Builds on #4511: its commits are included here until it merges. This PR's own change is the last commit.

What this changes

An XFA date field showed its value in its edit pattern, or in yyyy-mm-dd when it has no edit picture, even when the template gives it a display picture (<format><picture>). DA 31, for instance, has:

  • 25 date fields with only a date{YYYYMMDD} display picture: they showed 2026-10-24 where another viewer shows 20261024;
  • 4 fields with date{EEEE, MMMM D, YYYY};
  • 1 field with date{YYYYMMMDD}.

The layout now gives a date widget the display picture's date letters (Widget::display_date, weekday and month names included, through the existing date_letters). The generated field's format action uses them, while its keystroke action keeps the edit picture's pattern. With #4511's XFA-date semantics, a value is shown in the display picture when it is a date, in the edit pattern already or as ISO, and as typed otherwise.

The datasets reader and writer (date_pattern_of) take the pattern a value is kept in from the keystroke action, the edit picture's, since the format action now names the display picture. For files laid out before this change they fall back to the format action, which named the same pattern. Without this, a value kept as typed (10/18/2016 in a field displayed MM/DD/YYYY with no edit picture) would have been converted to an ISO date in the data, where another viewer keeps the text. #4511's data test caught it.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings and tests on pdfcraft-xfa, pdfcraft-forms, pdfcraft-engine and pdfcraft-automation.
  • automation::xfa_date_fields_show_typed_dates_through_their_display_picture: three fields (display picture only; edit and display; two edit alternatives with a display picture) × six typed values, checking what the page shows against what another viewer showed for the same typing on a synthetic form. With the change reverted it fails: 2016-10-18 in display shows 2016-10-18, not 10/18/2016.
  • xfa::tests::date_fields_are_shown_through_their_display_picture: the widget's display letters, and each generated field's format and keystroke actions, including a weekday and month-name picture and a field with no display picture. It also fails with the change reverted.
  • forms::af::tests::an_xfa_date_field_splits_a_two_digit_years_century_at_30 and automation::xfa_date_fields_show_two_digit_years_with_the_century_split_of_30: a two-digit year in the edit pattern is shown with XFA's century split of 30 (18OCT29 is 2029, 18OCT30 is 1930, and the data's 1945-10-18 shows as 10/18/1945). Both fail without the change: 18OCT30 shows as 2030, and the data's 1945 as 10/18/2045.
  • xfa::tests::a_date_field_without_a_keystroke_action_keeps_its_data_in_the_format_pattern: a date field with a format action but no keystroke action keeps its data in the format action's pattern. It fails with that fallback removed.

Never-crash

  • No new panics, indexing or unsafe; an unreadable display picture falls back to the edit pattern

Provenance

  • XFA picture clauses from the XFA specification; behaviour checked black-box on a synthetic form

Security

  • --root confinement: no file paths are read or written by this change.
  • MCP and the UI control channel are untouched.
  • No new outbound network access.

Parity and reach

  • parity/acrobat-features.toml and crates/xfa/README.md say dates are shown through the display picture
  • Headless: what form_fill leaves on the page, as the test reads it

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  • A field with no picture at all still shows yyyy-mm-dd, where the other viewer uses its locale's default (Oct 18, 2016 for en_US). That's left out here.
  • Two-digit years. A two-digit year in the edit pattern is shown with XFA's century split of 30 (XFA 3.3, chapter 26, Picture Clause Reference, p. 1171). Ordinary AcroForm date fields keep AFDate's split at 50. M12: XFA date pictures read a two-digit year with the century split of 30 #5074 makes the data side read at 30 too; until it merges, a typed 30 to 49 shows as 19xx while the data keeps 20xx.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of XFA date fields: values that don’t match a field’s date pattern remain as entered, while interpretable dates are shown using the field’s display pattern.
    • Date fields use their edit pattern to interpret input and their display pattern to format shown values. When no display pattern is set, the edit pattern is used for display.
    • When XFA forms are converted to static forms, date values are converted to the display pattern where possible.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for date values across fields with different display and edit patterns, including fields without a picture.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review ba194

