fix(tui): stop the input/status band from ghosting after a layout change - #418
The TUI could show the input placeholder and/or the status line two or three times, stacked above the real one:
[ ●●● ] Processing... (ESC to cancel) · 46.5 tok/s
● Done in 78.7s · 47.7 tok/s
Ask anything... "What is the tech stack of this project?"
Ask anything... "What is the tech stack of this project?"
Ask anything... "What is the tech stack of this project?"
It was intermittent and healed itself on a full redraw (reload), which is the fingerprint of the renderer's per-row cache, not of View().
Root cause
View() is fine — the frame is exactly height lines and no line is wider than width cells by ansi.StringWidth (that invariant now has its own test). The problem is the incremental renderer (standardRenderer): it paints row by row and skips the rows whose text did not change, which assumes one frame line is exactly one screen row. Two things break that assumption:
The layout moves. When the bottom block (status line, queue band, autocomplete popup, input bar, bottom bar) shifts by one or more rows, a row that changed meaning keeps the previous frame's text. The status line becoming a blank margin, or the input bar moving down, is exactly such a row.
The terminal measures a line wider than the TUI does. An East Asian "ambiguous" glyph (●, →, ·) that the terminal draws two cells wide makes a line that is synchronised by ansi.StringWidthwrap, pushing every row below it down by one. From that point on the renderer writes to rows it believes in and the rows it skips keep whatever the older frame left there — the ghost rows in the screenshot.
Reproduced deterministically with a pty harness + a VT emulator that draws ambiguous glyphs double width: a frame line the terminal measures one cell wider desyncs the grid exactly like this, and the same frame under \x1b[?7l stays clean.
Fix
(1) One full repaint per layout change — pkg/tui/frame_layout.go
View() records the frame's vertical structure (width/height, viewport height, queue-band rows, autocomplete rows, welcome, modal). Model.Update compares it with the value it last asked the renderer to paint and, when it differs, re-sends its own tea.WindowSizeMsg — which is what makes standardRenderer.repaint() drop its per-row cache.
No tea.ClearScreen: that blanks the screen for a tick (a visible flash); a WindowSizeMsg only resets the cache.
Cannot loop: the model re-applies the same geometry, so the layout value does not change again and no second repaint is requested.
Costs nothing in the steady state: streaming into a frame that does not move records the same value and requests nothing.
(2) Autowrap off for the session — pkg/tui/nowrap.go + cmd/lele/tui.go
DisableAutowrap(out) (restore func()) sends \x1b[?7l (DECAWM off) and the returned, idempotent restore sends \x1b[?7h. Wired in tuiCmd as a defer, additionally called before the os.Exit(1) of the render-error path, and only when stdout is a real terminal (tuiTerminalOutput()), so a redirected stream never receives escape codes. With autowrap off an over-wide line loses its last cell at the right margin instead of pushing the whole frame down — cosmetic, versus corrupting every row below it.
Evidence
Same pty script (a turn, a queued message, settle), replayed through the VT emulator with ambiguous glyphs as double width:
build
duplicate placeholder rows
duplicate status rows
settled frame
before
19
24
two Ask anything… rows
after
1

clean
Clean exit verified in the capture: the stream ends with \x1b[?1049l\x1b[?25h\x1b[?7h (autowrap restored after leaving the alt screen).
Tests
pkg/tui/frame_layout_test.go — a layout change (autocomplete opening/closing, resize, welcome switch) requests exactly one repaint at the current size; four consecutive frames with a stable layout request none.
pkg/tui/nowrap_test.go — the two sequences, an idempotent restore, and a nil writer.
pkg/tui/frame_invariant_test.go — 13 states × 8 sizes: View() returns exactly height lines and no line exceeds width cells, with a comment on why the terminal can still disagree (that is what (2) is for).
go build ./..., go vet, golangci-lint (0 issues) and go test ./pkg/tui/... ./cmd/lele/... are green on top of origin/main (a8a114d5).
Docs

