Reviewer's GuideThis PR connects ordinary large-file staging to bounded CDC manifests, preserves attribution and typed-file compatibility across edits and copies, adds manifest-aware status and physical-byte GC receipts, and validates the workflow with focused regressions, a reproducible scale benchmark, and an isolated packed CLI scenario. Hosted CI follow-through for immutable head 2326bf3, checked 2026-10-21 15:42 UTC. This is hosted evidence, not an independent full release certification. The completed Node 22 test job has 1773 passing / 2 failing tests: https://github.com/unbraind/pm-vcs/actions/runs/39624821226/job/119307259529
The existing canonical implementation item is still in progress: https://github.com/unbraind/pm-vcs/blob/2326bf3a107de8e2babedf31c8922d72703e5af0/.agents/pm/features/pm-vcs-phase6stage.toon . Adding here rather than opening duplicate tracking. Acceptance: retain the bounded discovery/physical-hash semantic assertion, explicitly account for the new production file, and rerun full required Node/Bun gates on the final PR head. The PR correctly labels the full gates pending; these results do not invalidate its separately reported focused tests or establish a deployed regression. |
|
Follow-through on my earlier CI evidence, checked 2026-10-21 16:24 UTC: the two failures reported at 2326bf3 are resolved on current immutable head b8c0597. Static diff confirms the legacy-export fixture now explicitly constructs a legacy large blob instead of unintentionally invoking new CDC staging; the exact bounded-discovery/hash assertion is retained. Production inventory explicitly changes 74 to 75 without adding coverage ignores. The completed Node 22 hosted job reports 1775 tests, 1775 pass, 0 fail, including both named regressions: https://github.com/unbraind/pm-vcs/actions/runs/39629596825/job/119323912709 . Node 26 and Windows 22/26 checks on this same head also report success. This supersedes the earlier failed-head evidence, not the independently scoped limitations of the broader feature. It is hosted CI plus static reconciliation, not an independent whole-release or deployment certification; no merge or npm publication is implied. |

scan()for manifest-backed entries.

Orchestrator review (built-in Claude review agent; blocking finding handed to the feature agent):
VERDICT: BLOCK
FINDINGS:
- [blocking] engine/repo.ts:710 —
vcs addnow stores every non-record file of 1 MiB or more as a CDC manifest (defaultrecordPathsis[]), including.agents/pm/history/*.jsonl, butmergePath(engine/rewrite.ts:188) returns a keep-ourscontentconflict whenever either side or the base is a manifest and the PM-history union merge (rewrite.ts:215) runs only on blobs. Repro: a history JSONL reaches 1,048,576 bytes, agents A and B each append one event and commit; before this PR the merge unioned both, now it is a hard conflict with no markers and B's event is dropped. Same for diff3 on any large text file (lockfiles). ARCHITECTURE.md:773 claims blob and manifest storage share the text/PM-history interpretation. Apply the union and diff3 merges to manifest-backed text files (materialise, merge, re-store) or keep history and text files as blobs, and add a merge test over the threshold. - [non-blocking] engine/repo.ts:723 — the staged id depends on file size, not on what is already recorded, so re-adding an unchanged ≥1 MiB file committed as a blob turns its id into a manifest id: spurious "modified" with an empty diff, a new tree entry for the same content, and spurious conflicts with concurrent edits. Keep the existing entry's id when the bytes still match.
- [non-blocking] engine/refs.ts:292 / engine/gc.ts:52 — leftover
<ref>.<pid>.tmpfiles from crashes under the oldwriteAtomicare now real refs with no migration: a complete one is a phantom branch, a truncated one makes everygcthrowunsafe_gc_rootsuntil deleted by hand. - [non-blocking] engine/gc.ts:43,50,52 — the new GC refusal messages include absolute filesystem paths, which agents paste into committed pm comments; use repo-relative paths.
SUMMARY: Streams files of 1 MiB or more into CDC manifests in bounded memory under the store write lock with a two-pass identity check, stops GC from skipping legal.tmprefs and moves ref temp files into the reserved.locknamespace. GC reachability through tmp refs, streamed-versus-buffered hashing and publication cleanup under injected faults are well tested, but no test merges a manifest-backed file, so the history-merge regression is uncaught.

