video_core: keep same-value instance stores while the back's sink holds state writes - #488
nx2 now drops same-value instance loop stores itself (FrontSkipsLoopWrite: vertex_buffer.first, vertex_buffer.count, and draw.end inside an instance loop), which covers what the first version of this PR did, and #778 reads the per-method switches once (the other part of the previous version). What is left is a correctness fix on top of FrontSkipsLoopWrite:
Keep those stores while state writes wait in the back's sink. Outside a macro, the back's method sink can hold state writes when one of these stores arrives. Its next executable method consumes them, and a changed one ends a deferred draw. With the store dropped and the stream turning to another engine, nothing consumes the sink, so a compute dispatch could run before the draw (the case CodeRabbit found on the earlier version). The front now tracks whether the sink holds writes: a state write sent outside a macro sets it; macro writes (Direct, which consume first), executable methods and method runs clear it. FrontSkipsLoopWrite only skips while it is clear.
Restart. While the split is stopped, state writes go to the sink without reaching the front's copy, and the front is only handed back once they are consumed. GpuSplit::Starts() counts starts; a front copied during an earlier start is handed back (after a drain) and copied again.
Testing
Linux (vast.ai box): RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB, driver 570.211, i5-12400F, Ubuntu 24.04, GCC 13 Release, Xvfb. Ocarina of Time (0400486024DEC000), Kokiri Forest save, on nx2 794602b.
EDEN_NX2_SPLIT_VERIFY=1: 13,889 front register checks, 0 differences (nx2: 14,401, 0). Both log the same few shadow RAM register lines (0x200, 0x201, 0x204, 0x646, 0x782, 0x783), so those are not from this PR.
fps at three fixed views (spawn, forest after a 300-frame turn, after a 150-frame walk), n=2 each: nx2 31.7 / 30.4 / 36.1, this PR 31.1 / 30.2 / 37.2. Within the noise: this is a correctness fix, not a speedup.
Screenshots at the same views differ from nx2 no more than two nx2 runs differ from each other.
Unit tests (on the previous base bf4c42e): 889 test cases, 888 passed, 1 skipped.
Not tested: Windows (CI builds it), other games, a split restart in a running game (I followed the code path only).
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Maxwell3D now tracks GPU split generations and pending method-sink writes when managing front-state copies and deciding whether to skip loop-method writes. Same-value skipping and performance verification settings are initialized at class or namespace scope.
Changes: Maxwell front-state and write handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Track split generations for front copies src/video_core/gpu_split.h, src/video_core/gpu_split.cpp, src/video_core/engines/maxwell_3d.cpp
GpuSplit counts starts. Maxwell3D records the generation for each front-state copy and drains and releases a copy when its generation no longer matches.
Track pending writes when skipping loop methods src/video_core/engines/maxwell_3d.cpp
FrontState tracks pending method-sink writes. FrontWrite and FrontCallMultiMethod update this state. FrontSkipsLoopWrite does not skip a loop-method write while sink writes are pending.
zortos293/Lichii#166: Both changes use pending method-sink state to determine whether same-value writes can be skipped.
zortos293/Lichii#438: Both changes address reuse of stale front state after GPU split restarts.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title is a short, single sentence that names a real aspect of the change: same-value instance stores are kept while the back thread's method sink holds pending state writes. The objectives describe a PR that drops same-value vertex buffer stores on the split front and reads switches once, so the title is partially related. It does not name the main point of the PR, which is dropping redundant vertex buffer stores to reduce per-method overhead. The title also omits the once-read environment switches. The summary does show the sink-pending logic in FrontSkipsLoopWrite, and the title's wording about keeping stores while the sink holds writes matches that logic. The title is specific enough for a reviewer to find the primary change. Because the title is 84 characters and uses internal terms such as 'back's sink', it is slightly dense.

The split front (FrontWrite) drops a store-only executable write whose value and shadow are
unchanged. topology_override is one, but on the back every method outside the instance loop
draws a pending deferred instance batch first (ProcessDirtyRegisters -> DrawDeferred). With the
write dropped: a draw with vertex_buffer.count 3, a subsequent instance (deferred), the same
topology_override again, vertex_buffer.count 6 (an instance-loop method, no flush), then
draw.begin First, which flushes the deferred instance with count 6 instead of 3.
Upstream zortos293#488 carried that predicate; its second commit 38b9f2e (cherry-picked just before)
keeps topology_override writes. The new test sends that sequence through FrontCallMethod, the
ring and the back (slow and fast dispatch; shadow Track and passthrough; a count or first change
after the write) and compares the recorded draws with direct execution. It fails without
38b9f2e (the deferred draw gets count 6) and passes with it.
Also drops a [[unlikely]] from the same branch (docs/Coding.md).

