Kosh

Kosh is a modern, fast, and feature-rich custom Windows file explorer built with Tauri v2 and React. Designed with a clean, dark-themed, and frameless user interface, it provides a powerful alternative to the native Windows File Explorer, focusing on productivity and seamless navigation.

• Dual View Modes: Choose between macOS Finder-style Miller Columns for deep directory traversal or a traditional Windows-style TreeView/List view with resizable columns and natural sorting.
• Rich File Previews: Built-in Preview Panel supports instant viewing of various file types without opening external applications:
  • Images (JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF, RAW, PSD, etc.)
  • Video & Audio playback
  • Documents (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, Markdown, Plain Text)
• Drive & Bookmarks Panel: Quick access to local, network, and removable drives, along with a dedicated Recycle Bin view and customizable user bookmarks.
• Advanced Context Menus: Native-feeling context menus for files, folders, and empty spaces, including support for native Windows properties, "Open with", and quick zipping/unzipping.
• Keyboard-First Navigation: Comprehensive keyboard shortcuts for creating folders, renaming, navigating directories, toggling panels, and managing tabs.
• Performance-Oriented: Leverages a Rust backend for lightning-fast file system operations and React virtual scrolling for smooth rendering of massive directories.

Development Setup

To run Kosh locally, ensure you have Node.js, Rust, and the Tauri prerequisites installed on your system.

1. Install dependencies:

   npm install

2. Run in development mode:

   npm run tauri dev

3. Build for production:

   npm run tauri build

Architecture Overview

Kosh communicates heavily between its React frontend and Rust backend using Tauri's IPC (Inter-Process Communication) commands.

• src/: Contains all React components, hooks, and UI logic.
• src-tauri/: Contains the Rust application, native file system listeners, and backend commands.
