Summary

With `moduleCache: false` (and `fsCache: false`), TypeScript configs reload after a file change because they are transpiled and evaluated. Plain CJS `.js` files skip transpile and go through `nativeRequire`, so Node's `require.cache` still returns the first load.

Clear the resolved cache entry before the native require when `moduleCache` is disabled. The existing Bun/tryNative path already did this after a native load; the non-transpile Node path did not.

Fixes #418

Test plan

  • Fail-then-pass: write `config.js` exporting `{ n: 1 }`, load it, rewrite as `{ n: 2 }`, load again
  • Before the fix the second load stayed `{ n: 1 }`; after the fix it is `{ n: 2 }`
  • `pnpm vitest run test/module-cache.test.ts`

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed module loading when module caching is disabled, ensuring updated CommonJS files are reloaded correctly.
    • Improved asynchronous module loading by falling back to native imports when CommonJS loading is unavailable.
    • Improved handling of native modules and module identifiers that cannot be resolved immediately.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for reloading changed modules through both direct loading and asynchronous imports.

Plain .js files skip transpile and go through native require, which
keeps Node's module cache even when moduleCache is false. Drop the
resolved cache entry before requiring so a changed JS config reloads
in the same process. TypeScript files were already re-evaluated.

📝 Walkthrough

Jiti now clears the native require cache when moduleCache is disabled. Synchronous and asynchronous loads reload modified CommonJS files. Tests cover both paths, and Vitest includes the new test file.

Changes: Module cache invalidation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native require cache invalidation
src/require.ts
When moduleCache is disabled, nativeImportOrRequire removes the resolved module from the CommonJS cache. Asynchronous loads try require() before falling back to native import().
CommonJS reload regression coverage
test/module-cache.test.ts, vitest.config.ts
Tests verify that direct Jiti calls and jiti.import observe changed CommonJS exports. Vitest includes the new test file.

With moduleCache disabled, native CommonJS files now reload after modification in both synchronous and asynchronous loads, and the tests cover both paths. No merge-blocking risk remains.

Explanation

Issue #418 requires fsCache: false and moduleCache: false to reload modified JavaScript files in the same process. src/require.ts now resolves and deletes the CommonJS cache entry before nativeRequire when moduleCache is false. The tests rewrite a .js file and verify { n: 2 } through direct Jiti loading and jiti.import.
