video_core: skip the instance loop writes the split back ignores - #178
Rebased onto current nx2 (b06d1818ee). Following Zarigis's port, only the instance-loop part is kept: after #184, nx2 has its own versions of the UsageTracker and Nx2MarkGpuWritten changes, so those two commits are dropped.
With the GPU thread split on, the front no longer sends instance-loop writes that the back ignores:
draw.end inside an instance loop: DrawEnd draws nothing in DrawMode::Instance.
vertex_buffer.first and vertex_buffer.count when unchanged. They are instance-loop methods, so they flush no deferred draw, and the draw manager only reads them.
index_buffer writes are still always sent, because they also mark the index buffer dirty (CodeRabbit).
The front tracks the instance loop with the value the back acts on: the shadow word in Replay mode, and every word of a multi-method draw.begin batch (Zarigis, 994b99c35b).
Ocarina of Time sends about 520,000 draw.end and 390,000 same-value vertex_buffer.count writes a second.
Testing
Ocarina of Time (0400486024DEC000) only, GPU accuracy Low so the split is on.

The changes update UsageTracker page tracking, add loop-aware filtering for selected same-value writes on the split-GPU front, and mark GPU-written page ranges in word-sized chunks.
Changes: Page usage tracking
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Track full page blocks src/video_core/buffer_cache/usage_tracker.h
UsageTracker records fully covered 64-page blocks and checks block and page bits when querying usage. Reset returns early when the tracker has not been touched.
The split-GPU front tracks instance-loop state. FrontWrite can skip selected executable writes when same-value skipping is enabled, shadow RAM retains the value, and the front register matches. draw.end is skipped only during an instance loop.

Update instance_loop for multi-method writes before skipping draw.end.
If FrontCallMultiMethod writes draw.begin with InstanceId::First after a tracked instance loop, the back enters General mode, but fs.instance_loop stays true. A later same-value draw.end is then dropped, so the General-mode draw never runs. Multi-method inline-index writes can cause the same mismatch. Update the loop state on those paths before this skip decision. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Valid: FrontCallMultiMethod sent draw.begin and the inline index methods without updating instance_loop, so a same-value draw.end after a General or InlineIndex begin could be dropped. Fixed in 248450e: both write paths now go through FrontTrackInstanceLoop, and the skip decision stays in FrontWrite.
@tibzejoker Thanks for the update. The inline-index path now updates the loop state, but the draw.begin path still has a replay-mode mismatch.
At Line 1059, FrontCallMultiMethod tracks the last raw argument. In Replay mode, the back uses the shadow value instead. If the shadow value is First and the raw value is Subsequent, the front tracks an instance loop while the back enters General mode. A later same-value draw.end can still be dropped.
Please track each effective draw.begin value after applying shadow RAM. Processing each value also preserves earlier transitions when the last value does not change the mode. A regression test should cover replay mode and multi-word batches.

Valid: in Replay mode the back acts on the shadow copy, so the multi-method path now tracks the loop with fs.shadow[method] there (74fab5d), as FrontWrite already does through its value. Skipping the docstring check: the project doesn't use per-function docstrings.
@tibzejoker Thanks. The Replay-mode change now uses the shadow value.
One part of the multi-word case remains. At Line 1060, the front tracks only the last value. In non-Replay mode, if instance_loop is true and a batch contains First followed by Unchanged, the back enters General mode but the front stays in instance mode. A later same-value draw.end can still be dropped.
Please track each effective draw.begin value and add a regression test for that sequence.
Understood on docstrings. The saved coverage result is a warning, not a blocking gate.

Track the replayed draw.begin value.
If shadow RAM is in Replay mode, base_start[amount - 1] can differ from the value the back uses. For example, a raw Subsequent value with a shadowed First value sets fs.instance_loop to true while the back enters General mode. The front can then drop a same-value draw.end, so the General draw does not run. Pass the effective shadow value to FrontTrackInstanceLoop in Replay mode. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

If an inline draw follows an index_buffer.count write, it can leave the inline index buffer cached. A same-value index_buffer.first write no longer marks the binding dirty. A subsequent general indexed draw can then use the inline buffer instead of the guest index buffer.

