Summary

Adds a /run page for starting and aborting workloads from the browser, with one obvious indicator of what the device says the run is doing. The dashboard at / stays read-only and gains a plain link to /run, following the /setup precedent.

This is a UI change only. There is no API change and no change to workloads, run semantics, validation or conflict handling. It is independent of #8 and #9.

Run-state indicator

Every state except STARTING comes from GET /api/v1/status, polled every 2 s:

Shown Source
READY run_state: idle
STARTING… <workload> only while this page's POST /api/v1/runs is in flight
RUNNING — <workload> run_state: running
ABORTING — <workload> run_state: aborting
PASS / FAIL / ABORTED — <workload> run_state: complete plus result
STALE / DISCONNECTED no successful status poll for more than 5 s / 15 s, the dashboard's existing freshness rule
UNKNOWN — device reports … any other combination, shown verbatim
  • A 201 is not treated as RUNNING. The page records the accepted run_id, refreshes status at once, and says it is waiting until the device reports that run.
  • A result stays on screen for as long as the device keeps reporting it, until the next run starts. There is no display timer.
  • When contact is lost, the last report stays visible under "Device reports", labelled with its age, but the indicator changes to STALE and then DISCONNECTED.
  • After a reconnect, everything is rebuilt from /api/v1/status, so a page opened during a run shows that run.
  • The page also shows the workload, run ID, raw run_state/result, and previous_reboot_run_id when present.

Controls

  • Start is offered only for workloads the page knows how to build a request for:
    • BOOT, IDLE, WIFI_ASSOCIATED_IDLE, CPU_STRESS, FLASH_WRITE, NVS_WRITE, OTA_PARTITION_WRITE and CONTROLLED_REBOOT: duration only.
    • NET_TX, NET_RX and NET_BIDIRECTIONAL: duration plus traffic-peer host, port and rate in bit/s (0 = unthrottled).
  • Any other workload the device lists as available (for example FAN_PWM_HOLD from Add DragonBench fan-characterization experiment profile #8) is shown as "available; no controls on this page yet", with no button, so no malformed request can be sent. Unsupported workloads are listed as such.
  • Obvious input gaps (missing host, bad port, duration outside 0–3600 s) are caught before posting. The device remains the validator, and 400/409 error strings are shown verbatim.
  • Start buttons are disabled while starting, while the device reports running or aborting, and while it isn't answering. This is only UI hygiene; the device's own 409 is unchanged.
  • Abort appears only while the device reports a running run, and posts to /api/v1/runs/{id}/abort. ABORTING and ABORTED come from status, not from the click.
  • CONTROLLED_REBOOT carries a note that the device reboots when it passes. The page shows STALE/DISCONNECTED during the reboot, then READY with "rebooted by run …" from previous_reboot_run_id.

Tests

  • New tests/test_run_page_js.py: 17 tests that run the served page script in Node against a fake DOM, a controllable clock and a scripted device. They cover:
    • idle → STARTING (only while the POST is in flight) → RUNNING (only from status)
    • a POST acknowledgement with no device confirmation never becoming RUNNING
    • PASS persisting, FAIL, abort → ABORTING → ABORTED
    • 400 and 409 messages
    • input checks that never POST, and the exact NET_TX request body
    • loss of contact → STALE → DISCONNECTED with controls disabled, then reconnect into a still-active run
    • a page opened mid-run, and a device that is never reachable
    • duplicate clicks sending one request, and controls re-enabling only on fresh idle/complete state
    • unknown or unsupported workloads getting no Start control
    • the CONTROLLED_REBOOT disconnect and return
  • The tests were checked by breaking the page on purpose. Removing the in-flight guard, showing RUNNING from the POST acknowledgement, or ignoring staleness each makes them fail.
  • New contract tests: /run is registered and linked both ways; it has no external dependencies and no innerHTML; and its only writes are POST /api/v1/runs and …/abort.
  • Existing tests: test_landing_page_has_no_write_controls and the dashboard ↔ web/index.html sync test are unchanged and pass.

Local results:

  • 63 Python host tests, with Node and a C compiler required, none skipped.
  • Reset-tooling tests, the compile check, and the CLI invalid-input exit code.
  • Native test_db_run with -Werror, without sanitizers, since MinGW has no ASan; CI runs the sanitizer build.
  • ESP-IDF 5.3.5 builds for n8r8 and tinys3d with zero warnings and the expected config.

Not covered

  • Adds /run as a workload operator page. The / dashboard remains read-only and links to it.
  • The page polls GET /api/v1/status and displays device-reported run state. It shows STARTING only while its start request is in flight; a 201 response alone does not show RUNNING.
  • Start controls appear only for workloads with supported request shapes. The page validates inputs, then uses the existing run API to start or abort workloads. It shows Abort only when the device reports a running run and the connection is live.
  • The page reports STALE after 5 seconds and DISCONNECTED after 15 seconds without a successful status poll. It retains device-reported results and reports controlled reboots, including previous_reboot_run_id when available.
  • Start and abort requests time out after 4 seconds. If response headers arrive but reading the body fails or times out, the page retains the HTTP status and reports the acknowledgement or refusal without inventing a run ID. Run state still comes from status polling. If headers do not arrive, the page reports no response.
  • The change adds no API, workload, run-semantics, hardware-output, or persistence changes. It does not change boot, reset, GPIO, watchdog, fault-handling, or OTA behavior.

