M11: widgets take text input and a property menu (plugin API 4) - #1365
Gap 6: plugin widgets did nothing but take clicks. Now a widget can have editable text fields and a small property menu. Plugins written for API 1–3 and widgets already in files work as before.
What changed
Plugin API 4 (crates/plugin). API_VERSION goes from 3 to 4. There are no new host imports. The widget description gains two keys:
field on a text layer: the text becomes an editable field.
menu beside root: up to 8 items. Each is an action, a toggle with checked, or a color with 1–8 options and a current value.
Everything is validated as untrusted input: item names are checked like target names and must be unique, labels are at most 32 characters with no control characters, colours are normalised and the value must be one of the options, and field is allowed on text layers only. clean_field limits field values to 1,000 characters, keeps line breaks, turns tabs into spaces and drops other control characters.
Why the version bump. A FigCraft that runs an older API refuses a manifest asking for API 4 when it's imported, so a plugin that needs fields or menus fails clearly instead of silently losing them. On this host, an API 3 plugin whose description uses a field or a menu is refused with "fields and menus need plugin API 4". API 3 descriptions without them work unchanged.
Engine (crates/engine/src/widgets.rs). Two new commands, each one undo step, metered and run in a fresh sandbox like clicks:
widget.setText {id, field, value, fuel?}: writes the cleaned value into the widget's state under the field's name and into the field's text, then calls the plugin back with event: {field, value}. A plugin that doesn't redraw still keeps and shows the value. A failing or runaway callback rolls everything back.
widget.menu {id, item, value?, fuel?}: an action sends null. A toggle takes true or false and defaults to the opposite of its current state. A colour must be one of the item's options (any case).
The menu is stored in the widget's own layer data (figcraft.widget.menu, which plugins can't write) and is re-validated whenever it's read, so a broken or forged menu from a file or a peer reads as no menu. widget.insert, the callbacks and widget.list now also return fields and menu.
Canvas.
Double-clicking a widget's field with the Move tool starts normal text editing on it, with all the text selected.
When editing ends (textedit::end: Escape, a click elsewhere, text.edit.end), the typing is put back and the value goes through widget.setText. That is exactly one undo step, or none if the text didn't change. A failure shows its message and leaves the field as it was.
UI (crates/ui-egui/src/widget_bar.rs). When a widget with a menu is the only layer selected, a small bar floats over it. It reuses the board bar's placement, divider and swatches. Actions and toggles are text buttons (a toggle is filled when on), colours are swatches with a ring on the current one, and each one runs widget.menu. It has accessibility roles (button or toggle) and is hidden while dragging, while editing text and in read-only files. The labels are the plugin's own text, so there are no new UI strings.
Command labels.widget.setText and widget.menu have labels in every catalog with a [commands] table. English comes from the engine, and the es-419 overlay falls back to es.
SDK and example.
Widget gains field, menu and value.
The Counter example (now API 4, version 1.1.0) has a label field (it shows a placeholder when empty) and a menu: Reset, "Steps of 10" (a toggle) and a colour for the count. It is built by the existing cargo xtask plugins step, and no binaries are committed.
Docs. Updated docs/plugins.md (widgets section, command table, ABI v4, description keys, limits, SDK, Counter, Not yet), docs/mcp.md, gap 6 in docs/gaps.md, the plugins and ecosystem rows in docs/target-app-parity.md, ROADMAP.md (numbers, progress log, revision history, status line) and the M11 row in docs/roadmap.md. Plugins & widgets goes from 60%/35% to 65%/38%, and its estimate from 8–26 h to 6–22 h.
Tests
crates/plugin:
Fields and menus are normalised.
18 kinds of junk menus and fields are refused.
clean_field cleans and bounds values.
The API version checks were moved up to API 5.
crates/engine/src/widget_input_tests.rs:
A field edit reaches the state, the layer and the plugin as one undo step, and undoes.
Six kinds of bad edits are refused.
A runaway or failing callback rolls the value back.
Menu toggles, colours (in any case) and actions call back with the right values, and bad items and values are refused.
An action whose redraw drops the menu leaves nothing to choose, and undo brings the menu back.
An API 3 plugin drawing a field is refused and rolled back.
Forged or junk menu data (including deeply nested JSON) reads as no menu.
A double-click on the canvas edits the field: ending with no change makes no step, typing makes one step, and a missing plugin leaves the field as it was with a message.
A field edit syncs in a live session.
The junk-parameter sweep has two new entries for fields, items and values.
SDK and Counter unit tests cover the new events and the menu logic.
Verified
Desktop app (control channel, port 45311, pref.publishServer {url: ""} sent first, plugin imported for the session only with {manifest, wasm}):
Inserted the Counter; the menu bar shows over the selected widget.
Double-clicked the label, typed "Score" and pressed Escape: the state holds label: "Score".
Clicked the green swatch, "Steps of 10" and "+" in the app: the state became {big: true, color: "#14AE5C", count: 10}, and the buttons read −10/+10.
Four Cmd+Z presses undid the four steps one at a time.
MCP (figcraft-cli mcp): import, insert, widget.setText, widget.click, widget.menu (toggle, colour in lower case, a refused colour), a refused field, widget.list, the reset action and edit.undo all behaved as expected.
In a second run, the bar showed a ring on the current colour (05-colour-ring.png). A widget scrolled out of view no longer draws the bar over the tab strip (06-offscreen.png). This fix was found and made during verification.
Web: the wasm check for the engine, UI and web crates passes (part of cargo xtask ci).
Gate:cargo +1.99.0 xtask ci exited 0. After it, the out-of-view check (4 lines in widget_bar.rs) was added and only cargo fmt --check and clippy -p figcraft-ui-egui -D warnings were re-run on that change.
Not done
Hover callbacks (the optional third part) are not implemented. They're listed under "Not yet" in docs/plugins.md and under gap 6's Missing.
A field has no placeholder, length or single-line setting: Enter inserts a line break, and the plugin draws its own placeholder.
The menu bar wasn't checked in the light theme, at small zoom levels, or with a very wide menu (8 long labels could make a bar wider than a narrow canvas).
Not run on macOS or Linux, and the web build was compiled but not opened in a browser.
Main merged in after #698 (plugins saving files): plugin API 4 now covers both saveFile and widget fields and property menus, and docs/plugins.md describes them together. Full cargo xtask ci passes on the merged branch.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Plugin widgets now support editable text fields and property menus with actions, toggles, and color choices.
Double-click a field to edit it, or use the selected widget’s menu on the canvas. Changes are grouped into undo steps.
The example counter widget includes an editable label, reset and step-size actions, and color options.
Compatibility
These features require plugin API 4. Fields are limited to 1,000 characters, and menus support up to 8 items.
Plugin API 4 (gap 6). A widget's text layer can be an editable field:
a double-click edits it like any text, and when editing ends the value
(cleaned, at most 1,000 characters) goes into the widget's state under
the field's name and its plugin redraws, as one undo step. A widget can
also carry a property menu of up to 8 actions, toggles and colour
choices, shown in a small bar over it while it's selected.
- widget.setText and widget.menu drive the same paths from scripts,
the CLI and MCP; widget.insert/list also report fields and menu
- descriptions, values and stored menus are validated as untrusted;
an API 3 plugin drawing a field or menu is refused, older hosts
refuse API 4 manifests; no new host imports
- SDK reads the new events; the Counter example gains a label field
and a menu (reset, steps of ten, a colour)
- tests for fields, menus, canvas editing, rollback, forged data and
live sync; junk sweep extended; labels in every command catalog
- docs: plugins, mcp, gaps, target-app-parity, ROADMAP, roadmap
Plugin API 4 adds editable text fields and property menus to widgets. The engine validates and processes field and menu events, the canvas displays menus for selected widgets, and the SDK and counter example support the new event data.

