feat: session layer and working et client - #5
Conversation
Enter ~ . detaches, ~~ sends a tilde; state carries across reads. Verified with go test -race.
Start sends INITIAL_PAYLOAD with supports_exit_status and waits up to 5 s for INITIAL_RESPONSE. Transport.ReadPacket reports the end of a session as io.EOF so session does not depend on etcp. Verified with go test -race under synctest.
Session-level packets stay in the router; other headers go to the registered service. A normal end drains every queue first so trailing output is not lost. Also drops the task-2 nolint marker on errEnded now that the router uses it. Verified with go test -race under synctest.
The reader never waits on the network so ~. works during an outage; the sender chunks input to 64 KiB and sends only the latest window size. Run closes the terminal and joins every goroutine. The terminal reader is tracked in its own WaitGroup so that, when Close fails on Windows and may leave it blocked in ReadConsoleW, Run logs the error at Warn and stops waiting for it; a window size with zero rows or columns is sent as 80x24. Verified with go test -race -count=10 and golangci-lint on linux and windows.
The ExitError doc and the Start comment stated server behavior without a source. They now cite upstream master's TerminalServer.cpp, which forwards TERMINAL_EXIT_STATUS only when the client set supports_exit_status, and et-v7.0.0's ETerminal.proto, which has neither the field nor the header. Verified with git grep and git show in the upstream checkout; go vet and golangci-lint clean.
Short and long flag names share one variable. Destination forms include bracketed IPv6 with zones; conflicting -p or -u is an error. ssh -G resolves ssh_config aliases for the TCP dial. Verified with go test -race. resolveHost and resolveTimeout carry a nolint:unused marker: Task 6 wires them into run().
A user or host beginning with "-" reached ssh -G in resolveHost as an option (et -- -evil), even though internal/bootstrap already rejected it; parseDestination now rejects it itself so the caller gets a usage error (exit 2) before resolveHost ever sees it. A trailing colon with no port text (box: or [::1]:) was silently accepted as no port; it is now an error. Verified with go test -race; each new case's check was removed and observed failing, then restored.
Start runs with the console cooked; raw mode is restored before any message and on a main-goroutine panic. Exit status is the remote code, 0 on a normal end or detach, 2 for usage errors, 255 otherwise. *etcp.Conn is passed directly as the session.Transport; a test pins that etcp.ErrSessionEnded wraps io.EOF. Verified with go test -race, golangci-lint on linux and windows, and a manual session against the local etserver.
Covers interactive echo, byte-exact seq 1 200000, three connection cuts during paced output with exact replay (the test fails if a cut lands after the output or et never reconnects), input after reconnect, and exit status 0 after exit. Waits for shell readiness with a re-sent probe instead of prompt matching, and strips OSC title sequences before matching markers. Runs only with -tags e2e. Verified against etserver 7.0.0 on this host.
startET's pty-reader and cmd.Wait goroutines used bare go and were never joined, violating the every-goroutine-started-with-WaitGroup.Go-and-joined rule. Give term a sync.WaitGroup, start both with wg.Go, and wait for it in t.Cleanup after killing the process and closing the pty (same pattern as proxy in this file). Also documents the creack/pty go.mod entry as test-only.
README Usage covers flags, detach, exit status and logs. AGENTS.md lists every package, including internal/session and test/e2e. CI runs go fix -diff after the ruleguard build. Verified with the full phase gate, all six cross-compile targets, the e2e suite and go mod tidy.
The Ctrl+Break handler was registered before the console opened, so a Ctrl+Break during the ssh bootstrap, the dial or the start handshake cancelled with ErrDetached: et printed the detach message and exited 0 although no session existed. The handler is now registered right after session.Start succeeds and unregistered before connect returns; before that, Ctrl+Break reaches the Go runtime handler, which delivers os.Interrupt to the signal context, so the connect aborts with status 255. The handler is injected through env so tests pin the ordering and call it mid-session. Verified with go test -race, golangci-lint on linux and windows, and four mutation checks.
resolveHost asked ssh -G for the etserver address without the -o options the bootstrap ssh gets, so an option such as HostName, or one that changes a Match block, could send the TCP dial to a different host than the one etterminal was started on. Each option is now passed as its own -o<opt> word, the same form bootstrap uses. The lookup also sets WaitDelay so a descendant holding ssh's stdout cannot stretch it past the timeout, and accepts exec.ErrWaitDelay as a finished run, as bootstrap.Run does. Verified with go test -race (a fake ssh pins the exact argv, the fallback and the WaitDelay bound), golangci-lint on linux and windows, and six mutation checks.
…nces The detach message and README said a detached session stays on the server until it times out, but etserver 7.0.0 has no disconnect timeout and upstream master's disconnect_timeout is off by default; they now say the remote shell keeps running and et cannot reattach. The README states that --ssh-option applies to the bootstrap ssh, that the etserver TCP connection is dialed directly (no ProxyJump) on port 2022 by default, and how the exit status differs from upstream et. Comments no longer cite local design documents that are never published, and several comments that described a mechanism the code does not have (a stalled Write making Close fail, the reader never waiting, a test's dial failing on the network) are corrected. The TERMINAL_CLOSE case is marked defensive with the upstream lines that show only clients send it. Verified with go vet, go test -race, golangci-lint on linux and windows, prettier, and a repo-wide sweep for private pointers.
…atus When the local terminal's size could not be read, no TERMINAL_INFO was sent until the first resize; the error branch now sends the default 80x24 the zero-size fallback already uses. A remote exit status outside 0-255 was passed to os.Exit, where Unix keeps only the low 8 bits, so a reported 256 exited 0; exitCode now maps it to 255, and the README says so. Also drops an uncited claim from a size test comment. Verified with go test -race, golangci-lint on linux and windows, and mutation checks (one equivalent mutant, >=255, survives by construction).
The go fix -diff step saw only linux files with default tags, and nothing in CI compiled the e2e package, so a compile break there went unnoticed until someone ran it by hand. The lint job now also runs go fix -diff with GOOS=windows and with -tags e2e, and vets the e2e package without running it. AGENTS.md lists both commands. Verified by running each command locally (exit 0) and with actionlint.
The README said upstream et exits 0 for interactive sessions without saying how that is known; it now points at the upstream client source. Verified against the upstream checkout and with prettier.