Re the outside-diff comment on index_buffer.first: valid. index_buffer writes also mark the index buffer dirty (dirty_flags.cpp:32), so dropping a same-value one after an inline index draw could leave the inline buffer bound. Fixed in 95a227b: index_buffer.first is always sent now. vertex_buffer.first/count have no dirty table entry, so they are still skipped.

I measured the instance-loop part of this PR on current nx2 (5f6066b, after #184). I ported only b22ebf0, 248450e, 74fab5d and 95a227b, and kept nx2's own usage_tracker.h and nx2.h, since #184 has its own versions of the UsageTracker and Nx2MarkGpuWritten changes.
Ocarina of Time, Kokiri porch, built-in Max Resolution on, GPU accuracy Low, split on, EDEN_NX2_SPLIT_VERIFY=1, one run each from the same save:
FPS: 28.8 → 30.6 (+6%)
Back-thread methods: 3.49M → 3.07M/s, with draw.end 374k → 56k/s and vertex_buffer.count 296k → 0. Draws/s went up from 46.7k to 49.8k.
Split verify: 0 differences in 8,961 front register checks.
Since #184 landed, the instance-loop commits look like the part of this PR that still adds something. It might be worth rebasing to just those.
I used Claude Code (Opus 5.5) to port, run and profile this, and to draft this comment.
The port I measured is on zarigis/Lichii port/pr178-instance-loop, on nx2 5f6066b. Your four instance-loop commits are there, with only the first one trimmed and reworded. Feel free to take it as a starting point for a rebase.
I used Claude Code (Opus 5.5) to prepare this branch and draft this comment.
Confirming CodeRabbit's last point; it also applies to my port. DrawManager::DrawBegin runs for every word of a multi-method batch (First → General, Subsequent → Instance, Unchanged keeps the mode). FrontCallMultiMethod, though, tracks only base_start[amount - 1]. So with the front in an instance loop, a batch [draw.begin First, draw.begin Unchanged] puts the back in General while the front stays in instance mode, and a later same-value single draw.end is dropped. Calling FrontTrackInstanceLoop for each word inside the existing per-word loop, with the value it already computes (the shadow word in Replay), would fix it. Ocarina doesn't seem to send draw.begin that way, so neither our runs nor SPLIT_VERIFY could catch it.
I used Claude Code (Opus 5.5) to check this and draft this comment.
Port Eglantine PR zortos293#178 (Eglantine-Community/Eglantine#178). The helper guard now matches the 8/16-bit storage emitters, including descriptor-aliasing and storage-width capabilities.
The captured Bananza vertex environment at v47 cache offset 890894 aborted in Sirit::OpFunctionCall before this change and now compiles and passes spirv-val under Vulkan 1.2.

With the GPU thread split, the front no longer sends the instance loop writes the back
ignores: draw.end inside an instance loop (DrawEnd draws nothing in DrawMode::Instance)
and unchanged vertex_buffer.first/count (instance loop methods, so they flush no deferred
draw, and the draw manager only reads them). Ocarina of Time sends ~520,000 draw.end and
~390,000 same-value vertex_buffer.count writes a second.
Ported from zortos293#178 (b22ebf0) onto nx2 5f6066b with only the split-front part; nx2
already has its own UsageTracker and Nx2MarkGpuWritten changes. Ocarina of Time, Kokiri
porch, Max Resolution on, GPU accuracy Low: 28.8 -> 30.6 fps, EDEN_NX2_SPLIT_VERIFY=1
with 0 differences.

FrontCallMultiMethod sends draw.begin and inline index writes without FrontWrite, so the
front's instance_loop could stay set after a General or InlineIndex draw began, and drop the
draw.end that draws it. Both paths now update the state; the skip decision stays in FrontWrite.

index_buffer writes also mark the index buffer dirty; dropping a same-value one after an inline
index draw could leave the inline buffer bound for the next indexed draw (CodeRabbit).

