Process and storage primitives scripts/crash-process.mts, scripts/crash-storage.mts, scripts/crash-clock.mts, scripts/crash-harness.test.mts |
Adds traced process execution and kill-boundary checks, tracker snapshots and byte comparisons, history-prefix validation, and recovery-state classification. Tests cover these helpers. |
Corpus execution and replay scripts/crash-harness.mts, scripts/crash-harness.test.mts |
Adds update and comment scenarios for native and published implementations. The harness measures syscall boundaries, injects kills, restarts operations, checks state and receipts, compares baseline results, and retains synthetic failure evidence for replay. |
CLI and release-check integration scripts/crash-cli.mts, justfile, .github/workflows/ci.yml, .gitignore, tests/harness/*, scripts/crash-harness.test.mts |
Adds CLI run and replay modes, harness check targets, TypeScript and ESLint settings, and Linux installation of strace for release checks. |
Documentation and recorded results README.md, docs/CRASH_HARNESS.md, docs/CRASH_PUBLIC_COPY_2026_10_22.json, docs/CRASH_REVERT_PROOF_2026_10_22.json, .agents/pm/features/*, .agents/pm/tasks/*, .agents/pm/history/* |
Documents harness usage, constraints, and coverage. The recorded public-copy run reports two native first-fsync restart refusals and matching parity comparisons; the records state that full runtime crash conformance remains unproven. |

Full details: Title check
-
Explanation
The title "Detect crash recovery divergence with replayable native and published checks" matches the main change: a typed TypeScript crash harness and
just crashCLI that kill and restart native and published pm-cli processes, compare recovered state, and retain replayable synthetic failures. The title is specific and does not describe unrelated work. It omits the Linux/strace requirement and the SDK/CLI surface, which is acceptable for a short title.

Orchestrator review (built-in Claude review agent; blocking finding queued to the feature agent after its #102 fixes):
VERDICT: BLOCK
FINDINGS:
- [blocking] scripts/crash-harness.mts:226 with scripts/crash-storage.mts:13 — the restart command always repeats the interrupted operation and
snapshot()omitsruntime/, where native keeps its journals (runtime/transactions/{operation}-{id}.json), so a leftover native journal never shows in any comparison. Repro: kill nativeupdateat rename #1; theupdate-<id>.jsonjournal stays; a latercommentsucceeds on the old item bytes (recover_and_locatechecks only the comment journal, src/mutation.rs:1985); every laterupdatethen hitsRecoveryConflictbecause the item matches neither hash. Published has no journal and keeps working; the harness reports ok andoriginalsUnchanged(line 116) ignores any non-.toon/.jsonlfile. Includeruntime/in snapshots, restart with a DIFFERENT operation at least once per scenario, and fix the native recovery (or file it as a blocking pm-rust defect with the harness proving it). - [non-blocking] docs/CRASH_HARNESS.md:56 / scripts/crash-process.mts:6 — published gets one injection point per scenario (before the item rename), so its riskiest window (item replaced, history append and lock release pending) is never injected;
strace -P <history>.jsonl -e inject=openat:signal=SIGKILL:when=1reproduces a diverged item with no history entry and an exit-0 restart. stracewhen=counts per thread and published's renames run on libuv worker threads. - [non-blocking] scripts/crash-harness.mts:274/317 — recovery states are never compared between runtimes;
paritycovers only uninterrupted baselines (native rename #1 endscommitted, published endsbefore, both ok). - [non-blocking] scripts/crash-clock.mts:6 — pinning
Date.now()freezes every elapsed-time path in published locking (TTL age 0, wait budget never expires, negative stale-gate age), undisclosed. - [non-blocking] scripts/crash-harness.test.mts:268-273 — the end-to-end replay runs only inside
if (failed.length > 0)with the native fsync#1 failures allowlisted, so once that item is fixed the replay coverage vanishes silently; published 2026.10.22 recovers an empty lock file with exit 0, a parity gap the follow-up item omits. - [non-blocking] scripts/crash-harness.mts:339 — the nested synthetic reduction runs inside the outer try, so a
CrashRefusalfrom it discards the measured public-copy failure and the CLI exits 2 instead of 1. - [non-blocking] docs/CRASH_REVERT_PROOF_2026_10_22.json:28, CRASH_PUBLIC_COPY_2026_10_22.json — controls record only a test pattern and exit code and the receipt only a binary sha256, so neither is reproducible from the repo.
SUMMARY: Adds a TypeScript SDK andjust crashCLI that strace-SIGKILL the native binary and published pm-cli at rename/fsync syscalls, then check item/history bytes, history prefixes and restart receipts; no Rust changes, tracker items committed, no private data. Unit and refusal tests are solid, but the restart design and the excludedruntime/directory hide a native-only journal recovery problem, and published gets one trivially safe kill point per scenario.