Gate periodic submission-ready signals on decoder running state. Stop and Finalize clear the pending event; Start resumes notifications. Late decode-worker capacity updates cannot rearm a stopped decoder. Preserve busy results, frame fences and output conversion.
Kirby Air Riders 1.3.3 aborts in ClearSystemEvent on an invalid event type, not on the finalize service result. This candidate addresses the stopped decoder's continuing ready-event signals. Add a real KEvent regression and final queue-state tracing. Reviewed Eglantine nx2 and video PRs zortos293#118, zortos293#488, zortos293#502 and zortos293#503; none contains this stopped-state gate.

* video_core: bind no texture for a handle word that is a storage buffer address
Ocarina of Time's water material (shader 68d269bc849da37c, the Zora's River
waterfall and other water) samples a light's texture in a clustered light loop:
the handle is loaded per pixel from the light buffer, so no draw-time handle
program can compute it. The translation then falls back to the first constant
buffer word on the handle's path, c0[0x520], which is the light buffer's
address. Its low bits named an unrelated texture (an HDR render target, a zero
water simulation map), and the game double-buffers that buffer, so the texture
changed every frame and the water flickered every other frame in bursts.
A texture whose handle word is where a storage buffer of the same program keeps
its address now gets the null view and sampler.

* video_core: keep two idle upload staging buffers per level up to 32 MiB
Walking through Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time, single uploads of new 2D images held a draw's
setup for 2-68 ms. Upload staging buffers are now kept, two idle per level up to 32 MiB (under
128 MiB), instead of being freed at each 64-frame sweep: uploads over 8 MiB miss the stream
buffer and got a new dedicated allocation after every pause.
This is bit 1 of the fork's EDEN_NX2_EXP8 (7d75f91, on by default there), taken alone and
unconditional. Its other bits (skipping uploads a join copy overwrites, banded unswizzling, no
HintCold) are not taken.
(cherry picked from commit 7d75f91, staging pool part only)
* tests: a page filter mark past its space leaves the tracked range untouched
The page filter test imported from the fork (c63b0b1) expects the first version of #250,
where a mark past the 36-bit space set an overflow flag that made every query answer yes.
nx2 has #250's later commit 65e3a09, which leaves such ranges untracked so images

…n the back's sink
FrontSkipsLoopWrite drops vertex_buffer.first, vertex_buffer.count and an
instance loop's draw.end when they keep their value. Outside a macro, the
back's method sink can still hold state writes then: its next executable
method consumes them and a changed one ends a deferred draw. With that
method dropped, a compute dispatch next could run before the draw.
The front now tracks whether the sink holds writes (a state write sent
outside a macro sets it; macro writes, executable methods and method runs
clear it) and only skips while it is clear.
A front copied during an earlier split start is handed back and copied
again: while the split was stopped, state writes went to the sink without
reaching it.

