This is tracking some thoughts expressed in #132 with how we move forward with GPU support (and possibly other things).
Mainly, I want to modularize z2d's rendering subsystem more to allow for different types of rendering targets. This is mainly targeted at GPU support, which I want to have reside in implementation-specific repositories (keeps dependencies clean), but it could also be extended to other things as well (Cairo, for example, has different surfaces for things like recording drawing commands or rendering directly to SVG files).
The milestone for this is mainly a commitment to look at how the architecture would look like in this cycle, and possibly will include efforts to enact said architecture and de-couple the CPU renderer (making it ultimately a downstream to it).
See #132 for more thoughts.
