[Bug] Built-in image_search MCP tool always returns {"count":0,"results":[],"success":false} for every query (Desktop Linux, official plugin image-search 0.1.1) #912

Description

@AxlAi
  • I searched existing issues and confirmed this isn't a duplicate (queries: image_search, image search, image-search — no results, checked 2026-10-03).
  • I've read CONTRIBUTING.md.

Category · 问题类别

MCP / built-in tool (official image-search plugin, marketplace zcode-plugins-official)

Agent framework · 涉及的 Agent 框架

ZCode Desktop (Electron app, Linux build)

Severity · 严重程度

中 · Medium — the tool is 100% unusable; core coding flow is unaffected.

Reproducibility · 复现频率

必现 · Always (4/4 distinct queries, hours apart, all on 2026-10-03, identical response every time)

Environment

  • ZCode Desktop for Linux (install at /opt/ZCode, desktop launcher "ZCode"), Ubuntu 24.04, kernel 7.0.0-38-generic x64
  • Plugin: image-search@zcode-plugins-official v0.1.1 (the same MCP server is also bundled in document-skills 0.1.5)
  • MCP transport: HTTP endpoint ${ZCODE_BASE_URL}/api/v1/mcp/server/image_search → https://zcode.z.ai/api/v1/mcp/server/image_search

Description · 问题描述

Every call to the search_image tool returns a well-formed MCP response whose payload is always:

{"count":0,"query":"<query>","ranked":<bool>,"results":[],"success":false}

regardless of query text, count, gl, or rank parameters. Since transport, authentication and the MCP envelope all work, this looks like a relay/backend-side failure (search provider outage, exhausted backend quota, or a plan/region feature flag), not a local configuration problem.

Evidence that it is server-side, not local:

  • Other Z.ai backends work from the same account/machine on the same day (built-in web search tool works; login and coding plan work).
  • Other MCP servers in the same session work fine (context7 with API key, Resend, Paddle live/sandbox/docs, a local stdio MCP server).
  • zcode.z.ai is reachable from the machine.

Steps to reproduce · 复现步骤

  1. Open ZCode Desktop on Linux with the official image-search plugin enabled.
  2. Call the search_image tool with any parameters, e.g. {"query":"sunset","count":2,"gl":"it","rank":false}.
  3. Observe the response: {"count":0,"query":"sunset","ranked":false,"results":[],"success":false}.

Tested on 2026-10-03:

query count gl rank result
guitar fretboard 1 us true success:false, 0 results
sunset 2 it false success:false, 0 results
mountain landscape 1 us false success:false, 0 results

Expected · 预期结果

success:true with a non-empty results array of image URLs, as implied by the tool's response shape. If image_search is intentionally disabled/deprecated or gated by plan/region, a distinct error code or message (instead of a silent empty success:false) would make diagnosis much easier for users.

Suggested checks · 建议排查方向

  1. Relay-side search provider health / quota for the account.
  2. Whether image_search is gated by plan or region.
  3. Return an explicit error code/message in the payload when the backend fails, so clients can distinguish "no results" from "backend error".
