fix: allow sudo helpers within the service sandbox - #9
UI Headscale updates fail with sudo: unable to change to root gid: Operation not permitted because the shipped service clears its capability bounding set. A sudoers grant alone cannot restore the missing identity-switching capabilities.
Allow CAP_SETUID, CAP_SETGID, and CAP_AUDIT_WRITE in the bounding set while keeping the panel unprivileged and retaining its filesystem sandbox. Document an installed-service drop-in and clarify that polkit-only hardening is incompatible with the sudo-based update helper. Agent instructions now require testing sudo helpers under the actual service sandbox.
Validation:
Reproduced the exact reported failure with an empty bounding set in a disposable systemd unit.
Under all shipped sandbox settings, verified the corrected service stays unprivileged, sudo switches to root, and a separate transient root helper can access the host filesystem.
make lint, go test -race ./..., and make size passed (30 MB).
No live Headscale service was stopped or changed during testing.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Configuration
Updated the service’s capability settings to support sudo-based integrations while retaining its sandbox restrictions.
Sudo-based integrations require identity-switching and audit capabilities, with NoNewPrivileges disabled. These settings can be relaxed only when sudo integrations are disabled.
Documentation
Added guidance for updating older service configurations, including applying a systemd drop-in without changing other sandbox settings.
Clarified that privileged Headscale binary installation runs as a separate root systemd job and that tests must not stop or modify a real service.

minimal, and validate.

Walkthrough
The service unit now sets a capability bounding set for sudo integrations. Installation and update guidance explains the required sandbox settings and how to configure older units. Testing instructions cover sandbox requirements and prohibit tests from modifying a real service.
Changes: Sudo capability configuration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Service capability policy deploy/meshpanel.service, docs/install.md
The service unit allows CAP_SETUID, CAP_SETGID, and CAP_AUDIT_WRITE in its capability bounding set. Installation instructions document these capabilities and the conditions for setting NoNewPrivileges.
Legacy unit and test guidance README.md, docs/install.md, AGENTS.md
The README and installation guide describe an override for older units with an empty capability bounding set. The test instructions specify sandbox requirements and prohibit tests from stopping or modifying a real service.
velixio/meshpanel#8: Adds the Headscale update UI and CLI flow that uses the sudo and systemd-run helper addressed by this service configuration.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 74a19
The unit now permits the capabilities sudo helpers need, which should fix Headscale UI updates on newer systemd. On systemd 252 (for example Debian 12), the other sandbox settings can still stop sudo from elevating, so the fix may not work there. The upgrade link in the README also does not resolve for users of an extracted release archive. Resolve or document the older-systemd limitation before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 74a19
The change restores narrowly authorized privileged operations without running the panel as root or removing its filesystem sandbox. The update helper intentionally operates outside that sandbox, making its fixed command policy and trusted configuration important. Compatibility with deployed systemd versions remains unconfirmed.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A compromised panel account could exercise its installed sudo grants independently of the UI owner check. With the optional update grant installed, its reach includes the root helper's configured Headscale executable and state on that host. The fixed command line prevents selecting an arbitrary executable, helper configuration or systemd unit through sudo arguments.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The root updater trusts Headscale's upstream HTTPS release distribution and its checksums.txt, not Meshpanel's signed-release verification. This documented trust contract predates the PR, but now also applies to the operational UI-to-root path under the corrected service ceiling.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Browser cancellation is detached from the installation lifecycle, while the helper retains a bounded timeout. Recovery is not transactional across binary replacement and possible database migration: failed post-start checks report the retained backup for operator-led recovery, as explicitly documented.

Support systemd versions that force NoNewPrivileges.
On systemd 252, the unit’s seccomp settings force NoNewPrivileges=yes after the UID change, even when the unit says no. Sudo therefore cannot elevate, and both the shipped unit and the documented drop-in fail to enable the helpers. systemctl show can still report no. Systemd 255 changed this behavior. Make the upgrade instructions available in release archives.
The release archive includes README.md but not docs/install.md, so this link is broken for users of an extracted tarball. Include the guide in the archive or link to the hosted guide. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