Validation / Remaining gaps

  • The author reports Node-backed page behavior tests for validation, refusals, conflicts, status transitions, timeouts, stalled or dropped response bodies, and controlled reboot. Contract tests cover route registration, links, external dependencies, and write scope. Existing checks for the read-only dashboard and page synchronization are reported unchanged and passing.
  • The author reports 63 Python host tests with Node.js and a C compiler, with none skipped, plus reset-tooling, compile, CLI invalid-input, native test_db_run, and ESP-IDF 5.3.5 build checks. These results were not independently run here.
  • The page has not been tested on hardware. Elapsed run time is unavailable because the status API does not provide a start time. FAN_PWM_HOLD controls remain deferred pending inputs from #8.
  • Review finding counts are unavailable; no findings were supplied.

The dashboard at / stays read-only (its no-write-controls contract test is
unchanged) and gains a plain link to /run, following the /setup precedent.

/run shows one run-state indicator taken from /api/v1/status: READY,
RUNNING, ABORTING, PASS, FAIL or ABORTED with the workload and run ID.
The only browser-side state is STARTING, shown while the page's own POST
is in flight. A 201 is not treated as RUNNING; the page refreshes status
and waits for the device to report the run. Staleness uses the existing
5 s / 15 s freshness rule, so a lost connection shows STALE and then
DISCONNECTED instead of a stale RUNNING.

Start buttons exist only for workloads whose request the page knows how
to build (the eight duration-only workloads, and NET_* with host, port
and rate). Any other available workload is listed without a control.
Buttons are disabled while starting, while the device reports a run
active, and while the device is not answering; the device still rejects
conflicting requests itself. Abort appears only for a running run and
posts to /api/v1/runs/{id}/abort.

No API, workload, or run-state change.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 8f99a

This adds a browser page for starting and watching runs, and it does not change the device API. No actionable merge-blocking risk was identified. The page has not been exercised on hardware, which is normal validation uncertainty.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8f99a

The page uses existing device APIs and preserves device-side validation, conflict handling, and run-ID checks. No new execution privilege or confirmed security regression was established. The access policy governing who can reach and operate the device remains unclear.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller able to operate the existing workload API can affect the reached device through supported CPU, storage, and reboot workloads, and initiate network workloads toward supplied peers. The page exposes these existing capabilities without adding a cross-device coordinator or new execution privilege. Wider network and environment exposure remains deployment-dependent.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The device remains the enforcement point: it validates supported workloads and parameters, rejects running or aborting conflicts under a lock, and requires an exact current-run identity for abort. A stale browser abort cannot terminate a replacement run. These controls constrain execution and ownership but do not authenticate callers.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The existing controlled-reboot lifecycle publishes complete before restarting, leaving a window in which another run can be accepted and then interrupted by the earlier reboot. The browser permits starts on complete, mirroring the existing API precondition. Base comparison confirms this failure-containment limitation predates the PR; it is not retained as an introduced architecture concern.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define and document the intended operator-access boundary for both access-point and station-network use. If reachable networks include untrusted clients, enforce workload authorization at the device rather than relying on browser controls or page discoverability.

✅ Action performed

Full review finished.

The start and abort POSTs had no timeout. A request that stalled kept
STARTING on screen with every Start button disabled, or kept Abort
disabled, until the page was reloaded, even after polling had marked the
device STALE or DISCONNECTED.

Both requests now use the same AbortController pattern and 4 s limit as
the status poll. When the limit is reached the request is aborted, the
page reports that no response arrived, clears STARTING or the pending
abort, and polls at once. A timeout is not a FAIL or an ABORTED: what
the device reports next decides what is shown.

The test harness now has timers that fire and an AbortController that
rejects a held request. New tests cover a start and an abort that never
answer, including an abort that reached the device, and check that
answered requests clear their timer without aborting. The contract test
no longer depends on the abort request's options ending after method.

When a start or abort reply's headers arrived but its body stalled, the
4 s timeout aborted the body read and the JSON fallback turned that into
an empty payload. A start then read "Refused by the device (HTTP 201)"
although the device had accepted it, and an abort read "Abort requested"
instead of reporting no response.

Both body-read fallbacks now rethrow when their request's own signal was
aborted, so a timeout takes the existing no-response path. A complete
reply whose body is not JSON still falls back to an empty payload and is
reported with its HTTP status. Device-reported state still decides the
indicator.

New tests stall the body after the headers for a start and an abort, and
check that a non-JSON reply is still reported with its status.

A start or abort whose headers arrived but whose body did not (the 4 s
timeout aborted it, or the connection dropped) was reported as "No
response". The device had answered: a 201 means it accepted the start,
and a 200 or 409 on abort is a real outcome.

The body-read fallback now keeps the status and marks the body as lost
for any failure other than a SyntaxError. A body that arrived but is not
JSON keeps the empty-payload fallback as before. The page then says:

- start 201: acknowledged, the run ID is unknown
- start refusal: refused with the status, reason unavailable
- abort 2xx: acknowledged for the run
- abort refusal: refused with the status, reason unavailable

"No response" is kept for failures before any headers arrive. No run ID
is invented, and RUNNING, ABORTING and ABORTED still come only from
/api/v1/status, which is polled straight after.

Tests cover a stalled body after 201, 200 and 409 replies, and a
connection drop during a 201 body.