Port of zortos293#178 (its five commits in one, merged with the
macro DMA front reads already here). The split front tracks whether the
back's draw manager is in an instance loop (draw.begin's instance id and
inline index draws, for every word of a multi-method write) and drops
same-value draw.end, vertex_buffer.first and vertex_buffer.count writes
that the back would ignore. index_buffer.first is always sent.

From zortos293#178 (tibzejoker): Ocarina sends about 520,000
draw.end and 390,000 same-value vertex_buffer.count writes a second. In
an instance loop DrawEnd draws nothing, and unchanged vertex_buffer.first
and count only store their value, so the front no longer sends them.
Also marks GPU-written pages a 64-bit word at a time.
Changed from the PR: a multi-word draw.begin tracks the loop state word by
word (the back runs each word), so a First followed by another word can't
leave the front believing it is still in a loop and drop a real draw.
The PR's UsageTracker block bits are not taken: perf-9's FillPages and
the tracked flag already cover them.

Heads-up for GCC builds: since this PR, nx2 built with GCC 13.3 (-O3) shows a black screen at boot in Ocarina of Time. Every split-front macro fails with instruction outside uploaded RAM. The code here is correct. GCC unswitches FrontCallMultiMethod's loop on the inlined FrontTrackInstanceLoop switch, and the loop it keeps for the other methods drops the load_mme cases, so AddCode is never called. MSVC and clang builds are fine. Bisect, object-file evidence and a one-line fix ([[gnu::noinline]] on the helper) are in #491.
Thanks @celmax85 for the bisect and the object-file evidence. I read #491. Keeping FrontTrackInstanceLoop out of line costs nothing measurable, since it runs once per method on the front, and it doesn't change behaviour on MSVC or clang. It looks good to me.
GCC 13's loop unswitching drops the load_mme.instruction and
load_mme.instruction_ptr cases from Maxwell3D::FrontCallMultiMethod once #178
added a second switch on the invariant method, so the split front ran macros
from empty RAM on Linux release builds (#500). Add a regression test for macro
uploads sent as one multi-method run.

GCC 13.3 at -O3 unswitches the per-word loop of FrontCallMultiMethod on the
switch that zortos293#178 inlined into it. The loop that the other methods take then
has no case for the macro upload methods: load_mme.instruction never reaches
AddCode, the front's macro RAM stays empty, and every Turing macro fails with
"instruction outside uploaded RAM" (black screen at boot in Ocarina of Time).
In the object file the function has no AddCode or ClearCode call left; with
the helper kept out of line both are back. MSVC and clang builds are not
affected.

* video_core: skip instance loop writes the split back ignores
With the GPU thread split, the front no longer sends the instance loop writes the back
ignores: draw.end inside an instance loop (DrawEnd draws nothing in DrawMode::Instance)
and unchanged vertex_buffer.first/count (instance loop methods, so they flush no deferred
draw, and the draw manager only reads them). Ocarina of Time sends ~520,000 draw.end and
~390,000 same-value vertex_buffer.count writes a second.
Ported from zortos293#178 (b22ebf0) onto nx2 5f6066b with only the split-front part; nx2

* video_core: track the instance loop state on multi-method writes too
FrontCallMultiMethod sends draw.begin and inline index writes without FrontWrite, so the
front's instance_loop could stay set after a General or InlineIndex draw began, and drop the
draw.end that draws it. Both paths now update the state; the skip decision stays in FrontWrite.

index_buffer writes also mark the index buffer dirty; dropping a same-value one after an inline
index draw could leave the inline buffer bound for the next indexed draw (CodeRabbit).

* video_core: track the instance loop for every word of a multi-method write
The back's DrawBegin runs per word; tracking only the last word left the front in an instance loop after [First, Unchanged], so a later same-value draw.end was dropped.

next commit adds a second switch on the invariant method, so the split front

Port of Zortos zortos293#178 (7e2a9fe), which measured Ocarina of Time on the Kokiri
porch going from 28.8 to 30.6 fps with EDEN_NX2_SPLIT_VERIFY=1 finding no
differences. Here, Link's house at native resolution on an RTX 3050 Laptop: the
~374,000 draw.end and ~327,000 vertex_buffer.count writes a second no longer
reach the back, and the game ran at 31.3 fps before and after; its frames wait
on other things on this machine. Adds a test of what the front sends.

