What this changes

A drop-down (combo box) now looks like one, and its list behaves like a form's own list rather than the app's menu.

On main:

  • No arrow: a combo box's page appearance shows only its value, so a drop-down looks like a text box until it is clicked.
  • The app's menu as the list: the list is the app's popup menu, dark in dark mode, headed by the field's internal name (Departure_Authority_Time_Chargeable), in the interface's text size and at least 160 px wide whatever the field's width.
  • Keys: the list takes no arrow keys, while ↓/↑, Home and End still scroll the page under it.

DA Form 31 (Request and Authority for Leave, a public blank form) is a real-world case, found while filling it. Its 14b and 16b TIME fields are drop-downs of 24 times, and another viewer draws them with an arrow and a list like the field (black-box, viewed locally).

No existing issue (searched for drop-down arrow, combo box list and choice list).

Now

  • The arrow: every combo box that can be filled shows a black ▼ at the right of its box. It is drawn on screen only, like the field highlights, and nothing is written to the file. Too narrow a box keeps its value visible instead.
  • The list opens directly under the field, as wide as its box. Its items are in the field's text size and aligned as the field aligns its text, centered for 14b. It is black on white with a black border (white in dark mode too, as the form is), without the field's name.
  • Highlight: a blue highlight follows the pointer as it moves and starts on the field's value. A pointer resting on the list doesn't take the highlight back from the keys, even when they scroll the list under it.
  • Scroll bar: more than nine items get a classic one, with ▲/▼ step buttons, a thumb sized to the share shown that can be dragged, and a track that pages. The wheel scrolls the list, not the page.
  • Keys: ↓/↑, Page Up/Down, Home and End move the highlight, Enter chooses it, and Esc closes the list, as before.
  • The page stays put: while a form field is open, the page shortcuts leave the arrows, Page Up/Down, Home and End to it. This also fixes list boxes, whose ↑/↓ used to move the selection and scroll the page together.
Before (main) After
Before: the app's dark menu, headed by the field's name After: an arrow on the field; a white list as wide as the field, centered items, a blue highlight under the pointer and a scroll bar with step buttons

(The repository's test form, crates/ui-egui/tests/data/form.pdf, with its country drop-down given 24 items and centered text, dark theme, the pointer on the third row. Headless, at 200% interface scale.)

Not changed

  • The list's font is the interface's sans-serif, the one the field editors already use, not the field's own (Times, say). No serif interface font ships, and fonts come from craft-fonts.
  • Editable combo boxes still take a choice from the list only, as on main.
  • Date fields get no calendar button. The calendar still opens with the field.
  • Type-ahead (a letter jumps to the first item that starts with it).

Evidence

  • DA Form 31 in the desktop app, built from this branch: 14b and 16b show the arrow. 14b's list matches another viewer's in place, width, alignment, highlight and scroll bar (black-box, viewed locally): it opens at the chosen time, the wheel and the bar scroll it, and each ↓ moves one row with the page still.
  • List boxes keep their arrow keys and no longer scroll the page.

How you verified it

New tests, each seen failing first. The first two failed on main. The others failed against this branch's earlier rounds, which are why they exist: the highlight jumped two rows when ↓ also scrolled the page, and the wheel didn't scroll the list.

Test Failed with Passes with

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic!/unreachable!/todo! outside tests
  • No indexing: items through options.get, and the scroll position is clamped to the items (an empty list draws an empty box)
  • No division by zero: the thumb's travel is at least 1 px, and the bar is drawn only when there is something to scroll
  • No unsafe
  • (No crash fixed here)

Provenance

  • No asset from an Adobe product, and no Adobe icon recreated, traced or imitated. The arrow, the scroll bar's buttons and its grip are plain triangles and lines drawn in code
  • No font files committed here
  • No GPL/AGPL code copied in
  • Behavior from black-box observation of another viewer's list on a public blank form (its width, item alignment, highlight and scroll bar), with measurements taken from screenshots kept locally; nothing from another implementation's source
  • No new asset. The screenshots above are hosted on my fork, outside the repository, and show only the repository's own test form

Security

  • --root confinement unaffected (no paths involved)
  • MCP and the UI control channel untouched
  • No new outbound network access

Parity and reach

  • parity/acrobat-features.toml, form.fill-choice: the notes now describe the arrow and the list, and that it is drawn in the interface font. The tests for the list and the keys are added to evidence
  • Reachable headlessly: choosing still goes through Edit::SetFieldValue, as form_fill does; this PR changes only how the app shows the choices
  • Docs: no documented behavior changes

