Open Research. Open Technology.
SymtraceLabs is an open research and technology initiative focused on understanding, building, and improving software systems through practical experimentation and open-source engineering.
We explore technical problems, build working systems, evaluate them through reproducible experiments, and publish useful implementations, research artifacts, and engineering knowledge openly.
Our work currently focuses on software engineering, program analysis, developer tooling, software evolution, and systems research, while leaving room for future research across emerging areas of technology.
We believe useful research should not end with an idea, and useful software should not end with a repository.
SymtraceLabs aims to connect research with working systems through a simple cycle:
Research
↓
Experiment
↓
Build
↓
Benchmark
↓
Reproduce
↓
Open
Our goal is to make technical work understandable, reproducible, and useful to the wider community.
Deterministic semantic analysis for software evolution.
Symtrace is our first open-source project. It explores how software changes can be understood beyond textual line differences.
Traditional version control systems primarily answer:
Which lines changed?
Symtrace explores a different question:
What actually changed in the program?
The project investigates deterministic semantic differencing using language-aware program representations, enabling software changes to be represented through meaningful structural operations rather than only textual edits.
- Semantic differencing
- Abstract Syntax Trees (ASTs)
- Program analysis
- Software evolution
- Repository analysis
- Cross-file analysis
- Developer tooling
- Software engineering research
Where possible, analysis and experiments should produce predictable and reproducible results.
We investigate technical problems and validate ideas through experimentation before treating them as solutions.
Methods, experiments, benchmarks, and implementation details should be documented so others can understand and reproduce the work.
We publish software, knowledge, and research artifacts openly whenever practical.
Ideas should meet real systems, real code, and real constraints.
Research should ultimately help people understand, build, maintain, or work with software more effectively.
The SymtraceLabs GitHub organization is the central home for our open-source work.
As the organization grows, this space will include repositories for:
- Research projects
- Developer tools
- Documentation
- Benchmarking
- Datasets
- Experimental systems
- Research artifacts
Explore our work:
SymtraceLabs is starting with a focused research project and will grow through actual research and engineering work.
- Develop the Symtrace semantic analysis engine
- Establish deterministic semantic operations
- Investigate software evolution analysis
- Improve repository-level analysis
- Develop reproducible benchmarks
- Expand cross-language support
- Develop benchmark datasets
- Publish research notes and technical reports
- Build reproducibility tooling
- Establish contributor infrastructure
- Develop additional open-source research projects
Build an open ecosystem where researchers and engineers can collaboratively investigate software systems, develop new tools, and share reproducible technical knowledge.
SymtraceLabs is intended to be built openly.
Contributions can take many forms:
- Code
- Research
- Experiments
- Benchmarking
- Documentation
- Dataset development
- Testing
- Technical discussions
- Ideas and feedback
Contribution guidelines will be published within individual repositories as each project matures.
We are interested not only in what can be built, but also in understanding:
- Why it works
- Where it fails
- How it performs
- Whether the results can be reproduced
- How others can build upon it
That is the foundation of SymtraceLabs.