…ng, live switches (Frizti 6bec823)
Opt-in EDEN_NX2_SEM_FAST=1|2 (acquires read through queued fence releases without a drain; Frizti BuiltinSwitches: 2) and EDEN_NX2_LIST_FAST=1|2 (GP entries skip the writer wait once no page was newly GPU-written for 2 s; not in BuiltinSwitches); debug server 'switch' method sets them live. EDEN_NX2_DMA_WAIT_WRITERS and EDEN_NX2_LOOP_SKIP are registered but read nowhere, as at Frizti's tip (LOOP_SKIP's behaviour is our zortos293#178). Frizti: Kokiri spawn ~31-34 -> ~49 fps with all on. Not ported: the GpuSplit::NoteWrite/Effect context this commit touched (absent here).

102 upstream commits since 09b78bd, among them HMMA on cooperative

for Ocarina (zortos293#606), Ocarina's AA bypass as merged (zortos293#616), GPU thread pinning
(zortos293#418, zortos293#530), bound table-pointer pools by the storage buffer reach (zortos293#351),
CPU writes kept over GPU downloads (zortos293#397), up to 64 storage buffers (6645721),
host-aligned bindless handle reads (zortos293#245) and the fixes tuned4 carried as
open PRs (zortos293#250, zortos293#412, zortos293#413, zortos293#427, zortos293#436, zortos293#438, zortos293#440, zortos293#465, zortos293#485, zortos293#495, zortos293#550).
Conflicts:
- thread.cpp, gpu_thread.cpp, gpu_split.cpp: our hybrid-CPU core roles stay;
upstream's pin_gpu_threads (off by default) pins on top when enabled.
- Shader handle programs: the per-element descriptor arrays and upstream's
storage alignment both apply (StorageBufferBase aligns the base; callers
pass the alignment and the element). JoinStorageInfo keeps the binding map
and takes the stage's storage buffer limit.
- Texture cache collector: upstream's out-of-memory path with our pending
download accounting (used_memory()).
- Cache invalidations: upstream's ClaimCpuWrites first, then each cache's
lock once for all ranges.
- Our 256 MiB table-pointer cap gives way to zortos293#351's storage buffer reach.
- FlushQueryResults keeps the timed wait; macro DMA reads flush pending
reports only when the read covers report pages.
- zortos293#178's instance loop skip keeps writes while the back's sink holds state
writes, as our instance store skip does.

…ont (EDEN_NX2_EXP2)
State registers written with their value were already dropped on the front (FrontSkipSame)
and the back, and instance loop writes since zortos293#178. Of the same-value writes that still reach
the back in Ocarina of Time, index_buffer.first (~115k/s, all same-value) is the only one whose
back execution is a register store plus Dirty::IndexBuffer: draw.begin/end, constant buffer
data and binds, reports, clear_report_value, render_enable.mode and index_buffer.count act.
The flag is set again by the index_buffer.count write every register-indexed draw needs, so the
write is sent while an inline or small index draw came after the last count write.
EDEN_NX2_EXP2=1 also logs writes sent and not sent every ~5 s.

… Maxwell3D
From zortos293#488 (9010ecd, mstampfli), second half: SkipSameValueWrites()
and Nx2Perf::Verify() run for every 3D method on the back and kept their value in a
function-local static, so each call checked its initialization guard (0.9% and 0.3%
of the back thread in their profile).
Adapted: the PR reads both into namespace-scope statics at static initialization,
which runs before main() loads nx2_switches.txt (LoadNx2Switches), so a switch file
setting either would be missed. Here Maxwell3D reads them in its constructor into
members. Other Nx2Perf::Verify() callers are unchanged.

purpose (it sets Dirty::IndexBuffer; our EDEN_NX2_EXP2 is the guarded version).

