.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 550b8
Updating with another window open can leave FigCraft running instead of completing the restart. Fix the whole-application close path before merging unless this limitation is explicitly accepted.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 550b8
One-click updates can fail to complete when multiple windows are open, leaving the older application running after installation is reported as successful. Release-verification and unsaved-work safeguards reduce exposure, but the restart transition does not reliably complete across supported platforms.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new update-completion contract requires prompt whole-process exit, but Action::Close only requests closure of the root viewport. With child windows open, the existing close handler cancels that closure and transfers a child into the root, while the updater has already consumed its restart action. Windows finalization aborts after a minute and removes the download, while the live updater remains marked installed and suppresses another installation. Unix replacement may already be on disk while the old process continues running. This can strand security-update activation and leave installation and runtime state inconsistent.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The sensitive outcome is replacement and subsequent execution of the local FigCraft installation, affecting the process and data accessible to that installation. Package-based Linux updates can additionally invoke system package installation through the dependency's root-execution path, subject to operating-system authorization. The scope is therefore not necessarily limited to a single executable in a user-owned directory.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The supported PR-specific concern is incomplete update activation, not a demonstrated arbitrary-code execution or privilege bypass. When an update contains security fixes, the multi-window close mismatch can leave the older process running despite successful installation status. Windows helper timeout recovery limits replacement while the process is alive, but does not repair the live updater's completed state.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The pinned dependency confines release and asset URLs to the configured repository, binds artifact selection to release/version identity, and verifies download size and SHA-256 before installation. These are substitution and integrity controls; a checksum published with release metadata is not an independent publisher signature.
observed — The Windows raw-argument helper has enforcement beyond argument parsing: it checks the helper's cache location, application executable identity, installation kind, download directory, and portable staging location. It verifies Authenticode signatures with matching publisher subject names for the helper/reference, target executable, MSI, and executable content in portable updates, and verifies the restart target again before launch.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The actual dependency rejects manual checks before changing status when installation is active or already completed. While installing, the prompt offers dismissal rather than another installation action; dismissal does not cancel the worker. These controls constrain repeated and concurrent mutation, but completion still relies on a one-shot close request without process-exit acknowledgement.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Represent restart as an application-wide pending transition distinct from viewport closure. Preserve session-global dirty-work guards, retain restart intent until whole-process shutdown is accepted, and reconcile helper failure before suppressing further installation attempts.

- Line 227: Update the Help menu item dispatch for “Check for updates” to use
menus::invoke instead of app.run, so the "help.checkForUpdates" action reaches
crate::updates_ui::check(app).
Review comments at @crates/ui-egui/src/updates_ui.rs:
- Around line 39-42: Update the manual-check flow around start_check so it opens
the manual window while the update check is pending, allowing the “Checking for
updates…” state to appear. In the Ok(Some(release)) result branch, close the
manual window and clear manual_checked so the found-release state does not
remain alongside the startup prompt.
- Around line 60-70: Replace both update-checking std::thread::spawn calls with
named, fallible thread spawns and handle spawn errors without panicking. On
failure, reset checking and rx, and report the error only for a manual check;
preserve the startup check’s non-crashing behavior.
- Around line 82-86: Handle both outcomes of `rx.try_recv()` in the update-check
polling flow: keep the pending state for an empty channel, and treat a
disconnected channel as a completed check with an unexpected-stop error. Update
the surrounding `completed` handling so the result is surfaced and the checking
state can reset, allowing later calls to `start_check`.
- Line 129: Update the self-update flow around `prompt.is_installing` to send
the thread’s success or failure result back to the UI thread through a channel.
Handle failures from `Http::new`, `Paths::for_app`, `Platform::current`, and
`self_update::update` on the UI thread by resetting `is_installing` and setting
`prompt.status_message`; preserve the existing unsupported-install status
behavior.
- Around line 177-179: Replace the updater-thread process exit with delivery of
the successful update result to the UI thread, where the normal close flow can
run. Keep the `last` callback from permitting replacement until that flow
completes, and return an error if the user cancels so the update does not
proceed.
- Line 47: Convert the translated message assigned to
app.updates_rt.status_message in the wasm32 branch to an owned String so it
matches the Option<String> type.

The update flow (check at start or on request, the startup prompt, the self-update worker) is craft-update's Updater; the app only supplies the suite, its close path and its status window. The check at start is opt-in for the desktop app, an install holds back while documents are unsaved, and the Windows update helper runs before argument parsing.
Ref: storytold/craft-libs#319
Wake the UI when a manual check is queued from a menu callback; the update prompt owns the keyboard while it is open (LightCraft); Download opens through the desktop URL hook (FilmCraft); the Help menu dispatches through menus::invoke (FigCraft); print jobs and comment drafts hold an install back (WordCraft); Check for Updates is a registered command (GridCraft); an install holds back while documents are unsaved.