Fixed in 08ebf96. The server's error text is now quoted with %q, so control characters are escaped, and bounded to 256 bytes (trimmed to valid UTF-8). I kept the text rather than a fixed message because it is the only diagnostic when etterminal rejects the session. TestStartRejectedTextIsQuotedAndBounded pins both.

Fixed in 08ebf96. The test now waits for a new connection after each of the three cuts and requires at least four connections, so every recovery cycle is exercised.
session.Start quoted the server's INITIAL_RESPONSE error text verbatim into its error, which et prints to the terminal, so control sequences from the peer reached the user's terminal; the text is now quoted with %q and bounded to 256 bytes. A -u value beginning with '-' is now a usage error, the same rule a destination user already had. The e2e reconnect test now waits for a new connection after each of its three cuts and requires at least four, and a waitFor timeout prints the end of the output, since the transcript file is deleted unless go test runs with -artifacts. Verified with go test -race, golangci-lint on linux and windows, wasm vet, mutation checks, and e2e runs against etserver 7.0.0 (one with reconnects delayed past the new bound, which fails as intended).

Summary
This makes
eta working client. It addsinternal/sessionand wires every package intocmd/et, soet [user@]host[:port]starts etterminal over ssh, connects to etserver, runs an interactive shell and reconnects transparently when the network drops.internal/sessionruns the start handshake (INITIAL_PAYLOAD with supports_exit_status, 5 s wait for INITIAL_RESPONSE), a header router with per-service queues, and the terminal service. The terminal service has four goroutines (output, keyboard reader, sender, resize), all joined beforeRunreturns. The reader never blocks on the network, so the ssh-styleEnter ~ .escape works during an outage; pending input is capped at 1 MiB, sent in 64 KiB packets, and only the latest window size is sent after an outage. A normal end drains queued output before returning. The package does not import etcp: the end of a session arrives as a ReadPacket error wrapping io.EOF, whichetcp.ErrSessionEndeddoes.cmd/etparses flags with the standard library (bracketed IPv6 with zones, conflicting-p/:portand-u/user@rejected, option-like destinations rejected), resolves ssh_config aliases for the TCP dial withssh -G(passing--ssh-optionvalues), keeps logging off by default, and restores the console before printing anything. On Windows, Ctrl+Break detaches once the session is running. Exit status is the remote status when the server reports one (clamped to 0-255), 0 on a normal end or detach, 2 for usage errors and 255 otherwise. It also adds an e2e suite (