From zortos293#491 (c2c3fdb, Celmax), the fix for zortos293#178 on GCC: GCC 13.3
-O3 inlined FrontTrackInstanceLoop into FrontCallMultiMethod's per-word loop,
unswitched that loop on its switch, and lost the load_mme cases: no macro reached
AddCode and Ocarina booted to a black screen ("instruction outside uploaded RAM").
Our port of zortos293#178 (bd27dc7) tracks the loop before the per-word loop, so the
pattern GCC broke is not here; taken as insurance for Linux GCC builds. Adapted:
only GCC sees the attribute. clang (clang-cl too) honours [[gnu::noinline]], and
the Windows builds would otherwise pay a call per FrontWrite.

* video_core: bind no texture for a handle word that is a storage buffer address
Ocarina of Time's water material (shader 68d269bc849da37c, the Zora's River
waterfall and other water) samples a light's texture in a clustered light loop:
the handle is loaded per pixel from the light buffer, so no draw-time handle
program can compute it. The translation then falls back to the first constant
buffer word on the handle's path, c0[0x520], which is the light buffer's
address. Its low bits named an unrelated texture (an HDR render target, a zero
water simulation map), and the game double-buffers that buffer, so the texture
changed every frame and the water flickered every other frame in bursts.
A texture whose handle word is where a storage buffer of the same program keeps
its address now gets the null view and sampler.

Adapted: unconditional. The fork's EDEN_NX2_EXP21 switch (default on) is dropped, since nx2

* video_core: keep two idle upload staging buffers per level up to 32 MiB
Walking through Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time, single uploads of new 2D images held a draw's
setup for 2-68 ms. Upload staging buffers are now kept, two idle per level up to 32 MiB (under
128 MiB), instead of being freed at each 64-frame sweep: uploads over 8 MiB miss the stream
buffer and got a new dedicated allocation after every pause.
This is bit 1 of the fork's EDEN_NX2_EXP8 (7d75f91, on by default there), taken alone and
unconditional. Its other bits (skipping uploads a join copy overwrites, banded unswizzling, no
HintCold) are not taken.
(cherry picked from commit 7d75f91, staging pool part only)
* tests: a page filter mark past its space leaves the tracked range untouched
The page filter test imported from the fork (c63b0b1) expects the first version of #250,
where a mark past the 36-bit space set an overflow flag that made every query answer yes.
nx2 has #250's later commit 65e3a09, which leaves such ranges untracked so images
without CPU backing don't switch the filter off. Check that behaviour instead.
* fence_manager: no branch hint on the fence decision profile check
docs/Coding.md leaves branch likelihood to PGO.

Adapted: unconditional. The fork's EDEN_NX2_EXP21 switch (default on) is dropped, since nx2
doesn't merge experiment switches.

* tests: a page filter mark past its space leaves the tracked range untouched
The page filter test imported from the fork (c63b0b1) expects the first version of zortos293#250,
where a mark past the 36-bit space set an overflow flag that made every query answer yes.
nx2 has zortos293#250's later commit 65e3a09, which leaves such ranges untracked so images
without CPU backing don't switch the filter off. Check that behaviour instead.
* fence_manager: no branch hint on the fence decision profile check
docs/Coding.md leaves branch likelihood to PGO.

Changes
Rebased onto current
nx2(b06d1818ee). Following Zarigis's port, only the instance-loop part is kept: after #184,nx2has its own versions of theUsageTrackerandNx2MarkGpuWrittenchanges, so those two commits are dropped. With the GPU thread split on, the front no longer sends instance-loop writes that the back ignores:
draw.endinside an instance loop:DrawEnddraws nothing inDrawMode::Instance.vertex_buffer.firstandvertex_buffer.countwhen unchanged. They are instance-loop methods, so they flush no deferred draw, and the draw manager only reads them.index_bufferwrites are still always sent, because they also mark the index buffer dirty (CodeRabbit). The front tracks the instance loop with the value the back acts on: the shadow word in Replay mode, and every word of a multi-method
draw.beginbatch (Zarigis,994b99c35b).Ocarina of Time sends about 520,000
draw.endand 390,000 same-valuevertex_buffer.countwrites a second.Testing
Ocarina of Time (