Widget descriptions add editable text fields and action, toggle, and color menu items. Validation enforces field and menu limits, and SDK widget events include field, menu, and value data. Documentation describes the commands, event payloads, and API version requirements.
The engine stores and reports widget fields and menus. widget.setText cleans and validates field values; widget.menu validates actions, toggles, and color choices. Canvas text edits dispatch changed values as undoable widget events. Tests cover validation, callbacks, undo, and live-session synchronization.
Canvas property menu crates/ui-egui/src/widget_bar.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/locales/*
The canvas displays a floating property menu when one eligible widget is selected. Color swatches, toggle buttons, and action buttons send their selected values through widget.menu. Locales add labels for the menu and field-edit commands.
API 4 counter example plugins/examples/counter/figcraft-plugin.json, plugins/examples/counter/src/lib.rs, docs/plugins.md
The counter example adds an editable label and a menu for reset, step-size, and color choices. It persists the label and counter state and tests the menu actions and rendering.
Roadmap and parity updates ROADMAP.md, docs/gaps.md, docs/roadmap.md, docs/target-app-parity.md
The documents record API 4 widget support and revise plugin readiness and remaining-work estimates.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to fc7e5
Resolve the Dev Mode editing bypass and interaction regressions before merging; also correct the stale parity estimate.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to fc7e5
The new controls retain the existing plugin execution limits and document rollback behavior. However, property-menu actions can change a design while Inspect mode is active. This is a bounded integrity-control regression, not evidence of broader access or privilege escalation.
Retained concerns
Low · security · observed: The new property-menu bar remains actionable in Inspect mode and directly invokes widget.menu, allowing a plugin callback to change the design without switching to Design mode. Existing canvas widget interactions explicitly honor Dev Mode. The bar's collaboration read-only check does not enforce this mode boundary. This affects the current user's editable document; it is not a collaboration-access bypass.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The introduced Inspect-mode exposure requires selecting a widget backed by an installed plugin and activating its menu in an otherwise editable document. Declarative redraws remain confined to the owning widget; other callback effects retain the plugin's existing host permissions. The inspected change does not establish cross-tenant or new host-level authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — A plugin supplies the selected widget's menu. A user activates an item while Inspect mode is active; the new bar calls FigApp.run directly, which forwards to Session.execute. The menu callback can return a render that changes the widget. Neither the bar's collaboration-access check nor this dispatch path enforces the canvas Dev Mode edit restriction.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Plugin output crosses validation before materialization. Callback execution uses the existing metered instance and manifest-authorized host interface. Widget ownership is rechecked before rebuild, and nested widget/document authority remains restricted by the existing plugin command refusal policy.
observed — Live document authorization occurs after command execution and restores rejected document mutations. Plugin settings and other non-document effects are outside that document snapshot. This ordering and callback authority predate the PR through widget.click; they are not established here as a newly introduced or worsened security condition.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The new property-menu entrypoint and existing canvas interactions apply different mode controls, creating integrity-control drift. Undo and callback-failure rollback limit recovery cost but do not prevent successful changes made while inspecting.

