M7: preserve paragraph frames when resizing upright and rotated text - #4190
Resizing an existing paragraph preserves its chosen width and height independently of glyph bounds, including text at arbitrary angles. Words wrap along the baseline and remain visible outside the chosen height. Frame dimensions persist through typing, movement, undo/redo and save/reopen. Refs #3474.
The four edge handles follow paragraph orientation, document/view rotation, crop box and UserUnit. Dragging projects onto the local text axis; moving the left edge moves the text along its baseline. Typing uses a horizontal editor while Apply retains the PDF angle. Automation exposes editing_quad, ink rect and frame editing_rect; width/height use local axes and height is anchored at the local top.
Height-only edits change nonpainting metadata while preserving source operators, kerning, row breaks, colours and invisible OCR. Mixed-state rotated reflow is refused before mutation. Partial formatting and document-font selection for rotated paragraphs remain unsupported.
The reviewed paint comparison ignores only source offsets of identical fill/stroke operators on comparison copies, retaining the other state properties, original provenance and the TD-leading exception (CodeRabbit finding). Effective tm × ctm scale/shear differences are also refused before mutation, including differences inside one extracted line; translations and equivalent transform compositions remain valid (CodeRabbit finding).
Integration with current main
Integrated with f137a289baadefbd29e0e46930899896068cc41d (PdfCraft 0.16.1). The page input integration uses main's captured router ownership for presses and drags, alongside layered cursor claims; Escape cancellation retains the captured-gesture rules.
The rewrite keeps /PCTextFrame geometry alongside main's /P paragraph boundaries and /PCSoft//PCHard row markers. Width-only edits use reflow_text: soft wraps rejoin with their recorded separator count, including multiple spaces or zero for a split CJK word; typed breaks remain newlines. Main's alignment handling, including its rejection of selected-row alignment for existing paragraphs until that intent can persist, is retained. Added-text alignment behavior remains main's.
Unmarked soft-wrap inference now measures frame_row_rect and ink_frame along the baseline, so rotated rows are not judged using the enlarged world-axis bounding box. turned_source_rows_infer_soft_wraps_along_their_baseline covers upright, vertical and oblique rows, hard breaks, height metadata and reopen. width_only_reflows_existing_paragraph_rows_through_tools distinguishes soft, hard and short unmarked rows.
Cargo manifests and Cargo.lock match incoming main exactly, including craft-libs c5a1cbfb5f9049f9270955caffb5bee5997aebf7. The merged craft-libs #366 correction is retained without a temporary dependency adjustment. CI workflows are unchanged relative to main.
Frame interaction and compatibility
The shared paragraph_ink_contains hit test projects ink_frame into local screen axes, requires valid geometry and finite, positive ink bounds, and retains a two-screen-pixel tolerance. Empty corners of the rotated ink AABB do not steal image clicks or drags. Reserved frame space, grips, clipping, modifiers, captured drag origins and Escape cancellation retain their intended behavior; actual text ink takes precedence over background artwork.
The rewrite records requested_justify before inheriting saved frame alignment. A new request to justify a mixed-style existing paragraph remains unsupported; later editing of an already justified frame retains its source spacing. Main's regression now checks one paragraph, its 300-point frame, justified alignment and unscaled text after editing. The equivalent styled_run_state refactor preserves range-over-paragraph override precedence, source scaling and calibration only for unshaped runs.
Modifier selection and group drag origins resolve Added objects from current inventory placement after page rotation or cropping. object_ui::hit uses that placement during additive selection and while a group is active. Mixed selection's beneath candidates exclude the ordinary placed hit whose saved display box can be stale; the central router retains it for ordinary content interaction. This preserves group drags from source text and Added members without letting an obsolete Added box move remote selected text when the pointer is over unselected artwork.
How you verified it
Current integration validation — 2026-10-31, Windows x64 / Rust 1.95:
Scoped native composite: 3,054 passed, 0 remaining failures, 9 existing ignored — automation 45 unit + 314 integration; edit 393; engine 392 unit + 16 integration; UI 607 unit + 1,283 integration + three performance + one play.
The full run passed 3,053 tests and failed only play; correcting the test harness's handle target from ink rect to editing_rect (production and JSON expectations unchanged) made the scoped play rerun pass, yielding the composite total above.
Formatting and scoped all-target Clippy with -D warnings passed. Layers passed for 37 crates; assets passed with 289 repository, six dependency and 22 build assets; parity passed with main's 100 existing headless notices.
Scoped edit/engine/automation/UI wasm32-unknown-unknown checks passed, retaining five renderer and nine UI platform warnings plus three optional egui patch notices.
Two fresh GPU regressions passed separately (1 passed, 0 failed each), covering oriented frames and rotated-ink/image precedence. Both captures were inspected and show the expected geometry.
A fresh CLI build and two synthetic exercises passed: a 30-degree 90-by-10 frame survives typing and save/reopen with three visible rows and overflow; 30-degree TD-positioned text retains a 28-point width and four rows after retyping and save/reopen. Both rendered outputs were inspected with system fonts disabled, confirming all text remains visible.
The passing native coverage includes turned-baseline soft-wrap inference; soft/hard/unmarked automation; Escape during rotated width/height drags; image presses in rotated ink AABB corners; the strengthened 300-point justified frame; group drags from source text and Added members on every page rotation; and stale Added metadata over unselected artwork, asserting no remote-text movement or Move objects undo entry. Observed RED controls had reproduced incorrect vertical wrapping, stolen image clicks, saved-justification refusal and group-selection/drag failures before their respective corrections.
Runs used exact CI font input b076417b5880bd4154bd22f00695b1d28c6bea83, with system fonts disabled, two build jobs, debug symbols omitted and incremental compilation disabled.
Historical evidence, 2026-10-29 only: the previous 0.15 integration recorded 2,837 passing scoped tests, its gates and inspected CLI/GPU exercises; later paint and transform follow-ups recorded RED/GREEN regressions and edit suites of 313 and 318 passing tests. These records apply to those earlier revisions.
Never-crash and fidelity
Finite geometry, dimensions and transforms are checked before mutation; invalid or degenerate UI geometry is inert. Private frame segments retain their enclosing CTM; reading checks the actual baseline and measures overflow locally. Height-only wrappers respect text, graphics, compatibility and marked-content boundaries, and cannot expand to claim unrelated text. TD-positioned rotated rows retain source leading.
Provenance, security and reach
No new binary assets, fonts, product network/path access or control permissions. Existing overflow translations and attribution remain. Engine/automation APIs, UI tests, guidance, roadmaps and parity evidence accompany the feature. The contributor's public GitHub-name opt-in was explicitly authorized; only their own entry is added, preserving all incoming credits.
Anything a reviewer should look at first
TextBlock::ink_frame and editing_frame() use baseline coordinates; editing_quad() returns page-space BL/BR/TR/TL corners in text-local order. Ink rect remains separate from the frame AABB. Review the pre-mutation paint/transform guards, saved-justification handling and current-placement group routing. Mixed-state rotated reflow remains restricted; height-only edits preserve source painting.

