raycast-gemini: "Ask About Screen Content" and "Ask About Selected Screen Area" exit immediately on GNOME Wayland #325
The following commands from the official raycast-gemini extension do not work under Vicinae on GNOME Wayland:
Ask About Screen Content
Ask About Selected Screen Area
When either command is executed, Vicinae closes normally, the extension starts, but exits almost immediately without capturing a screenshot or launching the Gemini prompt.
Other commands from the same extension work correctly:
✅ AI Chat
✅ Ask About Selected Text
This appears to be isolated to the screenshot implementation.
Investigation
After inspecting the compiled extension code, I found that the screenshot implementation only distinguishes between Windows and "everything else".
On Linux, the extension therefore attempts to execute:
/usr/sbin/screencapture
which only exists on macOS.
As a result:
The child process fails immediately.
The exception is caught.
The command exits almost instantly without capturing a screenshot.
Environment
Vicinae v0.23.1
Manjaro Linux
GNOME 50
Wayland
xdg-desktop-portal installed
xdg-desktop-portal-gnome installed
Additional testing
I confirmed that:
/usr/sbin/screencapture does not exist on Linux.
grim cannot be used on GNOME because GNOME does not implement the wlr-screencopy protocol.
gnome-screenshot fails with:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied:
Screenshot is not allowed
This is expected on modern GNOME Wayland unless the application captures the screen through the XDG Desktop Portal.
Suggestion
Would Vicinae be interested in exposing a Linux-compatible screenshot helper or compatibility API for Raycast extensions?
Alternatively, if there is already a recommended compatibility mechanism for screenshot capture, I'd be happy to adapt raycast-gemini to use it and contribute a PR upstream.
Tested on Raycast
No.
I was not able to test this on the official Raycast application. The issue was observed while running the extension under Vicinae on Linux.
Steps to reproduce
Install the official raycast-gemini extension.
Configure a valid Gemini API key.
Open Vicinae.
Run Ask About Screen Content or Ask About Selected Screen Area.
Observe that the command exits immediately without capturing a screenshot or launching the Gemini prompt.
Verify that AI Chat and Ask About Selected Text continue to work correctly.
Additional notes
This issue is not requesting Linux support for Raycast itself.
Instead, it documents a compatibility gap when running the extension under Vicinae, whose goal is to provide compatibility for Raycast extensions on Linux.
I'm happy to help test potential fixes or contribute a patch if there's a recommended compatibility mechanism for screenshot capture in Vicinae.