Date conversion is mergeable with a bounded test-coverage follow-up: the stripped default value should also be asserted to protect against a future regression.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to ba194

The inspected changes remain confined to date handling in the document being edited. No new privilege or executable-input path was established. Compatibility when converting preserved date text to static fields remains the main uncertainty.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The examined attacker-controlled inputs are date pictures and values within an opened document. Their demonstrated effects are field acceptance, stored/default values, displayed text, and static conversion. The traced flow establishes no additional service, tenant, credential, or host authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The newly connected display-picture input passes through date_letters before interpolation into AFDate_FormatEx. Its whitelist excludes quotes, backslashes, and control characters, blocking action-string breakout through this inspected layout path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The changed engine path normalizes alternate date input before a single form-setter invocation. Dataset synchronization must succeed before commit; the prior document is retained in undo state, and refresh failure restores it. These controls contain partial document-state changes on the examined engine path, without establishing atomic recovery for every low-level caller.

Gate and SonarCloud are green at 872e3a6. I read the full non-test diff. Generated XFA date fields now carry PCXfaDate, shown through the display picture (AFDate_FormatEx) and typed in the edit pattern (AFDate_KeystrokeEx); Actions::keystroke keeps unreadable text as typed only for those fields, and format_value shows a date only when the value is already in the pattern or is a strict ISO date, so ordinary date fields keep the old refusal. The run_edit change runs typed_date first, which fixes the 18OCT16 misread, and is limited to laid-out XFA forms. DATE_KEY is stripped with the other private keys. date_pattern_of prefers the keystroke pattern and falls back to the format one, so earlier output still works. No defects found.

Gate and SonarCloud are green at 2832d3c. I re-read the change since 872e3a6. The new edit_date is set only for XFA date fields whose AFDate_KeystrokeEx pattern differs from the display pattern, keystroke checks against that edit pattern, and format_value reads a value with the edit pattern and writes it in the display pattern, keeping a value already typed in the display pattern as typed (its case too) and still taking an ISO date. A day-first value shown month-first is therefore never misread as a different date, and ordinary date fields are untouched because edit_pattern returns None without the XFA flag. No defects found.

Assert the stripped /DV value.

The fixture has a populated /DV, but this test reads only /V. static_date converts both values, so add an assertion for /DV to cover default-value conversion. This is a test coverage improvement, not a production data-integrity defect.

@coderabbitai The nitpick "Assert the stripped /DV value" (crates/xfa/src/tests.rs) was applied in 3c63621: template_default_dates_are_held_in_the_edit_pattern now checks /DV as well as /V after stripping (both 10/11/2016).

Review notes (comment only). I could not reach the primary XFA 3.3 PDF from this machine (the host returns 403), so spec statements below come from secondary Adobe documentation and are marked; there is no Acrobat here, so none of this is an Acrobat comparison.

Ran: this PR's head (includes #4511's commits), cargo test --locked -p pdfcraft-xfa -p pdfcraft-forms -p pdfcraft-engine -j 2: all passed (xfa 131, forms 370, engine 187; 0 failed). I did not run the automation or ui-egui crates.

Matches: showing a value through the field's display picture while the edit picture governs typing is the XFA split between the two (display picture for presentation, edit picture for entry); letting the widget carry the display picture's date letters, including EEEE/MMMM/MMM, fits that. I did not verify the exact 3.3 wording.

Thanks @Harrison-Booth. I've answered the two caveats on #4511 with the 3.3 text. Rule 2 in chapter 4 (p. 163) stores input the edit picture can't canonicalize as entered. The century split defaults to 30 (ch. 26, p. 1171), so main's 50 is wrong. That fix gets its own PR.

You were right to flag the fallback to the format action, too. No test covered it: with the fallback removed, every test in xfa, forms, engine and the automation date tests still passed. a_date_field_without_a_keystroke_action_keeps_its_data_in_the_format_pattern (crates/xfa/src/tests.rs, in 395c644) covers it now. It lays out a date field, takes away its keystroke action, and saves 18/10/2016. The datasets get 2016-10-18, and reading them back shows 18/10/2016. With the fallback removed, the test fails: the data keeps 18/10/2016 as text.
