Owner

The bounded causal LM previously fit inside the controller. This adds compose-lm so recursive generations fit in external Compose containers, while collection, held-out evaluation and promotion retain the existing controller and gate.

The adapter reuses durable job identity, owner fencing, atomic resource reservations, NDJSON, staged completion validation, cancellation, recovery and settlement. The LM validator binds canonical tensors, source/collection identity, fit evidence, peak memory and target-token use. Image, memory, CPU and fit allowances are declared before launch and bound into programme/job identity. Containers use a digest-pinned Node base, a non-root user, a read-only root, dropped capabilities, no network or ports, a PID limit, and kernel memory/swap and CPU ceilings. Only job staging is mounted; request/config mounts are read-only. Held-out examples and tracker access stay outside the trainer.

The real-container suite covers two promoted generations and successor collection, SIGKILL after staged completion without retraining or double charge, cancellation, corrupt checkpoints, real memory/time refusals, and two-controller single-launch accounting. The LM adapter contract contains the synthetic model/data declarations and measured lineage. Storage remains watchdog-based rather than a hard disk quota.

Review round 1 tightens the bandit contention test's synchronization. The original fixture paused after collection, before a process reservation existed. It now pauses after the durable running reservation write. The test observes exactly one unsettled one-step reservation before permitting trainer startup, then verifies the same settled job, one history creation, one launch and idempotent resume. Expected controller refusals include their diagnostic message, and test cleanup targets the exact owned job even on assertion failure. No production lease, reservation, launch accounting, allowance or timeout was changed.

The original Node 26 CI job used 26.12.0 and failed on the winner's exit code after about 31 seconds; its refusal reason was not retained in the old assertion. Shared contention/accounting code is unchanged by this feature. Twenty diagnostic original-test runs on Node 26.7.0 and three original-source probes on exact CI 26.12.0 passed. The historical exit's precise cause therefore remains unconfirmed; the new reservation barrier has a deterministic proof, without claiming a demonstrated production contention repair.

The packed CLI fixture now passes an explicit temporary pmRoot to SDK initialization. The normal PM-linked command previously followed injected PM_PATH into pre-seeded settings and refused before training. Its link was replaced using pinned pm test remove/add, with existing history preserved. pm test pm-rl-7c7m --run --progress now passes in default schema/source context on Node 26.12.0: measured CLI 14,597.809 ms; total command time 28,377 ms including setup.

Behavioural revert proofs are recorded in PM comments:

  • Restoring only the original controller fixture with the new test retained fails at the reservation barrier: zero jobs observed, one required. Restoring the new fixture passes.
  • The original CLI fixture fails in the linked command with init_existing_settings_requires_force; explicit fixture pmRoot reaches and passes the unchanged timing assertion.

Final contention repetitions use real Compose controllers and ordinary temporary trackers:

Runtime Passed Failed / skipped
Node 22.23.1 20 / 20 0 / 0
Node 26.7.0 20 / 20 0 / 0
Node 26.12.0 (exact failed-CI runtime) 20 / 20 0 / 0

Completed literal release gates against source/test commit 91d40fc use isolated HOME/Git configuration and executable RAM temporary trackers. Subsequent tracker receipts leave source/tests unchanged.

Gate Runtime Passed Failed / skipped Statements / lines / branches / functions
npm run release:check Node 26.12.0 590 / 590 0 / 0 100 / 100 / 100 / 100
bun run release:check Node 26.7.0, Bun 1.3.5 590 / 590 0 / 0 100 / 100 / 100 / 100

Both exit 0 with all 30 authored sources reported, 272 documented declarations, zero duplicate clones and production vulnerabilities, approved identities, publish attestation, package validation and the current changelog. Packed CLI measured 10,996.891 ms in the serial npm retry and 11,086.851 ms in Bun against the unchanged 20,000 ms assertion. An earlier npm attempt had 589/590 passing with the sole packed CLI child reaching its unchanged 25,000 ms timeout; concurrent diagnostic probes added load. That failure and separate linked timing failures remain recorded as variability evidence, not included in the passing gate counts. No sampling optimization or threshold change was made.

Owned-resource cleanup verifies zero repository Compose containers and removes only the three images carrying this validation run's exact owner label. Both original PM history byte prefixes remain unchanged. Items remain open for orchestrator verification; claims are released.

PM: pm-rl-whrd, pm-rl-7c7m.

Reviewer's Guide

This PR adds a production compose-lm adapter that trains bounded language-model updates in isolated, digest-pinned Docker Compose containers across two recursive generations, while preserving controller-side collection, evaluation, promotion, durable recovery, accounting, and comprehensive release/drill evidence.