Brings in the 23 nx2 commits from zortos293#792 to zortos293#621 (bf48fe9). Thirteen files conflicted.
Two changes of this branch are now upstream and are dropped here:
- "cmake: reuse a cached CI package when its checksum can't be downloaded" (f3702f3). zortos293#792
records the hash an archive was verified against next to the cached package and uses it
without downloading the sha512sum. CPMUtil.cmake is upstream's. Ours covered one more case: a
cache made before zortos293#792, at the first configure after it, with the release host down. That
configure fails as before zortos293#792; the first one that reaches the host records the hash.
- "vulkan: keep a deferred clear's render pass for the draws after it" (1457bd0). zortos293#699
continues the active pass for every draw on the same framebuffer and render area; ours did
that only for a clear variant without MSAA discards. Without tiler resolves (desktop GPUs)
every deferred clear's variant is such a variant, so the two keep the same passes. On tilers
zortos293#699 also stays in a variant that discards its MSAA attachments, where ending it, as ours did,
loaded attachments that pass had just discarded. RequestRenderpass is upstream's, and
Scheduler's clear_variant member is gone.
The other conflicts keep both sides:
- vk_rasterizer.h: this branch's read entry points (FlushRegionForRead, FinishRead, TraceRead)
next to zortos293#752's pending_tick parameter and IsGpuTickDone.
- vk_rasterizer.cpp, DispatchCompute: zortos293#690 adds publish_collision_map next to
record_read_barrier, which this branch replaced ("vulkan: record a dispatch's barrier in the
dispatch's own command"). publish_collision_map stays, record_read_barrier stays removed.
- vk_rasterizer.cpp, GetFlushArea: zortos293#264 forgets the read traps over a texture cache area, this
branch tags the area's source for the read statistics. Both.
- buffer_cache.h: zortos293#816 marks native compute bindings only as far as their stores reach, this
branch passes the write site to MarkWrittenBuffer. Both, in BindMultiRangeStorage and
BindHostComputeStorageBuffers.
- buffer_cache_base.h: Nx2ReadListCopy's comment keeps this branch's word-exact description and
adds zortos293#752's Pending.
- dma_pusher.h, dma_pusher.cpp: zortos293#752 suspends a channel on a list copy the host GPU hasn't
finished and skips the writer wait when the entry is parsed again. This branch takes
GPU-written macro parameters as placeholders (TakeGpuWrittenListWords), waits only for the
writers before the last sync (WaitForSyncedWriters) and counts list reads
(EDEN_NX2_LIST_STATS). Step tries the placeholders first and then zortos293#752's read, which may
suspend. A resumed read skips WaitForSyncedWriters: it ran before the suspension. The read
statistics wrap the pending-aware read.
- control/scheduler.h, scheduler.cpp, gpu_thread.cpp: zortos293#621 makes ResumePending return whether a
channel moved, to reset the poll timer, as this branch's "video_core: decide Switch 2 acquires
from the split's semaphore view" (188baa1) did. Upstream's names are taken. The poll's
profile zone, PublishSoon and the QMD view takeover after the poll stay.
- puller.cpp: zortos293#687 releases fences again, at most once a millisecond, while an acquire waits
with delayed fence operations. This branch split CanResumeAcquire into the semaphore view
(PollWithoutDrain) and the drained path, and moved the long-wait log into ReportLongWait.
zortos293#687's release goes into the drained path before that log, where upstream has it. The view
needs none: it applies only while releases land at once (ReleasesLandAtOnce), never with
delayed fence operations.
- maxwell_3d.cpp: zortos293#488 tracks whether the back's method sink holds state writes (sink_pending),
this branch sends the same writes with Writes::Noted and notes what they write. Both. A back
macro consumes the sink before it runs, as ProcessMacro does, so sending one clears
sink_pending too.
Interactions checked:
- zortos293#816 and the GPU-written list words: a dispatch from list words (Nx2ListIndirect) has its
slot's placeholders as its grid, small numbers in y and z. BindComputeStorageBuffer resolved
the store extent with them, which marks too few bytes when a store's offset grows with the
group id in y or z: list words and read downloads over the rest would have gone stale. Such
a dispatch's grid now counts as unknown, as an indirect dispatch's does. Everywhere else the
mark leaves out only bytes no store reaches, which no list word or read download depends on.
- zortos293#752 and the word-exact list reads: Nx2ReadListCopy returns Pending only after its word
checks, so lists on words no GPU work wrote still read guest memory without waiting.
EDEN_NX2_LIST_VERIFY reads its reference as before (all writers, waiting for the copy).
EDEN_NX2_ENTRY_CHECK and EDEN_NX2_DRAIN_CHECK look at entries on pages no GPU work wrote,
which never suspend on a copy.
- zortos293#264 and the read downloads: every GetFlushArea path a Switch 2 title takes (read downloads in
flight, early downloads, flushes) forgets the read's traps, so the next GPU write arms them
again; the texture cache's area now does too.
- zortos293#337 and "land read downloads under query results": a fence-flagged report's operation still
lands the read downloads under it first, now from the fence thread, which holds no cache lock
while it runs operations. zortos293#337 also makes such reports land at their fence with Normal
accuracy. The semaphore view values the payload reports the front sends itself without
reading memory. A word it reads from memory once the back ran the release may still lack a
report waiting for its fence: the channel then waits until that report's operation latches it.
- zortos293#488 and "engines: write 3D state registers in one call": the back still puts state writes
outside macros in the method sink and consumes it before macro writes, executable methods and
method runs. The fast path only changes how CallMethod writes a register, so sink_pending
matches the back.
- zortos293#688 and the back macros: native MME no longer reads its parameters again from guest memory.
The back's macro engine runs on the parameters the front fetched, as the front's does.
- zortos293#621 and "release threads waiting for sync operations once the GPU threads stop": the poll
only resets its timer and skips the sleep when no channel is left; NotifyShutdown is unchanged.
- zortos293#769 pins the split GPU threads to their own cores by default (8 physical cores on a 7800X3D):
the threads this branch measured unpinned are pinned now.
- zortos293#818, zortos293#817, zortos293#296 and zortos293#690 change image uploads and the texture cache. None of them uses a
buffer cache buffer on the GPU, so the upload reordering's use marks still cover every buffer
use. zortos293#815, zortos293#781 and zortos293#820 change only the pipeline cache and shaders, zortos293#655 the game patches and
the vsync rate (60 Hz by default), zortos293#689 decoder frames.
Tested:
- Compile checks of 23 files: the conflicted ones, the auto-merged ones both sides changed and
users of the changed headers, without RTTI. The tests that include the changed headers
compile (buffer_cache_ports, command_snapshot_suspensions, command_writer,
maxwell_fast_method, gpu_written_pages).
- clang strict warnings (shadowing, narrowing, sign, switch, reorder) on the lines changed
against bf48fe9 and against f9f3bc6: none.
- The harnesses, rebuilt against this tree (their settings objects too, since zortos293#655, zortos293#769 and
zortos293#816 add settings):
- split: 20 of 20 runs, and 10 of 10 pinned to one CPU;
- QMD view, with EDEN_NX2_DRAIN_CHECK=1 EDEN_NX2_ACQUIRE_STATS=1: no failures, every drain
check released otherwise 0, read otherwise 0, differing 0;
- read downloads (with buffer_cache_ports' download, read and GPU write cases): 14,311
checks, no failures;
- DMA writes: no failures;
- list writers: entry (EDEN_NX2_DRAIN_CHECK=1 EDEN_NX2_ENTRY_CHECK=1) 17 checks, tagged
212,633, front 158, vk 288 (lavapipe with synchronization validation: nothing outside the
controls, each control reports its hazard), no failures. The macro harness needs
nx2_list_dump.h, which neither this tree nor the PR head has, and was not run;
- upload reordering: hreorder and hshutdown, no failures;
- gpu_hbatch (lavapipe with synchronization validation): nothing outside the controls, each
control reports its hazard, no failures.
The output of every harness that ran matches its run on the PR head.