Reject API 3 field edits in widget.setText.
node.set can add figcraft.widget.field to a text layer inside an existing API 3 widget. widget.setText then accepts that field, updates the layer text and widget state, and invokes the API 3 plugin. The callback guard checks only fields and menus returned by the plugin, so an unchanged API 3 render does not reject the interaction.
Gate widget.setText on the plugin manifest API before applying the edit.

In Dev Mode, show can draw the bar for a selected widget, and a click runs widget.menu. The bar checks only tool.busy() and active_read_only(). active_read_only() does not check Dev Mode. Menus and shortcuts refuse design edits in Dev Mode through dev_mode_refuses, but app.run calls session.execute directly and has no such check. A user in Dev Mode can therefore edit the design by clicking a bar item.

Preserve the active field-edit session on a second double-click.
When a field is already being edited, this call to textedit::begin selects all its text and replaces its editing session. A double-click cannot select a word, and the session change can interrupt an active IME composition. Check whether the field is already being edited. If it is, use text_index_at and textedit::select_word, as the ordinary-text path does at Lines 2185-2192.

Gap 6: plugin widgets did nothing but take clicks. Now a widget can have editable text fields and a small property menu. Plugins written for API 1–3 and widgets already in files work as before.
What changed
Plugin API 4 (
crates/plugin).API_VERSIONgoes from 3 to 4. There are no new host imports. The widget description gains two keys:fieldon a text layer: the text becomes an editable field.menubesideroot: up to 8 items. Each is anaction, atogglewithchecked, or acolorwith 1–8optionsand a currentvalue.Everything is validated as untrusted input: item names are checked like target names and must be unique, labels are at most 32 characters with no control characters, colours are normalised and the value must be one of the options, and
fieldis allowed on text layers only.clean_fieldlimits field values to 1,000 characters, keeps line breaks, turns tabs into spaces and drops other control characters.
Engine (
crates/engine/src/widgets.rs). Two new commands, each one undo step, metered and run in a fresh sandbox like clicks:widget.setText {id, field, value, fuel?}: writes the cleaned value into the widget's state under the field's name and into the field's text, then calls the plugin back withevent: {field, value}. A plugin that doesn't redraw still keeps and shows the value. A failing or runaway callback rolls everything back.widget.menu {id, item, value?, fuel?}: an action sendsnull. A toggle takestrueorfalseand defaults to the opposite of its current state. A colour must be one of the item's options (any case). The menu is stored in the widget's own layer data (
figcraft.widget.menu, which plugins can't write) and is re-validated whenever it's read, so a broken or forged menu from a file or a peer reads as no menu.widget.insert, the callbacks andwidget.listnow also returnfieldsandmenu.Canvas.
textedit::end: Escape, a click elsewhere,text.edit.end), the typing is put back and the value goes throughwidget.setText. That is exactly one undo step, or none if the text didn't change. A failure shows its message and leaves the field as it was.UI (
crates/ui-egui/src/widget_bar.rs). When a widget with a menu is the only layer selected, a small bar floats over it. It reuses the board bar's placement, divider and swatches. Actions and toggles are text buttons (a toggle is filled when on), colours are swatches with a ring on the current one, and each one runswidget.menu. It has accessibility roles (button or toggle) and is hidden while dragging, while editing text and in read-only files. The labels are the plugin's own text, so there are no new UI strings.Command labels.
widget.setTextandwidget.menuhave labels in every catalog with a[commands]table. English comes from the engine, and the es-419 overlay falls back to es.SDK and example.
