  • Analyze current velocity calculation implementation and its issues
  • Design new velocity calculation that increases with better performance
  • Implement growth-based velocity model (velocity = base + uptime * acceleration)
  • Add flow state multiplier (1.5x velocity boost when in flow state)
  • Add configurable acceleration and max_velocity parameters
  • Add configuration methods (set_acceleration, set_max_velocity, get_config)
  • Update tests to verify new behavior
  • Document the new velocity semantics in user-facing documentation
  • Code review completed - no issues found
  • Security scan completed - no vulnerabilities found
  • Fix formula documentation in code comment to correctly show flow multiplier application

Summary

Successfully reworked the terminal velocity calculation to address DX concerns:

Before: Inverse model where velocity decreased over time (counterintuitive)
After: Growth-based model where velocity increases over time (intuitive)

Key improvements:

  • ✅ Higher values now indicate better performance
  • ✅ Configurable acceleration and max velocity for different use cases
  • ✅ Explicit flow state multiplier (1.5x boost)
  • ✅ Runtime configuration methods for tuning
  • ✅ Comprehensive documentation with examples
  • ✅ All tests passing
  • ✅ No security vulnerabilities
  • ✅ Fixed formula documentation to accurately reflect implementation

The system now speeds up with higher values as requested, making it intuitive from a DX perspective while maintaining sound business logic.

Greptile Overview

Updated On: 2025-11-04 07:04:30 UTC

Greptile Summary

Refactored velocity calculation from inverse model to growth-based model, making DX more intuitive (higher values = better performance).

Key Changes:

  • Replaced 1.0 / uptime with BASE_VELOCITY + (uptime × acceleration) growth model
  • Added configurable acceleration and max_velocity constructor parameters
  • Implemented runtime tuning methods: set_acceleration(), set_max_velocity(), get_config()
  • Flow state now applies explicit 1.5× multiplier to velocity
  • Enhanced get_status() to include configuration details
  • Removed redundant start_time truthiness check

Documentation:

  • Added comprehensive model documentation with API reference, examples, and migration guide
  • Created quick reference guide for common usage patterns
  • All examples align with custom instruction 27ed2366 for intuitive velocity semantics

Issues Found:

  • Minor formula documentation mismatch in docstring (line 63) - formula description needs correction to match implementation order of operations

Confidence Score: 4/5

  • Safe to merge with one minor docstring correction needed
  • Implementation is solid with proper validation, configurable parameters, and backward-compatible API. The refactor successfully addresses the custom instruction requirement for intuitive velocity semantics. Documentation is comprehensive and well-structured. Only issue is a minor formula mismatch in the docstring that should be corrected for accuracy.
  • src/fsl_continuum/continuum/terminal_velocity.py - Fix docstring formula on line 63

Pull Request Overview

This PR refactors the Terminal Velocity calculation model from an inverse time-based approach to a growth-based model where velocity increases with uptime. The new model is more intuitive (higher values = better performance) and adds configurable parameters for acceleration and maximum velocity caps.

  • Replaced inverse velocity calculation (1.0 / uptime) with a growth-based formula (BASE_VELOCITY + uptime * acceleration)
  • Added configurable acceleration factor and maximum velocity parameters with validation
  • Added comprehensive documentation explaining the velocity model, configuration, and usage examples

"""Calculate terminal velocity.

Uses a growth-based model where velocity increases with uptime.
Formula: velocity = BASE + (uptime * acceleration) * flow_multiplier

The formula in the comment is incorrect. According to the implementation on lines 72-76, the flow multiplier is applied to the entire velocity after acceleration, not just to (uptime * acceleration). The correct formula should be: velocity = (BASE + uptime * acceleration) * flow_multiplier (when in flow state).

Suggested change
Formula: velocity = BASE + (uptime * acceleration) * flow_multiplier
Formula: velocity = (BASE + uptime * acceleration) * flow_multiplier (when in flow state)

Fixed in commit 6a7955b. The formula documentation now correctly shows that the flow multiplier is applied to the entire velocity: velocity = (BASE + uptime * acceleration) * flow_multiplier (when in flow state)

syntax: Formula in docstring doesn't match implementation. Docstring says (uptime * acceleration) * flow_multiplier but code applies flow multiplier AFTER calculating base velocity, not during.

Suggested change
Formula: velocity = BASE + (uptime * acceleration) * flow_multiplier
Formula: velocity = (BASE + uptime * acceleration) * flow_multiplier (if in flow)

**syntax:** Formula in docstring doesn't match implementation. Docstring says `(uptime * acceleration) * flow_multiplier` but code applies flow multiplier AFTER calculating base velocity, not during.

```suggestion
        Formula: velocity = (BASE + uptime * acceleration) * flow_multiplier (if in flow)
How can I resolve this? If you propose a fix, please make it concise.
Applied the fix from the review comment. The formula documentation has been corrected to accurately reflect that the flow state multiplier is applied to the entire velocity calculation, not just the acceleration component. See commit 6a7955b.