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed duplicated input and status rows that could appear when the terminal resized or the interface layout changed.
Improved text rendering in terminals with different character-width settings. Terminal display behavior is restored when the interface closes.
Prevented terminal control sequences from appearing when output is redirected.
Documentation
Added troubleshooting guidance for display issues that persist, including details to share when reporting them.
The TUI could end up showing the input placeholder or the status line two or
three times, stacked above the real one (see the reported screenshot: three
`Ask anything…` rows with a `processing` and a `done` status line above them).
`standardRenderer` paints the frame row by row and keeps a per-row cache, so it
only writes the rows whose text changed. That cache assumes one frame line is
exactly one screen row, and two things broke that assumption:
1. **The layout moved.** When the bottom block (status line, queue band,
autocomplete popup, input bar, bottom bar) shifts by one or more rows, the
rows that changed meaning can keep the previous frame's text. The model now
records the frame's vertical structure while rendering (width/height,
viewport height, queue rows, autocomplete rows, welcome, modal) and, when it
differs from the last value it asked the renderer to paint, re-sends its own
window size — which makes `standardRenderer.repaint()` drop the per-row
cache without the flash `tea.ClearScreen` causes and without looping, since
re-applying the same geometry leaves the layout unchanged. A stable layout
requests nothing, so the incremental renderer stays incremental.
2. **The terminal measured a line wider than the TUI did.** An East Asian
"ambiguous" glyph (●, →, ·) that the terminal draws two cells wide makes a
line that is correct by `ansi.StringWidth` wrap, pushing every row below it
down by one and desyncing the renderer's row model for good. The terminal's
autowrap (DECAWM, mode 7) is now off for the duration of the TUI session and
restored on every exit path (ctrl+c, /quit, the `os.Exit` error path and the
deferred one), and only when stdout is a real terminal. The excess cell is
clipped at the right margin instead of corrupting the frame below it.
Verified with a pty harness against a VT emulator that draws ambiguous glyphs
double width (scripted turn plus a queued message): 19 duplicated placeholder
rows and 24 duplicated status rows before, one of each after, and the settled
frame is clean.
Tests: `frame_layout_test.go` (one repaint per layout change, none while the
layout is stable), `nowrap_test.go` (the mode sequences and an idempotent
restore) and `frame_invariant_test.go` (a state × size matrix asserting the
frame is exactly `height` lines and no line is wider than `width` cells).
The TUI now requests a repaint when its layout changes and disables terminal autowrap while it owns a real terminal. Tests check repaint behavior, frame dimensions, and autowrap restoration. Documentation describes duplicated TUI rows and the related changes.
The model records layout dimensions and row counts. View updates the layout, and Update batches a window-size command when the layout changes. Same-size window messages skip viewport updates. Tests cover repaint behavior and frame dimensions. Documentation describes duplicated rows and the related changes.
Control terminal autowrap pkg/tui/nowrap.go, pkg/tui/nowrap_test.go, cmd/lele/tui.go
The TUI disables autowrap on character-device stdout and restores it after Bubble Tea exits. Tests check the escape sequences and idempotent restoration.
A resize can briefly leave the TUI rendered at stale dimensions; replace the captured-size repaint command before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to f881b
Risk is low and confined to the local terminal. A delayed repaint can reuse outdated screen dimensions, while cleanup after exceptional interruptions is not fully established. The inspected changes do not expand permissions or remote access.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · inferred: A repaint command captures dimensions and later delivers them as an authoritative WindowSizeMsg. If a real resize is processed first, the delayed repaint can overwrite the newer model dimensions and invalidate caches using stale geometry. The same-size shortcut does not reject this stale message. This weakens resize recovery and terminal-state ownership; the demonstrated scope is local display consistency, not an authorization bypass.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated new effects are confined to the interactive process and its local terminal display. Targeted caller inspection did not substantiate propagation to remote services, data stores, or additional privileged consumers; bounded graph coverage does not prove their universal absence.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The changed repaint path updates geometry and caches rather than approval or session identity. Existing input gating still disables chat focus while approval is pending and routes approval keys ahead of normal input.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Explicit restoration before the os.Exit error path limits terminal-mode leakage on ordinary failures. It does not establish restoration during suspension, forced termination, or failed writes; those recovery guarantees remain incomplete.

Convert the DisableAutowrap tests to a table-driven test.
DisableAutowrap is exported behaviour in pkg/tui. The path instructions require table-driven tests for it. This file uses two separate test functions. Merge them into one table with these cases: writer, nil writer, and repeated restore. Give each case its expected output and restore call count.
As per path instructions: "Exported behaviour must be covered by table-driven tests."

…aints cheap
Review follow-ups to #418:
* The restore now runs as soon as `p.Run()` returns. Relying on the `defer`
alone left autowrap off while `shutdownTUI` joined (up to `tuiExitJoinGrace`)
and while the "Resume with -s" hint was printed — a hint that carries a full
command line and would be clipped at the right margin on a narrow terminal.
The deferred call stays for the early returns between there and the end, and
the restore is idempotent.
* `handleWindowSizeMsg` no longer treats a message carrying the current size as
a resize. That message exists only to make the renderer drop its per-row
cache (see `consumeLayoutRepaint`); dropping every render cache and
re-materializing the viewport for it was an O(lines) rebuild of content whose
inputs did not change, paid on every band toggle. A real resize keeps the
full path, and the geometry a band change introduces is still caught by the
render path (`syncViewportForFrame` → `viewportGeometryChanged`).
`TestSameSizeWindowMessageDoesNotRebuildTheViewport` pins both halves with the
`onViewportRebuild` hook: zero rebuilds for the same size, at least one for a
real resize.
Do not replay dimensions captured before the repaint command runs.
Bubble Tea v1.3.10 runs batched commands asynchronously. A terminal resize can update the model before this command executes. The captured WindowSizeMsg can then overwrite the newer dimensions and render one or more frames with stale geometry.
Use tea.WindowSize() to query the terminal size through Bubble Tea's current resize path.