Orchestrator: marking ready. The append-only blocker is fixed: all 86 history streams are exact prefix extensions of main, and a new prefix gate fails when its comparison is reverted. CI passes 10/10 on the exact head. The remaining full-health chain mismatches ( |

Orchestrator review (built-in Claude review agent, verified by the orchestrator; bots are not waited for since 2026-10-22):
Pre-merge review (codex gpt-6.1-sol read-only review agent; merged by the orchestrator's pipeline after a MERGE verdict and a private-data scan of the added lines).
VERDICT: MERGE
FINDINGS:
- [non-blocking] scripts/crash-oracle-proof.mts:64 — The recorder reports all eight live mutation checks as successful although its test filters execute only two live return cases — rerunning it certifies six mutation checks it never executes.
SUMMARY: The PR adds phase-aware exact-state recovery checks, cross-operation replay, and a history-prefix gate. The reviewed tests cover real crashes and data-loss mutations, but I did not rerun them.
Closed with the merge evidence and the strict resolution/expected/actual fields; completed_at is the merge time. The published-oracle divergences stay open in pm-rust-published-history-open. Co-authored-by: SteveBot <1153461+unbraind@users.noreply.github.com>
The crash harness previously accepted an exit-zero final return after item deletion or loss of the acknowledged restart event. It also paired equal syscall ordinals even when the two implementations had reached different transaction phases.
The harness now uses one exact canonical-state oracle after restart and return. Clean PRE/POST references include all item bytes, complete history streams, configuration, unknown runtime files and pending journals. The observed commit phase selects one reference; a state cannot pass by matching either alternative opportunistically. Restart and return are compared with the same clean operation sequence, and the final update changes priority to produce a real event. The known derived access log, metadata delta cache, root caches and private atomic staging names are outside the canonical-state contract; process crashes do not certify power-loss durability.
The history write-open boundary independently follows publication; a read open is not commit evidence. Successful and resumed trace calls are handled. Parity compares every pair within a phase and records both syscall/ordinal coordinates. Unequal counts are allowed, and unpaired phases are explicit. Native rename-1 commits while published rename-1 rolls back: both pass locally and are no longer paired.
The new oracle receipt records fresh public-copy measurements, both tables and exact independently applicable control patches. Historical receipts remain unchanged and certify their recorded code versions.
The six real states per mutation are POST/restarted/returned states for both update and comment, produced in plain-directory trackers by the published process. Linux live mutations alter real native process output while retaining exit zero. Total: 32 killed, zero survived. The phase-equivalence table accepts four synthetic pairs with differing ordinals, including before-commit fsync-1/rename-1 and cleanup fsync-6/rename-12; it rejects equal-ordinal phase aliases. The full live corpus independently covers differing syscall and ordinal pairs.
Behavioral revert proof 1 restores seed-prefix-only acceptance: the selected real-state and live return deletion/truncation regressions fail, exit 1; restoring exact equality passes, exit 0. Proof 2 restores same-syscall/same-ordinal pairing: phase parity fails, exit 1; restoring phase pairing passes, exit 0. Both are recorded as PM comments and patches under
docs/controls/crash-oracle/. Reproduce withnode scripts/crash-oracle-proof.mtsafter installing the pinned oracle/tools and building the native executable.Fresh public main-copy result: 85 items, 176 files, 26 kills; 24 exact restart/return successes, two published 2026.10.21 history-open divergences, two minimized synthetic fixtures; source unchanged. All 26 seed acknowledgements/history prefixes remain intact. Baseline bytes and shared acknowledgement projections agree for both scenarios. Phase parity has 20 comparisons: 10 pass and 10 differences, all involving those two independently failing published cases. No difference comes solely from unequal ordinals.
Append-only history remains enforced in the release gate: all 86 main history streams remain byte-identical prefixes; the changed-history gate checks one changed existing stream and one branch-only stream. No main records or hash anchors were repaired.
Local validation:
pm test pm-rust-crash-harness --run --match test-concurrency=1 --progress --jsonrunsnode --test --test-concurrency=1 scripts/crash-*.test.mts: 50/50, zero failures/skips/cancellations, 171 seconds. After deleting the unused legacy oracle helper, the replacement complete-history regression also passes. Strict TypeScript, ESLint, changelog generation/check, and the main-prefix gate pass. Default isolated pinned strict health passes; optional full history health still reports unchanged main itemspm-rust-bj7aandpm-rust-unih, left untouched.Fresh exact-head full CI run 40172801056 passes 10/10 jobs on
c7f2f7533b771ee7f362b2d20170417620146466. CodeQL also passes on this head. All ordinary and instrumented Rust suites have zero failed/ignored tests; all Node suites have zero failures/cancellations. CI standard strict health and the main-history prefix gate pass on all four aggregates. The existing npm/Bun native
just release-checkmatrix supplies the full gate on this CPU-saturated host. Rust source, four coverage thresholds, platform skips and tool pins are unchanged. No TypeScript coverage percentage is claimed.Tracking: pm-rust-crash-harness, published oracle follow-up, existing history investigation. SDK/CLI and replay guide.
Draft retained with zero promotions: the oracle blockers are fixed and full CI is green, but the pinned full history-health audit still fails on the two unchanged main items named above. Standard health passes; full history health remains unmet. The harness item is open and unclaimed. No PR merge or software release.