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  1. The page shortcuts' early return while forms.focus is set (canvas::shortcuts). Text fields already returned early, because their editor wants keyboard input; this extends that to drop-downs and list boxes, whose items take the arrow keys.
  2. A custom list rather than ScrollArea: its rows, bar and keys are drawn and handled in choice_list and scroll_bar, so the bar can have step buttons and the list can scroll by rows. Each row still reports itself to accessibility as a selectable label, with its text and selected state.
  3. Related open PR: M14: extend shortcuts and add keyboard navigation #2690 reworks keyboard focus between form fields in the same files. They don't depend on each other, and whichever lands second needs a small merge, which I'll do if it's this one.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Improved combo-box dropdowns with field-width sizing, visible arrows, and lists anchored to their fields.
    • Added keyboard and pointer navigation, option selection, and scrollbar support. Lists show up to nine options at a time and can be scrolled with the mouse wheel.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Page-navigation and scrolling shortcuts no longer move the document when a form field is focused, except for checkboxes and radio buttons.
    • Scrolling an open dropdown no longer moves the surrounding document; scrolling elsewhere on the page still turns pages.

Walkthrough

Combo boxes now display an arrow and use a custom list for option navigation and selection. The list supports pointer, keyboard, wheel, and scrollbar input. Canvas shortcuts leave navigation keys to focused form fields, except checkboxes and radio buttons.

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review db7b3

The selected option fits the auto-sized field, and scrolling the open list does not turn the page. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to db7b3

The change remains confined to form interactions and preserves existing edit-permission checks. The remaining uncertainty is how an open list refreshes when its underlying form changes.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated changed path affects the focused document's form value through existing edit authority. No new cross-document or cross-service authority was identified in that path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Pointer-based field entry retains document permission, field read-only, and widget read-only checks. The new list does not replace the authoritative engine-side write checks.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider invalidating or reconciling transient list indices when the focused field's value or options change. This would strengthen state synchronization; it is not a verified security finding.

Read the source changes in forms_ui.rs, canvas.rs and editing.rs, and the first tests; I skimmed the rest of the new test file.

  • A fillable drop-down now shows an arrow on screen only. It is painted on the overlay, not written into the file, and it is skipped when the box is too narrow.
  • The open list replaces the old popup. It is as wide as the field, uses the field's text size and alignment, and no longer shows the field's internal name. It highlights the item under a moving pointer or the arrow-key item, supports Up, Down, PageUp, PageDown, Home, End and Enter, and has a scroll bar with step buttons, a draggable thumb and page clicks once there are more than nine items.
  • While a field is open, shortcuts returns early so the arrows and paging keys go to the list instead of scrolling the page.

The index arithmetic is clamped throughout (saturating_sub, min(n - 1), max_first), an empty list is handled, and the scroll bar draws nothing when everything fits. CI is green on this head.

Thanks for this, the drop-down arrow and the list are a clear improvement and the PR description is thorough about what is and is not changed.

I read the diff for panics, layering and confinement and found nothing blocking: the list code has no input-derived indexing, n - 1 is behind the n == 0 check, the float-to-usize casts are clamped, and there is no new asset, font, network or unsafe use. The new tests cover each behaviour, and the parity entry says what is still missing (interface font, no type-ahead).

Optional follow-ups:

  1. crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs (the new early return in shortcuts): it also skips the Escape branch below it while any form field is open. If Escape in an open list is fully handled by forms_ui this is fine; a short test that Escape closes the list and leaves a page selection alone would pin that down.
  2. crates/ui-egui/src/forms_ui.rs choice_list: the white/black/blue colours are hard-coded rather than taken from Tokens. That matches the "as the form is" intent, but a one-line comment saying so would help the next reader.

Thank you for the careful review, @benandez. Both done in 5d2b0bc:

  1. Your Escape point found a real regression. The page's Escape handling runs above that early return. With egui's popup, an open list made it step aside, but my custom list doesn't, so one Escape closed the list and also the find bar (or cleared a selection). Escape now leaves page actions alone while a field is open. escape_closes_an_open_drop_downs_list_and_leaves_the_page_alone, seen failing first, pins it down.
  2. Added a comment in choice_list saying the colors are fixed on purpose, so the list looks like the form's own in both themes.

The on-screen drop-down button for combo boxes drawn display-only, the
narrowed text area beside it, and the Print as Image copy without it
(with_printed_field_appearances, printed_display_bytes) are removed.
Open PR storytold#3567 draws the arrow for every combo box in the page view.
Check boxes, radio buttons, push buttons and comb lines are unchanged.