Adapted: nx2 has no live switch method to sit beside, so only speed_limit is added, and
docs/nx2/debug-mcp.md documents it.
* video_core: read EDEN_NX2_SKIP_SAME and EDEN_NX2_PERF_VERIFY once per Maxwell3D
From zortos293#488 (9010ecd, mstampfli), second half: SkipSameValueWrites()
and Nx2Perf::Verify() run for every 3D method on the back and kept their value in a
function-local static, so each call checked its initialization guard (0.9% and 0.3%
of the back thread in their profile).
Adapted: the PR reads both into namespace-scope statics at static initialization,
which runs before main() loads nx2_switches.txt (LoadNx2Switches), so a switch file
setting either would be missed. Here Maxwell3D reads them in its constructor into
members. Other Nx2Perf::Verify() callers are unchanged.
Not taken from zortos293#488: its same-value drop of vertex_buffer.first/count (already done
by our port of zortos293#178, bd27dc7) and of index_buffer.first, which the front sends on
purpose (it sets Dirty::IndexBuffer; our EDEN_NX2_EXP2 is the guarded version).

(cherry picked from commit 4f9a471)
Adapted to zortos293#714: the two switches are const members with default initializers, read when the
engine is made like trace_first_method_writes, instead of assignments in the constructor. nx2
has no FrontDmaReadEarly, so that hunk is dropped.

(cherry picked from commit d603d98)
Adapted: unconditional. The fork's EDEN_NX2_EXP21 switch (default on) is dropped, since nx2
doesn't merge experiment switches.
The page filter test imported from the fork (c63b0b1) expects the first version of zortos293#250,
where a mark past the 36-bit space set an overflow flag that made every query answer yes.
nx2 has zortos293#250's later commit 65e3a09, which leaves such ranges untracked so images
without CPU backing don't switch the filter off. Check that behaviour instead.
* fence_manager: no branch hint on the fence decision profile check
docs/Coding.md leaves branch likelihood to PGO.