@enriquemelzer-bit Hi! A friendly heads-up from #4180 (aligning selected lines of a paragraph on their own). Resizable frames, rotated text included, are a great addition, and it's really nice to see two of us improving paragraph editing at the same time.
CodeRabbit linked our PRs, but neither depends on the other: this PR doesn't use #4180's alignment data. They do touch the same code, though. A trial merge of the two branches conflicts in four files:

Measured this branch (6e60d54) against main for the handle complaints in #2203, with a kittest probe: an upright one-line paragraph, a press at each offset from its drawn right edge (middle, near the top, near the bottom), recording the hover cursor and what a 40×25 px drag then did. Both builds gave identical results:

So in this case the cursor always matches the gesture, and a resize drag never moves the paragraph diagonally. What users read as "the resize cursor shows but it won't resize" is a width edit on text that already fits: an Edit text step that changes nothing visible, because the drawn box follows the glyphs. Keeping the chosen frame independent of the glyph bounds, as this PR does, is what makes that resize visible. (The probe measured TextBlock::rect, so it didn't check this branch's editing_rect itself.)
The other complaint, handles being hard to catch, is the ±6 px grab zone around the edge (EDGE_REACH). I'm proposing a small separate change to widen it slightly; it touches only that constant, so it shouldn't overlap with this PR beyond that line.

Formatting, strict Clippy, layers/assets/parity, scoped wasm and a fresh CLI build passed. Both rotated-frame and TD-specific save/reopen/render exercises passed, and their renders were inspected. saved_frame checks style.width. On the alignment path, style is the framed copy that alignment_frame built. When a single-row paragraph is aligned and no column is found, alignment_frame returns Some(own) for an unchanged draft. The rewrite then saves a PCTextFrame as wide as the row's own ink.
Its doc comment says the opposite. It states that this own box "is no width for new text to wrap at." After this change, the next edit reads block.horizontal_frame. frame_style then inserts width = right - left, so longer text wraps at the old row width instead of growing.

rewrite_styled_block receives the same framed style, so paragraph_frame has the same problem.

I built on this PR rather than opening a competing implementation, refreshed it onto main 0.17 (d338434), and added inline frame controls for upright paragraphs.
The open editor now has accessible left/right width grips and a move bar. Typing and geometry apply together as one undoable edit; Escape retains the unapplied draft, and failed edits reuse the existing draft-restoration path. Controls sit outside the text, follow its visible frame, and respect page clipping. Rotated paragraphs keep this PR’s closed-frame controls. Existing text_edit width/dx/dy provide the headless path.
Validation on macOS: 3,350 scoped edit/engine/automation/UI tests passed (9 ignored). After the final visual adjustment, all 1,378 UI integration tests passed again, alongside strict all-target Clippy, wasm, layers/assets/parity. All 256 editing tests pass. Before/after GPU captures of the open frame and widened result were inspected with system fonts disabled and CI craft-fonts b076417. The draft-width regression reproduced the failure before the new controls; current coverage also checks movement, cancellation, one-step undo and save/reopen.
Integration fixes retain main’s strip_subset_tag export and new mixed-format tests, use an actual synthetic raster for the crop conservation test (main now refuses cropping Form artwork), and locate translated Preferences/Settings in the correct macOS application menu. Never-crash and fidelity
Finite geometry, dimensions and transforms are checked before mutation; invalid or degenerate UI geometry is inert. Private frame segments retain their enclosing CTM; reading checks the actual baseline and measures overflow locally. Height-only wrappers respect text, graphics, compatibility and marked-content boundaries, and cannot expand to claim unrelated text. TD-positioned rotated rows retain source leading.