Orchestrator review (built-in Claude review agent, verified by the orchestrator; bots are not waited for since 2026-10-22):
VERDICT: MERGE
FINDINGS:
- none
SUMMARY: Follow-up at 72f2216 addresses the blocking finding (manifest-backed PM histories union both appended events and large text files diff3-merge; binary conflicts keep bounded validation) plus the staged-id preservation with cold-cache and symlink regressions and repository-relative GC paths; legacy crash temporaries are tracked in a separate pm item for explicit migration. Four release gates 1822/1822 at 100% coverage across 76 sources; mergeable_state clean.
Ordinary add streams regular non-record files of at least 1 MiB into native CDC manifests under the store write lock. Chunk addresses hash uncompressed framed bytes; status streams historical fragment boundaries and range reads visit overlapping subtrees. GC retains legal
.tmprefs, reports physical candidate/reclaimed bytes, and ref publication uses exclusive randomized temporaries in the reserved.locknamespace.This follow-up fixes a merge regression introduced by manifest staging. Large PM histories previously hit a keep-ours content conflict instead of unioning appended events; large ordinary text also bypassed diff3. Merge first verifies every fragment and classifies UTF8 with bounded reads, then materializes textual payloads and uses the existing blob history/text paths, including blob/manifest transitions. Invalid/truncated UTF8 or NUL data retains a byte-preserving binary conflict without whole-manifest concatenation. Append-only histories retain both branches' events and their agreed prefix. Text conflicts retain real markers and alternatives; record/link incompatibilities keep their explicit conflict behavior. Merged text is stored as a blob, and unchanged regular-file re-add preserves that address.
.pmvcs/refs, including invalid addresses, file/directory links and the ref-root link.<ref>.<pid>.tmpcrash leftoversThe previous self-review claim that manifest merge already had equivalent text/history semantics was incorrect; it checked integrity and whole-side preservation but missed this interpretation regression. Whole-diff review corrected the existing manifest-conflict tests to require actual diff3 markers and both alternatives. Incompatible record kinds, links, terminal erasure, missing/corrupt fragments, and publication locking retain their existing tests and contracts. The current GitHub review snapshot has zero unresolved threads and no new outside-diff findings. No thread has been replied to or resolved by this work.

The final combined text/classification/binary-guard selection passes 8/8 with zero failures/skips/cancellations/TODOs. Pinned PM links pass the portable text/classification cases 7/7, the unchanged binary verification/damage cases 6/6, and the cold-cache staging/symlink selection 6/6. Native Bun passes the combined storage/symlink/merge/classification selection 13/13 (10 unrelated cases filtered). New cases cover multibyte code points split across real fragments, incomplete UTF8, NUL data and mixed binary blobs/text manifests. The original binary validation file remains byte-for-byte unchanged. Tests import source directly and use real plain-directory SDK trackers without Git or SDK mocks. Earlier staging/GC/conflict regressions remain in the complete suite.
Local validation passes: npm ci (zero vulnerabilities), build:test, typecheck, lint, docstrings, 0% duplication across all 76 production sources, changelog generation/check and strict health (8/8 checks, two existing advisory warnings, no pending merge receipts). The committed archive independently matches committed source after regeneration from explicitly staged changes. dist is ignored and was rebuilt by archive acceptance.
The first Node 22 full CI run on superseded 99f2730 passed 1814/1815 tests at 100% per-file coverage but exposed the bounded binary-contract failure. The original guard was retained and the classifier corrected it. That failed CI and the stopped superseded local run are not counted as passing release gates.
Main integration: merged current main 6ca9427 after PR 139 landed, preserving tracker reconciliation. The archive was the only conflict and was regenerated. Commits: 495f07f (main integration), 99f2730 (merge/staging/GC fixes), 56be330 (bounded binary protection and text classification), 72f2216 (regular-file retention boundary and cold-cache/symlink regressions); PM evidence and the regenerated archive accompany the changes.

All 76 production sources pass all four per-file coverage thresholds in each run; thresholds and scope are unchanged. The explicit native Bun lens suite passes 8/8 on each matrix leg. Both Windows launcher jobs, Bun package-graph installation checks and CodeQL pass at this head. Committed archive acceptance, changelog validation and strict tracker health also pass locally.
Work and revert proofs: pm-vcs-phase6stage, in progress with its claim released. Follow-up: pm-vcs-legacyreftmp, open. No item was closed.
The prior 200 MB scale receipt is retained without rerunning the completed measurement. Annotation and merge materialize selected logical payloads in memory; bounded staging/status/range behavior remains a separate contract. Streaming checkout/merge, pack storage and ambiguous edited moves remain existing follow-ups. No PR merge or release is performed.