Upstream's final versions replace the earlier copies tuned4 carried: zortos293#816 (store extent; the
Cap64K mark mode goes), zortos293#815 and zortos293#591 (pipeline cache: a key's first record is built, exact
duplicates and incomplete records are removed from the file, which replaces round 16's
newest-record retry and failed-record set), zortos293#817 and zortos293#818 (join copies that write a whole
image; StalePages), zortos293#778 (Fritchii v4 imports: storage-pointer texture handles and idle staging
buffers without a switch, per-engine switch reads), zortos293#268 (collect from 5/8 of the VRAM budget),
zortos293#621, zortos293#687, zortos293#488. Kept from tuned4: the record conversions for other drivers and dynamic state
forms, the vertex attribute keys (zortos293#408), now deduplicated in memory only so the file keeps
every record other builds key apart, EXP8's copy-overwrite skip, banded untiles and no cold
hints, batched collector downloads, the front's write tracking and mixed macro reads, the host
pacer's genlock beside zortos293#655's timer pacing, and the raw Dynamic FPS step, applied now to zortos293#655's
FPS Unlock patch too (it shares the routine's head). Upstream zortos293#841 builds task/mesh records
without VK_EXT_mesh_shader, so their drop goes.

…nstant buffer runs on the front
With the macros on the split front, every 3D register write was its own ring entry and ran on
the back one by one. The front now holds back what it can send later as one entry:
- State register writes (not executable) collect in a delta, one slot per register, sent as
one StateDelta entry before the next other entry. The back applies it with the shadow RAM
and the same-value skip as CallMethod would, raising the dirty flags once.
- Identical instance-loop groups (draw.begin Subsequent .. draw.end with only vertex/index
buffer first/count between) are counted and sent as one DrawBatch: the back runs the first
and adds the repeats to the instance count.
- Constant buffer data writes go in runs of up to 4 words (CbWrite, run through
CallConstBufferWords), bind group writes as CbBind.
- Same-value vertex_buffer.first/count and index_buffer.first writes outside a captured group
are dropped (index_buffer.first only while no inline or small-index draw bound another index
buffer since); this replaces the old loop-write skip, which batches make moot.
Held-back work goes out before any other entry, before the front waits for the back, before a
publish ahead of a front sleep, and when the engine changes. GpuSplit::SelectEngine runs it
first (not only Reserve, as in zortos293#717): another channel's Maxwell3D holding a delta would
otherwise switch the engine under the entry being written.
These were EDEN_NX2_FRONT_STATE, EDEN_NX2_DRAW_BATCH, EDEN_NX2_FRONT_CB_ENCODE,
EDEN_NX2_SKIP_SAME_DRAWREG and EDEN_NX2_DELTA_CHAIN (the back runs the entry after a delta at
once), default on; the switches are gone. zortos293#641's wave notes (Ryzen 7 3700X + RTX 3080, Kokiri
Forest): structural changes incl. front-owned registers and draw batches took build-88 from ~31
to 32-33 fps; no per-switch number.
zortos293#488 (in nx2) kept same-value draw-register writes while state writes waited in the back's method
sink, so a deferred draw a changed state write ends issues before the next engine's work. Here
the front sends no state write to the sink: they go as a delta that is applied (deferred draw
first) before any later entry, an engine switch included, so zortos293#488's sink tracking
(FrontSkipsLoopWrite, sink_pending) goes with the old send path.

Cherry-picked from Lichii's 5ba52f7720 (zortos293/Lichii#488), authorship kept.
This is a latent ordering bug we ship, not a performance change: our
FrontSkipsLoopWrite had the predicate without the sink term, our Front() had no
staleness check and GpuSplit had no start counter. DrainSite::FrontStart the
restart path needs was already here.
Two tests, each confirmed to fail with its half of the fix removed:
- the loop write is sent while the sink holds a state write, and dropped again
once an executable method or a multi-method run has consumed it (the ring's
write position is the observable; the baseline drop is a REQUIRE, so the test
cannot pass by skipping nothing);
- a front copied before a restart does not drop a write the back needs, by
moving the engine's state while the split is stopped and sending the front's
stale value.
GpuSplitTestAccess::Start now increments starts as MaybeStart does. 918 test
cases pass.
