Fixes #477.

getCache stores an entry with writeFileSync(cacheFilePath, ...) and treats an entry as a hit when it ends with the source hash. writeFileSync truncates the file before it writes, so when one process stores while another reads the same entry, the reader can get a file that has the right length and the right tail but zeros in the middle. It passes the hit check and then fails with SyntaxError: Invalid or unexpected token, as described in the issue.

The entry is now written to a temporary file next to it (<entry>.<pid>.<random>.tmp) and renamed over the target, which replaces it in one step on POSIX, so a reader sees either the old complete entry or the new one. If the write or rename fails the temporary file is removed and the failure is only logged with debug. Skipping the store is fine here because the cache is best effort, and on Windows a rename over a file another process has open can fail while that process has just stored an entry for the same source anyway. I did not add a check for NUL bytes on read, as the issue also says that would only hide the problem.

I added test/cache.test.ts and registered it in vitest.config.ts. It checks that an entry is stored and reused, that replacing an entry never calls writeFileSync on the entry path itself, that no .tmp files are left behind, and that a failing rename still returns the code and cleans up. The replace and failing rename tests fail on main. A real race is not deterministic enough for a unit test, so I did not try to reproduce it with processes. After pnpm build the full vitest run passes (43 tests), and eslint, prettier and tsgo --noEmit are clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Cache updates are now written safely, reducing the risk of incomplete cache files.
    • Temporary files are removed when cache updates fail, where possible.
    • Cache write and cleanup failures are logged without interrupting the application.
    • If a cache update fails, the current request can still return freshly transformed code.

The entry was written with a plain writeFileSync, which truncates the
file before filling it. Another process reading at that moment could see
a half written entry that still ends with the expected hash comment, so
it passed the hit check and failed to parse with NUL bytes in it. Write to
a temporary file in the cache directory and rename it over the entry.

📝 Walkthrough

Cache entries are written to a unique temporary file and renamed over the cache path. Store and cleanup failures are logged without preventing getCache from returning rebuilt code. New tests cover reuse, replacement, and failure cases.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cache replacement and validation
src/cache.ts, test/cache.test.ts, vitest.config.ts
getCache stores entries through a temporary file and rename instead of writing directly to the cache path. If storage fails, it attempts temporary-file cleanup and logs failures without propagating the store error. Tests cover reuse, replacement, rebuilds, and replacement or cleanup failures. Vitest includes the new test file.

Atomic replacement improves concurrent-reader safety without adding runtime entrypoints. One conditional security concern remains: replacing an existing cache file can discard restrictive file permissions. Exposure depends on local filesystem configuration; no affected deployment was demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Replacement does not preserve existing cache-file permissions. Unlike rewriting the existing inode, publishing a newly created temporary file can make a previously restricted entry readable to other local users when creation defaults are more permissive and the cache directory is traversable. A private directory or restrictive umask prevents that exposure; no affected production configuration was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated boundary is the local cache filesystem and its consuming process. Cache selection supports a configured directory or project/temporary storage. Cross-tenant, cross-service and privileged deployment exposure were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The introduced conditional disclosure path requires a previously restrictive entry, more permissive temporary-file creation defaults, and another local principal able to traverse the cache directory. Replacement can then expose transformed content. This is not a demonstrated production exploit or an established privilege-escalation path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Directory preparation checks writability but does not explicitly enforce private permissions. Temporary-file creation supplies neither an explicit mode nor preservation of the existing entry's metadata, leaving effective access dependent on filesystem defaults and directory controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Interruption after temporary-file creation but before rename can leave an orphan containing transformed code. The publication helper has no interruption-recovery step, while normal cache reads select only the stable entry path. Operational accumulation and retention impact depend on cache lifetime and external cleanup.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define an explicit cache access policy for replacement files: use private directory/file permissions or preserve required restrictive metadata before publication. Apply protection when creating the temporary file, since protecting only the final name would leave an intermediate exposure window.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(cache): write cache entries atomically" matches the main change. The PR writes cache entries to a uniquely named temporary file and renames it over the target, so readers never see a partial entry. The title names the cache subsystem, the fix type, and the atomic write behavior. It is specific and concise, and it does not contain vague terms.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR meets the coding requirements in issue #477. src/cache.ts writes each cache entry to a unique temporary file beside the target and renames it over the target. Write, rename, and cleanup failures are logged without escaping getCache. The implementation does not use a NUL-byte read workaround. test/cache.test.ts covers reuse, replacement without in-place entry writes, temporary-file cleanup, and failed replacement with failed cleanup.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #477. The production change implements atomic cache replacement and best-effort failure handling. The tests and Vitest registration verify that behavior. No unrelated production behavior or public API change is shown.

Pushed a small follow up for the review note: if the rename fails and removing the temporary file fails as well, the cleanup error is now caught and only logged with debug, so getCache still returns the transformed code. Added a test where both the rename and the removal fail.
